It was insanely fun and cool to collect runes and use them to make a highly useful magic item, unlike crafting which does not have that cool "magical" feel to it and generally makes shit items
It allowed low level chars to find things that were sometimes useful to high level chars
They worked great as a form of currency
If you think Enigma was overpowered, whatever...they don't need Enigma in D3. But I still want to see runewords. This was the coolest thing in D2.
I wasn't the biggest fan of rune words, but as far as what I'm hearing it's sounding like they will implement something for more customizable characters
Im all for runewords in D3. Loved the idea of runes being beneficial to a armor or weapon socket but having them in certain combination for cool unique gear was awesome....they were a little insane in D2 but w/e its not liek they need to be like that in D3 as well
I prefered gems over runes. Not because of their powers but rather because of their simplicity. Why can't they just make a large amount of gems instead and implant a mechanic where you can combine gems to make a certain stat. For exemple, you take a topaz and an emerald to add chance to find better items and frost+electricity resistance/attack. You find like blood diamonds or blue diamonds...etc. I mean, runewords sucked according to me, I wasn't thrilled at all but this system!

I concur sir.
I would like to see uber uniques or even set items with sockets for amulets for a little flexibility in the items we love.
They'll replace runewords with something (they said every mechanic that is removed will be replaced), until we find out what it is I suggest you withdraw this petition.
They basically made most uniques that had previously been amazing useless. And you almost never find HR's on your own, you just trade items for someone who duped and cubed them.
I know duping shouldn't be a problem, but that doesn't mean runewords won't be.

I don't want runewords to be replaced by anything. It is the best feature of Diablo 2 and it should be in D3 as well.
I cannot believe someone actually said replied to this thread saying that runewords were overpowered. We are talking about the MECHANIC of runewords not the actual formulas. It is just as easy to make an overpowered runeword formula as it is to make an overpowered unique item. The only difference is that runewords require acquiring multiple rare items rather than 1 lucky drop, so it makes sense that they should be more powerful.
The only thing that might be changed about runewords to make them better is to make all runeword items automatically soulbound, so that you have to make them yourself.
I have never met a person online who found the runes for there overpowered runeword, every single one of them told me they bought runes online. Seriously.

Yeah I have to say when I went around trading people were showing off their Zod's and there were way too many in circulation for them not to be atleast botted.
How can you know that there wont be something better than runewords? At least wait until you see what they've come up with before passing judgment. I'd like to see a more open ended item enchanting mechanic than runewords, kinda like crafting only not as stupid and with more variables.
I'm thinking if Blizzard want to implement runewords they will. If not, they won't.
I'm sure they are thinking about a lot of things to put in or exclude to balance the game.
I don't think it's anybody's place besides Blizzard to impose certain things.
Same goes with the whole "it's too colorful" debacle.
 wow..... your view on this nearly caused my head to explode...

very very enlightening statement..... >_>

wouldnt have ever thought that without your insightful comment.... <_<
and finally.... you dont think its anyones place to tell blizzard when they are fucking up?! we are the fucking fans, the people who buy the game... we definitely have the right to be telling them what they should and should not do...

Hey I want that nice wand I got in guildwars to be in Diablo 3. I think that wand would fit in Diablo 3 it has nice dmg and good powers.
Oh wait, Guild wars isn't Diablo 3.
Oh wait, Diablo 2 isn't Diablo 3.
See what I mean.
Oh fucking wait, Diablo 3 is a sequel to Diablo 2..... not a completely different game...
anyways runewords dont have to be op, they can obviously be toned down. and i dont know why we are talking about duping as that will be impossible in diablo 3. and if it becomes possible they will patch it immediately.
Runewords is just a term. The term will be changed since the definition of runes changed, but I wouldn't be surprised if something similar under a different name was implemented, along with improved crafting.
I just dont get the hate towards runewords being in D3....were they OP in D2??? YES by a lot....but its not because of anything other then the designers making them that way. Lets also not forget runewords that were ridiclous to make like nigma and last wish were meant to be uber powerful because the runes were so fucking insanely rare to find or ever trade for......duping obviously changed this as even a moron with no people skills or trading skills can get a nigma and any other rune word now.....this is the only reason people hate rune words I think....cuz theres to many of em around that SHOULD be almost impossible to make......
If they just make a runeword system more balanced and easy to aquire then whats the big deal?
anyone think that runes should be called their original names, instead of 'rune of power' for example.... so lame imo... it should be called something like zod, and then when moused over should show what it does. the description shouldnt be in the name
yes it does but then why not name swords as follows:
grief pb now = best sword (or sword of fast attack and lots of damage)
botd = second best sword (sword of damage)
last wish now = third best sword (sword of crushing blow and life tap)
like it just takes all the magic out of the game. when we find ancient symbols or drawings do we name them based on exactly how we see them. If we found the mona lisa or however u spell it 100 years from now (say it was lost and no one knew what it was) would we then call it 'drawing of ugly woman' ?
keeping names like zod, jah, lem etc keep the unknown and mysteries in the game. We will always be wondering, perhaps there is some ancient people who made these runes damn im so glad i get to use what they did, this is so sweet. escpecially cuz its so rare! iv got one and none of my friends have one

Yes I see what you mean but its something from a past diablo game that was a great idea....why not bring it back in some form that would work for D3?
Fuck you, I'm a dragon.
