Dungeon Seige allowed you the option of buying a mule to hold goodies. I never used it though, since it was a choice between the mule or more party members. They also had the tetris inventory with the autosort button.

Hmm. No way in hell I'm posting mine :D

Just a note, there was a big stink when WoW first opened. Several pvp guilds in beta and from UO made public what server they were going to go to. So, someone got there first and took all their names. I know some people who had the same thing happen by a person that disliked them in DAoC. One name, maybe, but the whole list? That's a griefer.

    Very nice links though :)

Baldur's Gate is wayyyy far away from Diablo. And it was fantastic :D
THe only real variation was with your party characters and how they interacted with each other. There were some subplots you would, or would not get, depending on your party. Some of the stuff changed depending on your rep as well.
    /played a thief
    /stole everything
    /stupid pickpocket fails

Edit: That said, I do think the lush, hand-painted environments in BG resemble D3's outdoor world.

No, I am not spam o.O

It was just something I remembered when I read that the pc gamer mag was going to touch on the petition. It made me think, hmm. You know, we kinda asked Blizz to do this once before in another game and wonder if the brighter *night* is something of an art style in itself. I don't mind the colors at all, and I like seeing the dungeon as I go through it. (It reminds me more of the lush hand painted BG series than anything else.) But, I did find the light radius and the dark caves kinda cool too. So, I hope there are dark caves. But, when I think about D1 and 2, there were really only a few areas truly black as pitch. Viva Variety? I think IF they just answer about Light Radius then we'll have a good idea.

I am also kinda curious if this came up in any of their other games. War3 had a night cycle after all. Anyone test that and recall if they tweaked the darkness any?

I can atest in WoW at least, they changed things in Alpha like mad. For instance, in one push, no talent trees. You had skill points when you leveled one push, grinded them in the next. One push you could get every tradeskill, next only 3. Then you could buy stats with them etc. Took them awhile to come up with the trees. At the time, people pegged it as Diabloish :D

IF I recall correctly (hey, it's been awhile) they did not make night darker because in WoW, the day/night cycle is 24 hours (another big debate at the time). In other games where you get a pitch black night, its only a few hours. So, if it had been pitch black, people in Australia would always play in that. Had they shortened the game clock, they probably would have made night darker.

It's not a day until an art thread gets posted :P
    So here 'tis mine.

What do people know of that has been changed due to customer input, or not changed? Out of curiosity, and with links. I've read a lot about Starcraft color changes for instance.

I was lucky enough to be in the F&F WoW Alpha starting during the 3rd push. They released Humans first, then dwarves, then Undead (cap was lvl 20) Then next was the Tri-Horde push. There was a pretty big consensus that the Troll female was so fugly no one would play them. Their legs looked like a mutated turkey. A comparison of the changes in them and the female tauren can be seen here: http://www.theirisnetwork.org/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/figure8.jpg

As a trivia note, when we started getting Day - Night cycles. I think it was pretty much a consensus that everyone thought *Night* in WoW was really too light or at least, could be darker without hurting much. Many of us came from DAoC and EQ. EQ, certain races can't even see at night without aids. There were many people that called for a blacker night. We were denied, they said No. I find it interesting that Diablo is under the same discussion and I wonder how it will look should they turn on the Fog of War. That was pretty much what the darkness in D2 was.

And that is my rambly thought from seeing the PC gamer article thingy :) I find it amusing that many of the art posts asking for Diablo to be Darker, aka NOT WoW, are asking for something similar to what the Alpha WoW players wanted.

Part of the problem with saving characters is however naming is going to work. Apparently right now, as long as no one makes a new character with your name, it won't get deleted even though it's been past 3 months. As far as MMOs go, you can fill up your limit making new classes on a server, never play them, but the name has been reserved for 4 years. That type of thing kinda sucks. They did say they had not decided on the financial model, so perhaps there will be a pay option to keep the characters stored.

I think the problem I have with it is people seem to be taking an extreme approach and saying, any heal type spells = mmo which = dedicated helpless healer. That's a very skewed and not entirely accurate argument. Healers don't work that way in mmos unless you build them that way. One of the best raid healers I know in WoW, also has a dps set and can push the meters pretty well himself. Sure, he doesn't top them, but he's not helpless by a longshot despite being holy.

People have been asking about group-only content and I don't think they are going to have it. THe dynamic they put in of everyone getting their own loot in a party seems to detract from that. Then, heal orbs heal the entire party. (look up Bashiok on the bnet forums for that one) Since you've got an in-game item healing the party, would make a healish spec class kinda redundant unless they are more focused on support. IE, buffs, removing curses.

I get what you are saying, I just think people are going overboard on it.

I don't know what game you're really talking about here, but in all the games you mentioned, Clerics could cast heals & resurrect just fine, regardless of their god's preferences. In none of those games could you actually choose a god, either (except in BG2 & IWD2, where you could choose subclasses based on deity).

They were also all horrible broken and overpowered. But your point still stands; A healer isn't necessarily a squishy. Just because a class can heal, doesn't mean it has to be it's main focus or anything it can specialize in at all.

Getting into exactly which game do do what would be a long post, boring and not really relavant to the topic. By dark, I simply meant Evil. Didn't say you could pick a deity in all the games ;) There were high heals that the good clerics got that the dark ones did not in the later versions. But, again, it's nitpicky and beside the point really. :offtopic: done :P

*WARNING: I am taking the "dedicated healer" idea simply as a true, healer in the game. If he's a dedicated healer, then I'm going to treat him as the the stereotypical, frail cleric/priest that is in just about every MMORPG. Yes, tough clerics exist in games, such as Baldur's Gate, but there is always a trade off. I.E. an evil cleric has damaging spells but he can't use healing spells.*

I think the problem then, is arguing perfect stereotypes. You can't really argue against a stereotype as it's perfectly miserable no matter what you say about it. Btw, only 1 version of the Baldur's Gate line (out of 6) used the ruleset restricting evil clerics from casting heals.

I played EQ. I knew clerics that soloed well. And I knew those that always won duels.
I played DAoC. Smite clerics ended up getting nerfed because they were so powerful on pvp servers. Friars, smacked rogues around like no ones business.
I play WoW. I have a shadow priest and a tank buddy. We'd try to kill things wth me straight healing, we couldn't. When I added in dps with my heals, we could.

The frail cleric archetype is something created *by choice* by the player.
As pointed out, in D2, people could *choose* to create a cleric paladin. Didn't do great damage, just used auras to mend etc. My cousin played one. He was loved in 8 mans.

Healish classes are a niche role. There are always a few people that gravitate towards that kind of class. I don't think it damaged D2 badly having the option so I'm pretty confident D3 would be fine.

I think rather than say you don't want *healer* classes or spells, you may want to say you don't want necessary heal conditions. IE, it shouldn't be impossible to take down a boss as a group without a healer/tank combo. That is what defines MMOs. NOT the presence of a healish class or spells.

Did anyone here play the Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale or Neverwinter Night lines? Clerics there... kicked ass. Basically, you've got the power of a God behind you, damn straight you can dish out some spells. Dark clerics actually couldn't cast heals or rez of the high spells as it was reasoned, their deity doesn't care to fix wounds, it makes them.

Now granted, all that doesn't quite fall easily in line with the Diablo world. But it's a rpg example that *priest* does NOT mean squishy.

posted a message on Cool downs and Potion using
Cooldowns aren't a WoW thing really. I'll try to think of some examples.
Ultima Online - think the cooldown on pots was 5 minutes? Or was it 2. You couldn't chain chug them and you had to unequip your shield so you'd have a free hand to do it.

Dungeon Siege 2, has special attacks with cooldowns. It's a rpg. If you think of the DnD world, Baldur's Gate etc, all spells have cooldowns as you have to rest to be able to use them again. 1 memomrized spell each game 24 hours basically. RTS's like Dungeon Keeper had cooldowns on the big spells. They basically made them so mana intensive that you could only cast it once, then you had to wait to regen.

The idea is to make you think harder about when you use the option. Not sure how that helps having your head ripped off by an assault beast though.
