Seems to be only major type of weapon that Diablo has left out. Would be nice to have a long range weapon that differs from the bow&arrow stereotype, imo. Can look awesome as well (a long tongue of flame/ice/lightning reaching out to strike mobs can potentially look much more impressive than melee weapon effects)
Prob need a new class for this tho, demon hunter? ('demon tamer' wud b meh...and 'catman' jus wont cut it...XD)

Diablo has left out Katana, and any slight variation thereof. Ninja-to, Yamato, Yamarra, Wakizashi and Sakabato or reverse blade sword, i.e the cutting edge is on the inwardly curving side of the katana, which makes it almost impossible to kill anything with, without reversing the sword.
As for whips, several demons had whips in LOD, so I do not see why a human could not. However that being said, them seem out of place. I have these visions of Castlevania 64 (err I forget which one, the one where the male protagonist has a whip) and the Adventures of Conan the Barbarian show where one of the main characters has a whip.
I do not think you would need a new class to implement such a weapon, since in general the classes in Diablo can use any weapon they choose.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.

The reason these weapons were left out is because they do not suit the world of Diablo. They are the sort of weapons used by swift characters. The whips on the other hand seem to suit the game more because of the dominating demons.
However that's not to say that those types of swords could not be implemented. It'd be pretty cool if they did implement them with a new character like that guy that was blind in the tekken series, lol, he was cool... at least I think it was the tekken series.

definitely got to have some whips in there somewhere, but no specifc class, thats just taking it too far.
Why not? Javelins were introduced thru amazon and prety much only class that can use them properly, and no one complained - same with assassin claws. Just bit difficult to imagine barb whirling with a whip in hand, etc. A whip-class (haha Dominatress! XD Beast Master mite also do) Can really have some cool whip-specific skills
I envision a melee tree: grabbing nearest mob and slamming it (imagine an visual effect like DMC4 Nero's devil bringer (its a glowing blue extension, claw-shape at end) , AOE by spinning whip into a barrier effect. Ranged tree: multi-pierce, impaling, lashing out to produce elemental projectile attack~endless possibilities and more fun imo den da old bow&arrows

Having whips would be really cool but the only problem I would have is that it could lead to being "cheap" in some situations, since it could be a really strong melee attack from far away. BUt besides that, it sounds awesome.

I like the idea of whips being added but I wouldn't want them to be class specific. Even if only one class has skills specifically for a weapon type, I think all weapons should be usable by all characters. The fact that only assassins could use katars, etc. always bugged me in LoD, as did all the other class specific equipment. Even if something is more likely to have skills for 1 class, I'd like to be able to use it on anyone.
Whips lashes are not "strong" attacks. The main purpose of a whip is to inflict nonlethal pain. I would like to see them in game though, probably class specific, an utility-weapon boostable with certains skills or special attacks.
They have accuracy so they have critical strike right there. And plus, it would make sense to add poison to them since they are vines.

I like whips...they should be multi-tailed for the purpose of diablo I think. Or at least an "magical" ability to divide the whip so it acts like a multi-tailed whip. Gives you some aoe damage capabilities. I also think whips should have high chance of bleeding wounds. This should also be a medium range obviously, something that was missing in D2. And they might consider jazzing the whip up with a small spiked ball at the end or thorns all along it (or both).
*ABILITY IDEAS
Whip Crack: Creates a loud crack knocking back and stunning opponents in a radius around the end of the whip.
So you could open up like a little void in the creatures. And you could place the center of the radius anywhere between you and the maximum range of your whip.
Wrangle (donno about this one): Pull opponents together lumping them and holding them in place for a couple seconds.
Would be good for setting up for aoe bombardment on opponents.

Nice 2 c I'm not alone on da whips front~petition!! XD awesome ideas coming in, hope this keeps up!
Multi-tailed whip sounds like a cool skill, like zon's multi-shot! The wrangle idea of pulling in mobs is sweet as well - neva seen this type of atk in diablo and can really put some tactics&teamwork in play (gathering whole bunch of escaping Fallens togethr; pull mobs in then gound slam/whirl). Diff whip styles would look stunning on screen coz of the length. Seeing a long chain of thorns/spiked balls/claws lashing out&dealing pain sounds like what i'd like!
Can even use it to entangle mobs (life leech by squeezin dem dry), trip-up mobs for an AOE speed debuff, grapple hook onto mobs one after another for closing distance&quick movement onscreen...and it goes on! sigh...wish we will actually see this!!

Wow, this is a sweet idea!!! It is so good that it could actually be implemented.
And yes you can kill a demon with a whip, if it has steel spikes or thorns, or if it is magically enchanted. Seriously though, how is an arrow supposed to kill Diablo?!?!?
I also really like the idea of all whips having a really high percentage of Open Wounds.
The whip would need to be a support weapon. I like the idea of knockback. You aren't going to kill anything with a whip (as someone already said). Unless you whip it in it's eye and it can't see anymore and falls down... And what happens when they get up close with you? Wrap them up in it?
I could kill something with a lamp shade too - especially if I put spikes on it! The knife/sword for the handle of the whip is kind of interesting - having weapons like that would definitely add in some variety. I'm all for new weapons - I'd try out a whip but dunno how long I'd use it for tho.
Don't you mean Dominatrix. And I was surprised it took that long for someone to mention that.

And yes it does. because it's an equation. He is talking about alchemy or chemistry, not you doing stuff in real life. You took it out of context.
2NaN03 + MgCl2 = 2NaCl + Mg(n03)2
I lost my sodium Nitrate, but gained Sodium Chloride (Salt), and in equal proportion.

It's no less possible than killing a thick skinned demon in heavy metal armor with a dagger.
