Agreed with Guise. I do not believe Diablo I had this problem as much because it had The Butcher and other quests to spice this up, and it was not so dark anyway. Diablo II, on the other hand, creates this bland atmosphere of, uhh, murkiness.
I actually experienced the Diablo franchise backwards.
I beat D1 only after beating D2. When I went from D2 to D1 it felt horrible. Diablo 1 felt like a horrible game upon playing (I had even beaten Act 5 before beating D1.) And no. Neither of the Diablo games were scary to me at all. I always focus on kicking #$$.
Not that the games had bad atmospheres. They had very good atmospheres, just not scary ones.
If you don't like DI you either don't like the genre or have really bad analysis.
Whether a game scares you or not depends dominantly on yourself.
Its not that I think the game is bad. Its just that I missed the time period in which I would have most enjoyed the game. Theres no doubt that D1 was more original and revolutionary for its time.

Who cares when it was done. I recently played Alien Shooter I, and I liked it anyway. Being old doesn't make a game worse. DII lacks a lot of things DI has to offer. DII isn't exactly a 100% positive extension.

I agree with you, I am started playing Quake 3 and I enjoy it.

pokemon blue is my fav rpg to this day. lol.
being old makes a game outdated, but a classic will always be looked at as something to compare to and to surpass.

Remember the String of Ears
"to the worm in horseradish, the world is horseradish."
Sad... I guess you missed out on what made Diablo I so enjoyable.
It was the constant sense of danger and fear of the unknown that made that game so revolutionary.
really, its sad that you missed out on that!
No it became boring when you didn't see a thing. First it was scary then it was just annoying since you already knew that the monsters were everywhere. Diablo 1 was so dark because it was all the time deep down the basement of the frikin cathedral and yes it fits to _that_ game.
Sense of danger has been with me the last days I've played my hc baba. Whirling trough 3 ench bosses make my heart beat a lot or clearing CS alone was pretty intense watching those Iron maidens. Stuff like that scares me out in games, not the effects.
IMO only diablo 1 can be scary of the series, since it didn't have so much action going on. You walked slowly, everything was slower in the game so you had more time to focus on the darkness, sounds etc. D2 went far off from this its just mega massacre where you don't pay attention to the atmosphere of the game. But yeah there are some other things that might scare you in D2 like extra fast bosses running next to you suddenly etc. About D3.. really hard to say anything when you haven't played it. The trailer is like watching a movie.. I think I haven't seen any horror movie lately that would scare me.. they just plain suck nowadays. Horror movies used to scare me when I was less than 14 years old.. after that I just hate them since they offer nothing but screaming and shit.
Someone said about doom3, if you compare doom3 and F.E.A.R. Fear has a lot more light and color used than doom3 and it still is a lot scarier than doom3. Fears cut scenes gave me chills Doom's darkness annoyed me, it didn't take long for people to modify it so that you could have the flashlight with the weapon.. they didn't like the all time dark shit.
And finally to the OP nice found. I have to check the trailer again for these type of effects.
Maybe the whole point is CONTRAST. If it always looked that way, how would you know the atmosphere was becoming more sinister and the room was darkening to summon the monster?
You wouldn't.
Never thought of it like that.
I wasn't really opposed to the graphical take Blizzard took anyway though. I just want to play the damn game.

I vote Guise forum president. All who disagree I'll shoot red with my MK11 and paint OYGBIV on the rest of that ass. :-P

Are you kidding me? Doom 3 scared the fuck out of me! Off course, you get used to the monsters after a while, but there are always places again that are just too freaky, e.g. the episode where you go with the guy with a lantern. Most of the time i had to struggle with myself to go through a friggin door into the (next) darkness. BUT, you should only play it ALONE in a DARKENED room AT NIGHT, just the monitor on, with SURROUND HEADPHONES and volume up so you can hear EVERY SINGLE MOANING, CRYING and SCRATCHING!
"They took my baby..."
To me Doom did a fairly good job, and really had me in the Hell level, but F.E.A.R. did it 10x better. I could make a game complete darkness and have shit jump out at you from the dark and give you that immediate shock, but a game like F.E.A.R. had you constantly fearing what was around the next corner despite the lack of darkness and the whole creepy girl vibe...
To me the Diablo games where never scary, and I hate when people say they need to be scary because they are not! To echo what most people have already said... darkness did not make the game more enjoyable, but in fact made the game a lot more annoying and this is why everyone ended up using maphacks light radius thing anyways.
Maybe the whole point is CONTRAST. If it always looked that way, how would you know the atmosphere was becoming more sinister and the room was darkening to summon the monster?
You wouldn't.
I wouldn't? K.
I love how people who say things like this assume that the changed screens are as 'dark and sinister' as they could ever possibly be. As if there was nothing that could be darker.

Diablo 1. Butcher.
But no, Diablo is not a scary series of games. They are a gothic series of games. There is a difference.
Even further notes: When they cast the spell, they are not sucking the color out of the world, they are lighting the area around it. That blue-green is the absence of light as is demonstrated by any torch of the dungeon. That blue-green is what they call dark.

Because as was already said, if the color wasn't there to begin with, how would you get that sense of evil approaching?
Well put sir, well put.
It's time to welcome the other 80% of the color wheel to a Diablo game.
I agree with you, I am started playing Quake 3 and I enjoy it.
Contrast in light/darkness does however.
If things are just dark all the time you get used to it and you don't have a sense of when to be afraid and when not to.

Yes, we know that more brightly colored areas are a "slap in the face" to Diablo purists.
Yes, we know that "color is your friend" and is being used to improve the game world instead of letting it stagnate.
You know what I think? I think Blizzard needs to release more info so there will finally be something else we can talk about.
Completely agree, I can only hope they release more info soon. My bet is on the 28th.
