I find it hilarious how many people are upset by their knowledge gaps which they fill with assumptions. I see so many arguments which are based on principles and the way things worked in D2 when we have no idea how most mechanics will work in D3.
It is not like Blizzard is saying: "Hey guys (and girls), every aspect of the game (D3) that we haven't stated will be different from D2 will be exactly like it was in D2."
We truly lack the context of the completed project that is D3 to criticize the scraps of information we receive from the developers. (I may assume that we know less than we do since I'm not the most up to date on D3 news.)
There are so many things which we do not know about D3:
We don't even know to what--characters or accounts--items will bind when equipped. We have almost no information on runes as a gameplay mechanic or an item in the economy.
We don't know how difficult it will be to obtain lvl 85+ items and whether they will drop randomly or only by certain events/chests/bosses. We don't know how good they will be: Will there be one 1h melee sword >lvl 85 or will there be a dozen? We don't know what we will be able to do with bound items--many individuals seem to assume that our only recourse will be to sell to vendor and maybe, if we're lucky, give to other characters on account? We do not know if there will be another option for example: (the use of the following word may upset you) "disenchanting" bound items to obtain high level runes or other item parts (which we don't know about) or transmuting them into something else. Can anyone say that he or she knows whether or not the Horadric Cube will appear in D3 and if so what all of the recipes are?
We do not know whether items (especially uniques or other high-level items) will have set stats or not. I mean the wonderful item stats which when looked up on arreat summit would be listed with the suffix " (varies)." I would personally like to seen these variable stats removed for the highest level items because I feel that high level unique items whose stats vary just results in players finding "crappy" versions of some of the best items in the game. I feel that if I obtain a "best helm in the game for my monk's build super unique item" and I know that there is no chance of finding a better one since each has non-variable stats, I would feel much more well at ease equipping and binding it to my character. I didn't mind how most (all?) named items in WoW had set stats so that a character would only have to find an items once to get the best of that item (and wouldn't then flood the market with poorer quality versions of the same item which they found while on their quest for a "perfect" one).
A few more notable unknowns which come to mind:
We don't know how hardcore will work. I know I've probably said it before, but we do not know what kind of ridiculous challenges will confront characters trying to find the best possible items AND whether or not MF will have any effect on one's chances of doing so. We don't know how towns (safe zones), dungeons, "waypoints," inventory, trading will work. We haven't heard anything about an auction house. I think it would be great if there were a "classified" mechanic where players could designate an item of theirs as "for trade/sale" and state what they would be willing to trade for it. We don't really know how B.net 2.0 will work or how match-making and -joining will work. Will there be realms/servers/groups of players who can only interact with each other? Will there be a ladder? Will there be a level cap? How long will the game take to "complete?" Will players be able to attack other players who have no interest in fighting with them?
All of these things (and many more) affect how D3 will be played. I should state that when I say "we don't know," I really mean that I have not found information from Blizzard saying otherwise. However, I don't think we can assume that anything is set in stone because the damn game is years from release and as such anything can change between now and then (except maybe the name...). I guess that my argument is simply that we can't really say that BoE is good or bad for D3 since no human has played the completed game and we really don't know how the economy will work since it doesn't exist yet!
I hope that Blizzard has learned a good bit about video game economies from WoW and D2 and all of the patches they have applied to each. It is my hope that since Diablo 3 is it's own game and therefore a blank tableau, they can make something unique which works closer to the way that they want it to, now. I doubt that they will, but it certainly would be nice if they put a lot of effort into forming a workable D3 economy now while the game is in development...
I suppose most of this can be summarized (If you have made it this far, I congratulate you) as follows:
I hope and am quite certain that: Diablo 3 will not be a patch for Diablo 2; when Diablo 3 is released they will work quite differently while still feeling like they belong to the same franchise; and the problems or points of contention with Diablo 3 are quite difficult to see at present.
And for the only part of this post which is on topic: I think that BoE for the very highest quality items is not in-and-of-itself such a great evil that we can hate it before we see how it works in the context of the game.

BOE is not bad what are you people saying?.... BoE just simply means don't equip the damn thing and you can trade it. the only way its bad is if you xfer or want to trade for diff char equips. And that really isnt a big problem if you can get another item 1 level lower and sell it for around the same priice or somethin. BoE isnot bad at all i find it rather good. Gives you a tough decision to make makes better ROLEPLAYING in the RPG

Can someone please tell me one good thing about BoE or BoP and also explain to me why a huge company like Blizzard can't regulate a game company without such artificial limitations while CCP could?
I apologize if this was stated already (I didn't read through the entire thread) but Blizzard did state when they first announced the game that there would be no BoE or BoP. The only type of BoE items would be Quest like items. Essentially, it'll be very similar to D2.

nope. They stated they're going to make level 85+ items boe. Only items in game that will be bop are quest items, which is fine.

Boe is going to help control the market in d3, such as trading, gold making, and character progression. With it, you now have to make a choice, instead of just being able to to everything with the gear you found. Now, you can either equip on the character that found it, save it for another toon, trade it for something else, or sell for gold. This will in turn, increase item value through selling it, plus lower the amount of items that are for sale or trade, which is good. This will cause players to work more towards gear progression through the game instead of just getting all the top items for their level because some other guy doesn't use them anymore.
Sorry I only read the first few pages of this thread but....
Have you guys thought that BOE will make them MORE expensive because now they have to farm way harder for the items they want. This of course under consideration that the seller don't want to use the godly item.
if you read the post i made directly above yours, yes it will....
And thats a good thing. You actually have to work for getting good gear now, either by finding it yourself, or spending a good deal of money on it. This will prevent ppl from always having top notch gear at every level unless they earned it or spent the chunk of change on it.
The more and more I read about the implications of the proposed 85 and up BOE change, the more I like it.
Anything that prolongs the life/raises the value of endgame items drastically is a godsend in terms of replayability/character development. I don't see any reason to really complain about it..

Explain to me how, please. It's BoE. Not BoP.
Not to mention that EVE O has none of this rubbish and the economy there is beyond fine.
I don't see how BoE decreases amounts of items... the items that will be traded often times won't even be compatible to players that got them... most items that will be not sold will be transition items (I can use it but I don't need it anymore and yet I used it before). Which makes no sense.
In that short area, too, 85-100 level items. What's wrong with transitionals there?
BoP helps regulate ITEMS, it also sort of destroys TRADE since you can't really trade anything wortwhile once you pick it up. I would not want to see that. BoE doesn't do much except prevents transitional items from being traded, which is silly.
So essentially there are only two reasons someone would ever have a problem with BOE items.
1) They get a better item to replace their current BOE item. If this occurs, well, you have a better item so don't complain! Also, this won't happen too often since BOE items will all be high level items.
2) They want to trade their l33t gear on one toon to get l33t gear on a different toon. You should have to earn the l33tness of every individual toon you have. If people were able to freely do this, it would mean that by having one set of good equipment, you have a potential set of good equipment for any character.
Also, making items BOE at high levels increases not only the value of the item, but the value of the toon too. You will care more for that toon since you made the trade sacrifice of using BOE items on him/her.

others always find a way to say "that sux, its like wow".. forgeting that wow take a lot of things from diablo
its so hard to have some opinion different from this both?
exactly, blizzard make mistakes like everyone.. so the community can see this errors 'cause we are the ones that played a lot of d2 and d1
but some people just dont want to see and just loves everything
i think about all the changes, and actually i like 90%, but this one sux

i personally don't really care.
i'm too lazy to trade anyway so my gears nearly always end up being sold to NPCs
Wait, what?
"everything great by now at d3" is where you lost me.
It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.

Stay awhile, and listen.
The 85+ BoE system seems fine to me. It'll help control keep the market less saturated with items and keep the costs higher.
Not to mention that EVE O has none of this rubbish and the economy there is beyond fine.

how is picking up a level 85 wizard item as a barb "transitional"
