I know this has been talked about a bit, but I honestly do not understand how people are saying that D3 looks like titan Quest. The thing that separates the diablo series from almost every other game that tries to be it (baldurs gate, titan quest, so on), is the fact that it not only has a nice deep look to it with very appealing art, but the fact that it just plays and feels responsive and high quality. I played baldurs gate, and i just watched titans quest videos. Both of those games are OK (IMO), but i cant even enjoy them after being spoiled with the quality of diablo :).
All that being said, Is anyone else shocked at the ratings that diablo 2 got on ign and gamespot? I think it was one of the biggest disgraces ever lol...i am willing to bet though that D3 will rise above and AT LEAST achieve high 8's, but most likely 9 or above.
I don't know about titan quest, but Baldurs Gate isn't much like diablo One bad thing about BG is that once you have played it trough, there isn't much to see. You know where you get the best equipment and they are always there, the areas are always the same.. Perhaps you can try some different main character or fix your own group in multiplayer. Thats about it:) for me at least.
Just seeing 20 mins of D3 really stunned me, felt like I hadn't seen anything like that before

WHAT?! HUH?!
Since when did Baldur's Gate try to be diablo? It's nothing like it.
Totally different mechanics (DnD rules), no randomization of items (which is a huge part of Diablo), little to no randomization of monsters (you know exactly what monster is around every corner in BG) fully interactive and controllable NPCs, TCP/IP multiplayer only, custom made voice sets and portraits, totally different inventory, multiple races, sub classes. That is nothing like Diablo.
Only thing similar is a few spells, base classes and the view is sort of the same, BG is somewhat isometric.
Titan Quest literally borrowed from Diablo (and God of War), you do not get a bigger resemblance to something than by coping it.
Diablo 3 is heavily influenced by God of War and World of Warcraft.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
I played Titan quest twice (I went on the game twice). And I played for a total bout 3 hours. Only killed cyclops so far. Can't say I don't like it, but can't say i hate it. The only Hack N Slash that kept me going for hours is diablo. The rest just don't work out.
The one reason why there are rarely any popular Hack N Slash games is because other RPG games domiante it much easier. Since in other RPG games, you aren't killing all the time. You can take in game breaks like fishing, cooking etc. Even the most known RPG games after Diablo does not show up in any game awards or recieve as much attention as Diablo.
So IMO the Diablo III we're looking at right now isn't even remotely close to titan quest in terms of Graphics and style of play. I'd say Titan quest was influenced by D2 instead.
Otherwise yeah, I would have to agree with you. Diablo set the bar for the genre. Thus any game that comes out in that genre will be compared to it, even if the develops were not trying to copy it or emulate it.
Bioware have worked with Wizards of the Coast (who own the IP for Dungeons and Dragons for years), the simply wanted to make another game based in the Forgotten Realms setting of DnD. Baldur's Gate was the result.

Man all the diablo games both 1 and 2 were great games and everyone agreed on that so it goes without saying that blizz will not disapoint and will make D3 a great game aswell but the thing is is that although there have been games like TQ and Baldurs gate and a hole host of other rpgs relesed no one has forgoten about diablo 1& 2 so i think that when D3 comes out people have been waiting so long and have tried to play other rpgs other than the diablo series that when it releases people are gonna be completely blown away.
Baldur's Gate is wayyyy far away from Diablo. And it was fantastic
THe only real variation was with your party characters and how they interacted with each other. There were some subplots you would, or would not get, depending on your party. Some of the stuff changed depending on your rep as well.

Edit: That said, I do think the lush, hand-painted environments in BG resemble D3's outdoor world.

It's similar but not the same.
I love the scenery and backgrounds of the BG series. It moves from dark gothic temples to dark forests, to creepy tombs to vibrantly coloured cities almost as easily as the Diablo series does. A very good series in my book. But obviously not the reason I am here.

Baldur's gate was indeed a very good game when I read a few user and gamer reviews. I myself haven't tried it before, but when I asked my trusted gaming shopkeeper whether it was fun or not. He told me it was just "alright". So any Hack N Slash that is just alright would hardly be fun for me.
But I haven't tried it yet, so I have no right to judge.
Erh... Baldur's Gate is no hack n' slash. It's an RPG. It's not a clickfest, if you want to get killed immediately you probably never pause. You can only MAYBE play it like a party-based hack n' slash if the difficulty is the easiest available.

Need something to do while I wait for D3.
