If Blizzard had named the class just 'Hunter', it would have brought so strong WoW stereotypes that fans would have sharpened their pitchforks and lit their Molotov cocktails ready to usurp the heathen enemy.
Oh of course, except I am against the whole "hunter" name in general.

Agreed. Hunter is just as unacceptable as "demon hunter".
They need to rename this class to something original and cool.
Hell, I woulda been fine with "demon slayer, or "slayer" rather than demon hunter.
Yeah I would've much preferred slayer over demon hunter or hunter. We typically use the word slay when we kill something evil, a bad person or even a demon at that. And notice that demon hunter is the first (ever?) playable hero in the Diablo series to have two words to its name.

Two words: Witch Doctor.
Other than that, I don't have anything to add to this subject (I did read all the posts).
I don't personally think the Demon Hunter is any worse than the other 4 class names. And it happens to be that my opinion is on the winning side - Blizzard more than likely won't change the name. Either adapt to it or don't play the class.
This ^^ plus I read all the posts too, I don't see anything wrong with this name. I like it, it is my favorite class and I will play it no matter what the hell the name is. Personally Demon Hunter is fine. I don't see anything wrong with the name. She is a hunter of Demons, plus they were actually going to make her a demon in the beginning after they went from Woodland Ranger ---> Dark hunter, So thats where they really got the name from.

I don't dislike the name Demon Hunter, only in this specific case. Two-word class names is not ok :/ I also happen to dislike the Death Knight class name in WoW for the same reason.
I don't have a problem with 2 word class names, but I see where you're coming from. I still don't think its as bad as you're making it seem, but I guess its just opinion. I still don't think its in dire need of a change no matter what. The concept of a Demon Hunter is a pretty common one.
I use my pants a lot as well, do they have an identity? No, they are a tool with a specific set of abilities that I use when I fight my enemies (which I do every day, obviously), they are not people. That makes the difference between a class and a character. D2 has characters, WoW has classes.
Ok maybe the WoW rogue doesn't have an identity, but enough people play it and know about it that its the first thing that comes to mind when a lot of people hear "Rogue."
I won't disagree that Demon Hunter suits the character, it is just a bad name. It doesn't matter who the character is, it won't be good on any of them. Demon Hunter and other two-word names works better in Warcraft because Warcraft (not WoW) doesn't do archetypes.
But once again, "Demon Hunter" fits the ranged archetype as well as "Rogue" does, as both leave open room for interpretation. "Demon Hunter" has just been used less, so people have less of an idea as to what it is, and the D3 Demon Hunter is so far from the WC3 DH that it'll be able to give its own definition of Demon Hunter.
No matter what, when someone says their playing a Rogue I think of a stealth character before a bow character. Not that a Rogue can't be a bow character, but its not like when you hear Rogue you only think of bows and arrows. At least I don't. Same goes for DH, it doesn't point you directly to a ranged class, but it doesn't disqualify it either.
Exactly, the name Demon Hunter doesn't point to a type of gameplay. All the other 4 classes kind of do, as do the classes in D2. To me, that's the main problem.
Well for ranged classes it tends to be harder imo. There just aren't many words that say "Uses bows and arrows" other than Amazon. And I wouldn't say that Witch Doctor, Druid, Monk, or Assassin point to any type of gameplay, but once again none of them disqualify the archetype that they fill.
Druid doesn't point to a type of gameplay? Really? When I think of Druids I think mainly of shapeshifting and nature based spells.
Monks points to martial arts, kind of obvious.
Witch Doctor = spirit caster, meaning zombies and those sort of stuff.
Assassin is a bit harder. D2 defined it strangely ^^
Well for me both Monk and Witch Doctor could point to a healer class, same with Druid. And yes the shapeshifting and nature spells fit the name Druid, but it doesn't really account for the summoning stuff. I mean when I first heard the Druid was a new class in LoD, I didn't think "Oh, he must be like the necro"
That depends on what kind of Monk it is. In this case it is a Shaolin styled monk, which means martial arts.
curious thing i came across the other day where buddist monks or some kinda monks. learned both medicine and martial arts. Just wanted to throw that out there.
Yeah, the Monk does have a few support and protective abilities, so it fits him perfectly
On the contrary, If you think of a monk they are rather pacifists. That would be the first thing to mind. Someone who doesn't want to fight and therefore i don't think the monk is adequately named. The monk sounds so innocent and defensive and it sounds like someone who would wait for the fight to come to him rather than go out and actually take it upon himself to fight the burning legions of hell.

I didn't like "Demon Hunter" at first for many of the reasons listed in this thread. Quite recently, I've learned to like it because of its double connotation. Is she a hunter of demons, or a demonic hunter? Both are partly true.

That is one big problem with these types of words (Eg: Shadow killer, kills shadow or shadowy killer)
Where does it says the demon hunter is demonic? I thought they only had a ruled out concept of that.
I'm still trying to analise this name, i was thinking "the name is right because she hunts them for vengeance" but even if she didn't hate them for what they did to her, she would still want to kill them for peace. The anme is also right because of her story and the clan of demon hunters, argh too much contradiction and simiralism.
Another thought is that Demon Hunter sounds like a job or objective, while barbarians are big dudes, wizards uses magic, *casts flame shield* witch doctor uses necromancy and witchcraft and monk are holy warriors.
They said while unveiling the Demon Hunter that she was demonic, maybe in the Characters Panel at the last BlizzCon. Her eyes glow and she does shadowy acrobatics.
She hates demons for killing her family/town, but she is willing to use dark magic to get better at killing demons. Shes a hunter of demons, not a demonic hunter.
The may reason i dislike the name is because every class hunts demon anyway.
"She hunts demon for profession, while others classes are dragged in this mass". Hmm.. i don't know what to think about this. Flavor wise the demon hunter should be a superior character (at hunting demons) because she is 100% trained for that and only that... But this just not possible because it's unfair.
But flavor wise i believe all classes are equally powerful. In this case the DH is a overall inferior hero because she only hunt demons while the others classes hunts demons and do a lot more...
I don't know. Imo the Demon Hunter flavor breaks the simetry of the classes. Imo all classes ARE demon hunters no matter what blizz said... In pratice everyone will be hunting down demons and cultist all day long =/
Rogue would fit all her skills very well. Would have a better flavor. Would bring nostalgia.
Well the Demon Hunter focuses a lot more on gadgets than the Rouge, which was pretty much all bow skills. Just because theres a class called the Demon Hunter doesn't mean that they're trying to say the other classes don't hunt demons. Saying that "All classes hunt demons, therefore no class should be called a Demon Hunter" has some merit, but doesn't make it so that Demon Hunter is a bad name, and just because she's called a Demon Hunter doesn't mean she doesn't kill monsters and undead as well. In the end the way the class functions is a lot more important than its name.
Also, its not her profession, its her obsession. The DH's town/family was murdered by demons and since then she has hunted them.
I mean, "demon hunter"... Aren't all the classes effectively demon hunters as well?
I lol'd. Never thought of that.
I bet when they were trying to think of a name, they were having trouble thinking of anything rogue-like that wasn't already used. I know I would. Demon Hunter... I'm not crazy about two words for one name... but it does summarize the entire life purpose of the character. The others have ulterior motives. The Wizard wants power and prestige. The Monk wants purity or something. They all have their little "thing." The DH is just...to kill demons.
From that end, it's kinda a storyline cop-out, imo.
Eh, maybe a name cop out, but as far as storyline, I think the DH has a solid reason for huntin demons. I mean you can argue that revenge plots are overdone, but really from what we know about each of the classes rationales (except for the Barb), each of their stories seems weak atm. I mean the only stuff we know about the Monk's and WD's reasoning is that its some kind of religious reason, which, I would say, sounds a lot weaker than killing the demons because they killed your family.

Gives you the basic idea of purpose and conviction, especially to use any means necessary even if unmoral to get the job done.
