To stay OT and to slightly insult everyone's intelligence...
Leah's vision in the trailer is rather choppy and shows several different locations...the comet hits old Tristram Cathedral, whereas where we see the guards standing watch appears to be what remains of Mt. Arreat at the Arreat Crater.
To get technical, we don't have any idea where we are when we see the demon horde marching, though I always thought it was them coming forth from the crater.
Just saying...we don't know what is / isn't coming out of the hole the comet creates, whether it's a sign of Heaven or Hell.
Not to be a renamoderator or anything. But if I'm not mistaken there has already been several discussions on the comet. Go dig through our limitless archives.

The comet didin't come from heavens, it come from the skies.
The comet can be anything - some kind of weapon used by Imperius, some kind of vessel of demons comanded by Belial and/or Azmodan, some spell casted by those triune cultists to bring back the prime evils, Lilith returning from her exile in the void (assuming the void is what we can space)...
I'm pretty sure the comet is just a sign of evil to come... perhaps some fallen angels (by fallen I mean defeated). It could even be a way to escape the war that is raging in the high heavens (like escape pods). We don't know what's gonna happen so lets either speculated a weird incoherent plot or just let it be

you seem pretty sure AZMODAN and/or BELIAL are involved...
The teaser trailer is a combination of several cinematics from the game, so the meteor may be connected to the hordes from hell shown later in the trailer or not, they may happen in different times it's not confirmed so let's wait and see.

ya this is being discussed in a lot of threads(some of them arent active anymore though), try using the search feature next time.
Maybe there was still demons within the Cathedral, but it was so dark that they couldn't find their way out, and when the comet came, it brough in the sunlight which allowed the demons to find their way out.
Personally, during the trailer when they showed Hell's Army, I thought it was a flashback to D2 in Harrogath. But I'm probably just an idiot.
nah, it's definetly a PROTOSS starship which motors glitched during an SC2 beta test!
This convinced Blizzard that they may need a different game in case SC2 was not a success (which I hope not) and this is the real reason we have D3 under development now!
ok, I'm a fool!
now back on topic: since heaven & Hell lies in different dimensional plane, the comet/meteor may come from each of them. It may be a spell cast both by one of the demons or the angels.
I think we can just speculate on it with the little we know now.
Don't you guys think it's a bit weird how a comet falls out of the heavens with an army of demons?
Because spinning around like a top lopping the heads off of countless swarms of zombies, launching flames from your hands, being killed and being able to run back and come back to life by picking up your own dead body, passing through a portal that takes you directly to hell where you must single-handedly destroy Diablo, killing a Quill-Rat and summoning it back to life as a human skeleton, putting a yellow gem in a hole in your sword and then seeing a monster randomly get shocked by lightning when you whack it...
Are all everyday, completely normal, plausible things.

Totally.
It obviously is the most powerful spell of the wizard. Dah
