Blizzard's style is making things stick out so your eyes spot them quicker and react faster.
Really? *looks at Diablo II*
That's Blizzard's style? I also don't understand why does it have to treat its players like idiots who don't notice anything on their own... everyone played SC, DI, WCI, and had no issues noticing things without strange unrealistic techniques... so now what happened? The Dark Mark of 3D?
Hope you're being sarcastic.
edit: Oversized shoulders originally came from D2, WoW imported them from there. And really I couldn't care less about the statue change in your .gif, Diablo gameplay is fast enough to not really give a shit about stuff like that and it's one (1) indoor level. If they should you a single part of Hallf of the Dead from A2 you would have cried that it looks like Indiana Jones.
He said first and foremost they make games that are fun to play. - What matters is, does it make the gameplay better? That always wins.
He also said they they are not going for photorealism (which they never fucking did anyway since D1) but instead encourage their artists to make each game unique - which is why D1 looks a bit like D2 but they are really just as different as Warcraft and Starcraft.
- "One philosophy is that our artists feel like if they're just using photorealism, not creating a unique look for the game, not stylizing so that it's uniquely Blizzard, then they're not doing their jobs."
Well, I agree with making the game unique, but have you seen the comparisons of the female barbarian from Diablo 3 and WOW? I just thought it was a placeholder.
The preliminary art we've seen so far, Wilson said, is from early on in the game. "We want to generate the feeling of everything getting worse... it's part of our narrative. It makes the more gloomy part of the game a place where the stakes get higher." "If you start out at the apocalypse, and then move to more apocalypse, it's not going to have much of an impression on players."
Thank you Blizzard!!!!!!!! And thank you Grimhound!!!!!!!

great, that article made me depressed(not really).
those green and blue hues are so stupid i thought it was so form of joke that wouldnt be present in the final product, but it look like they think its an awesome style to go for a SERIOUS GAME
god damnit
It's not oversized in a way that it's not realist, It's not blocking his vision, but protecting more his arm. I wouldn't say it's 2x the size of his head, but more 1.3 1.4x bigger.

Where is my signature image?
Its gone because I deleted everything off the url. I'm over it, Blizzard has stated its stance, and while I don't agree with it, it is after all up to them. They had a great style and atmosphere in the previous games, and I don't see the logic in getting rid of it. While some of the things they have said are total crap (like the previous style "not working" in 3d, when really its just a personal preference of theirs to go for this "epic" look with immense unrealistically shaped and lit dungeons) I can also see why they made some of the choices they did. The petition has voiced the opinions of many, but in the end they are convinced the Warcraft style is better than the Diablo one and there really is no way to change that. I hope the game turns out well and at least some changes are made, mainly the armor, since that stupidly shaped stuff is pretty much the only thing that would actually put me off playing. I am also tired of the constant arguments and such, and those signatures are only fueling the fire now. They served their purpose to get people to sign, and no doubt they helped, but I'd say its time to move on!
Anyhow, I may be back after release, besides its probably better to try and move on and forget about D3 and hopefully be pleasantly surprised come release rather than hang around here spoiling parts of the game and being disappointed.

I'm glad that you posted that part.
We can't really base the game on just what we see. It could look a whole lot worse.
I think despite how we all feel on how it looks hopefully the gameplay will make up for it in the end.

“I don’t know that we can convince people who don’t like the art direction that they’re ever going to like it,” he said. “In terms of tone, they will find the game as dark as any of the previous ones and in some ways darker. And I think that’s probably, hopefully, enough to satisfy them. I think the vast majority of our fans like the new art style and when they play it and they actually see the influence it has on gameplay, I think a lot of people who don’t like it will turn around. Not all of them, and that’s fine. We know that we can’t satisfy everybody.” - Jay Wilson(aka Ron Pardo's Fluffer)
Having some blue/green lighted dungeons are fine. But every dungeon being blue/green lighted is not. Similarly, some dark lighted dungeons are fine, but all dungeons being dark lighted is not.
If you people actually played D2 you would recall that there were a large VARIETY of colors and themes.
The point that Wilson was making was that variety is good. That's what they are aiming for. To have a game that looks completely washed out and monotonous everywhere is not interesting, and certainly not what D2 was about.
The colors are fine. D2 had a lot of colors. What's important is not the colors, but rather the variety of different environments/colors/themes.
All or nothing mann. Besides, its like asking us to change our view on the diablo coloring. Its tradition. If in a larger perspective, it can be said its like making us change our view on the diablo series.
Despite what you may think about Ron Pardo, he brought up a good point in one of his interviews. Something along the lines of he wouldn't play D3 online first because of the people that may have been up all night and beat it ruining the story for everyone else.
I was on the fence about whether to just start online or beat single player first, and now I have my answer, because he is right. People will be doing that.
It's not wanting to start out in an apocalypse, it's a desire to use realistic colours in realistic situations. Blue and green ambient lights are not ever present in dungeons, and are not spooky at all. Blue shadowing is also a horrible idea, as shadows are black.
This article doesn't really show us too much into why they are making those decisions, although I already knew the game would get more hell-ish as it went.
Well the most I can comment on is the shadows; from an artistic standpoint I paint shadows a very dark blue not black. Now I'm not positive that that is a hard and fast rule but that's what I was taught. Well I would imagine blue green ambient light being present in areas with water or possibly artificial light reflecting and rareafacting. Oh and shadows are not pure black and if you are thinking that way that would actually make it look MORE cartoonish having hard lines and one dimensional shadows. Sorry seems to me you don't have a clear grasp on lighting and for that matter how light/shadow works from an artistic standpoint.

This... is logical, common sense... and is what most of these forum jockeys are lacking.
