It has been confirmed that "rare" will be more desirable in the end game in comparison to "unique". I have came up with a great idea to add more depth to end game itemization.
Since "rares" will be regular items attributed with prefixes and suffixes, why not make a system where certain prefixes and suffixes worn together give you some "bonus", some sort of synergy effect.
These system I am proposing is for items are not to be used as "set" items! This system is for rares is for RARES only, and intended to be much more flexible, rewarding, and most of all, difficult to obtain than set items.
These effects and synergies will have to be discovered through "trial and error" and no one is 100% sure if there is another "bonus" or synergy out there that is better than their current set up.
So for example You have the following rare items: Bleeding Gauntlets of the Wolf, Wizards boots of the Wolf, Heroes Breast plate of the Wolf...
With all these 3 items "of the wolf" equipped you get a bonus called "pack master" which may give you +15vit, +15 stam, etc, etc,
And perhaps there is an even better bonus if you have 5 items "of the wolf"
This is just one of many ways this system can add more depth, complexity, and repeatability to Diablo 3.
Then to make it even more complex, players may see to have both the prefixes and suffixes the same for all items thus giving synergies from both prefixes and suffixes.
IE: Heroes Breast plate of the wolf, heroes gauntlet of the wolf, heroes belt of the wolf.
This synergy will give bonus from having 3 "Hero" prefix along with the "wolf" suffix.
giving you the +15vit, +15 stam, etc, etc, of the wolf, in addition to a "Heroes" bonus
Another way this synergy can be used is if a number of different prefixes and suffixes are combined to create a bonus
IE: Heavenly helm of the Hawk, Slashers gauntlet of the snake, Rangers bow of the monkey, thieves boots of the bear, arcanists belt of the boar.
Since the player uses 5 items all containing animals, the bonus could grant "of the beast" synergy where it would add certain stats
Now obviously this could add significant depth to the game!
I could think of tons of cool synergies from different prefixes and suffixes.
Maybe there could be a set where if you combine the prefix or suffix or all the names of the 5 brothers on Mt. Areat. When you get 3/5 of their names you get a small bonus, and when you collect all of them you get an awesome bonus. Or perhaps you collect all your items with only the name of a specific brother, and you get an awesome bonus for a certain barbarian build that coincides with the name of that specific brother.
Technically there would be a most desirable combination of prefixes and suffixes for ever class according to play style and build, and yes it would be theoretically possible to obtain every piece of gear with the same prefix and suffix, but to do so would require a TREMENDOUS amount of time and effort. Thus adding to re playability and the never ending quest for most players to get the "best gear"
what do you guys think?
Also if any one thinks this is a good idea, and has access to the official diablo3.com forums, please just copy and paste this post on to the official forums with a link back to this page. I would do it my self, but I can't.
Hmm, this idea is actually quite good. Adding even more incentive to hunting for rares is great!
I like how you made them be hidden bonuses as to clearly differentiate rares from set items (there will be no hint in the description giving away set bonuses).
I am glad somebody likes this idea, I have had it for a while and wanted to post it on to the official d3 website but I don't have the key any more or the CD box...
It would kind of be like runes were in diablo 2 in a sense. I like the idea of not knowing if there is something better out there, to me, this kind of feeling is very "diablo". Always hunting and exploring for something better.
If some one has a official bnet account and can post on the official diablo 3 forums, PLEASE do so, and refrence this page.
I like the idea because it's fairly conventional and straight forward. Why wouldn't you get some kind of bonus for having multiple "of the wolf" items? It would definitely increase the need for trading with other players and in-turn increase demand for online play.
It'd be nice because unlike sets this would not be limited to predetermined types of items. For instance, Bul Kathos set bonuses only work when u have the Bul Kathos Swords and ring....This way the Pre/Suffixes could be on any kind of item, not limited to say two specific swords and a ring. Also, with rares there's no telling what attributes your items would have originally so there would be a lot of variety in what gear people are gonna use. Could be good.

"Losers always whine about their best, winners go home and Fvck the prom queen."
Sry.. but i didn't like :/
I hate any set-like feature on items because it decrease item customisation. By giving a synergy between 2 sufix/prefix you're making unviable any choice that don't have those synergies, decreasing the number of choices.
I only support very small sets (2~3 items) and only if those sets are individually far weaker then unic/rares.
This will be hard since the possible combinations will spread over the internet quickly.
The point is not to keep them hidden forever. It is like runes in D2, it would be impossible to mouse over a rune and look at all of the rune words that could be made with this rune, because it would just take up too much space due to all of the possible combinations. So this is one reason why potential matching items would not be listed in game.
Another reason why it is not listed is due to the fact, that there is a possibility of discovering a new one. Though eventually it is possible to have discovered 100% of the combinations, it would be unlikely as long as there are outlier sets that do not follow a particular pattern. Sure there will be patterns with the sets, like 3 or 5 or 7 of the same pre/suffix, 3 similar suffixes(animals, brothers, and such), and other combination that follow logic. But there could be combination that rare "easter egg" combinations, perhaps these combinationa are based off of stuff in real life(pop culture, movies, other games), or from obscure lore in other blizzard games like dare I say Wow or Starcraft.
It could be possible that all the "easter egg" combinations are never found. And when they are all "found" new ones could be made, thus creating new fervor to play the game adding to the replayability. And I am not only suggesting these combinations as the only possible types of combinations, I am only adding these suggestions to a large pool of potential possible combination types.
And with the lore related easter egg combinations, it would be a great adventure for a player to find a scroll on a monster that was lore, or pick some fine details in a conversation with an NPC. But it contains VERY VERY subtle clues and hints about a combination, that may or may not be an actual combination. Like some sort of like a riddle. It would be very rewarding players that are deeply involved with lore especially when they discover that their 10 week hunt, speaking with differnt NPCS, peicing togehter differnt peices of the puzzle, determining what is important information and what is irrelevant, and finally collecting all of the needed items(seemingly unrelated) and obscure unlock some awesome crazy synergy. Let me tell you, if I worked for 10 weeks to discover some awesome new synergy, the last thing I would do is post it on the internet so any noob can get what I worked 10 weeks to get.
I think this system is perfect, because it is suitable for the casual player just collecting some items of the same stuff, the hard core player getting all of his items with the same prefix and suffix, and also rewards the UBER UBER hard core lore fanatic that can solve clues based on subtle hints and riddles.
(If you discovered this awesome crazy synergy all by your self, through your hard work and research would you be willing to post it on the internet and share it with the whole world?)
Yes, but you will not be using completely random combinations in the end. Rares that give health, armor and damage can together give bonuses suitable for a Barbarian. The thing that makes it different from sets is that you can replace one health item with a armor item and still get bonuses because they follow the same theme or something.
But they are not sets. The only similarity to sets is that serveral items grants combined bonuses. You have much more freedom and it is much more random with a system like this.
Yes, we have more freedom compered to sets. But less freedom compered to "unsynergic" rares.
No you have the same freedom.
It is just a "bonus", no one is putting a gun to your head and forcing you to use all rares of a specific type.
Rares will still be good even if you don't have synergies...
People will try to use the best gear possible and freedom of choice is when you have a wide choices of possible best gear. This synergies will make "unsynergic" rares worse cause they lack the bonus cutting down the number of possible best gears.
It is not like we are going to have big freedom in the end anyway. There will be a best gear setup that everyone is going to use (if they can get it).
I'm 100% sure they are not aiming that when developing the game.
Many games have decent-great itemization. Just because Diablo 1 and 2 were terrible in this aspect doesn't mean the third one have to be.

But WoW is also absolutely horrible in that aspect too, so we can't say Blizzard knows how to do this properly

And besides, its far from an easy task.
Agreed with the WoW's coment (even though items naturally plays a smaller role in wow) and yeh, blizz don't know how to do it properly.
And I kno it's not a "easy task", but i'm hoping they do it properly since items are 50% of what diablo is.
