posted a message on How many times have you leveled since patch?
Went from 101 to 161ish. At this point, I'm trying to farm legendaries on normal with my Barb so that I have strength legs for my crusader. So I doubt I'll gain more than a level or two between now and Tuesday.

The old loot system would not have existed without the AH though. The Ah was _the_ reason drops were so crappy.
    Drop rates, yes.

The itemization being jacked up had very little to do with the existence of an AH, though. 1.x would have been a lot more enjoyable experience if self-found was viable, but Blizzard continues to insist that drop rates have to be balanced around trading (which is their #1 justification for BoA). To me this means they don't understand what the primary problem with 1.x was and *why* people were flocking to the AH in droves.

Tying drop rates to the presence of trading (or the lack thereof) is the general design philosophy that didn't work in 1.x and, yet, that's basically what they're doing in 2.x. "No trading means we can increase drop rates!" OK... right. But you could have tried to increase drop rates without removing trading and see how that works when there is no AH and all "transactions" need to be bartered and are item-for-item instead of item-for-lump-of-gold.

In reality the primary issue with the AH was it was too convenient and it didn't require you to have something of value to me (and vice-versa) since gold was universally-valued. If I found an item that you didn't want, I'd just sell it to someone else and then use that gold to buy your item. If, instead, we had to go item-for-item... suddenly it's nowhere near as easy to find a trade... and instead of going on to Amazon.com (the AH) to buy your item it's more like you have to go to a swap meet, walk around, see everything, and then haggle with the owner.

That being said, the RMAH didn't "destroy" anything because they certainly didn't balance drop rates around the RMAH. Drop rates were balanced around the GAH since that was the one that they figured everyone would use. The RMAH was just a method by which they took $$$ away from 3rd party sites.

The accessibility definitely made the RMAH more popular than D2JSP but, frankly, I'm sick of people who know no self-control whining that Blizzard needs to put in limits so that they don't ruin things for themselves. I'm sick of things that I enjoy going the way of the dodo bird because other people will use the AH 24/7 even though they hate it because they need to have the absolute best gear and then blame Blizzard.... as if Blizzard ever really intended for people to sit in the AH screen all day every day. It's just a lack of responsibility and ownership of your own decisions at that point.
True. Whether or not there is an AH or trading, they needed to fixed itemization. The fact that almost any weapon not called "Echoing Fury", "Skorn", or "Manitcore" was utter crap compared to even a mediocre rolled EF/Skorn/Manticore was a huge problem. The reduced emphasis on trifecta gear has helped make more stuff viable. But I'm worried gear is still too cookie cutter assuming you actually get the pieces you want to drop. In many ways, I pick my spec based on what drops not the other way around. I'm having lots of fun now but I do wonder how that will hold up in the future.

If you're going to allow more liberal trading rules, you might as well have a RMAH. Because with trading comes 3rd party sites and real money trades. If you have a 1st party RMAH, then you (e.g. Blizzard) get to profit from it, monitor it's rate of use in your game (and balance according), and reduce the amount of account hacks you have to deal with.

Right now, Blizzard wants the only way you acquire legendary gear to be directly based on playing the game. Which is why you can only trade with people you played with and no clan trading. I like the fact that the number of legendaries (good, bad, or mediocre) you possess is proportional to the amount of time you played. As long as Blizzard favors this philosophy, I don't see AHs coming back or BoA going away. However, Blizzards philosophies do evolve over time so never say never.

Blizzard has already said that they don't want D3 ladders to work like D2 ladders. My guess is that ladders will be added side by side with Campaign and Adventure mode. It will be like a third mode (e.g., a "Challenge" mode) with leaderboards.

As other people have said, D3 has never been about making new characters. There's never been a need toreroll. You only need to make 5 characters (10 if you want to play both genders, get achievements, etc.). But after that, there's never a need. At least not in softcore anyway.I'm not saying its right or wrong. Just how it seems to me. (I rerolled all the time in D2. Not once in D3.)

I'm beginning to wonder if D3 ladders will truly be a separate character distinction (like HC vs SC). I'm guessing the new ladders will be more objective based (e.g. try and kill this new uber boss/area) rather than just "make a character and level". And then you're scored based on speed, kill rate, survivability, etc. And to balance it out, when doing a ladder objective, your character's paragon level just doesn't count or doesn't apply. Thus, there are no character resets and no need to roll new characters. But the "wall of bone" (possible the scoreboard showing your feats against demons?) can be reset as often as they like. Daily? Weekly? Monthly? Season?

They could also make legendaries whose effects simply don't work (or are muted) unless you're in a ladder objective. Kinda like resilience(?) in WoW.

    Just a wild guess anyway.

I blew the years of dust off my DH and played around with the grenade spec a few days ago. I had way way way more fun than I ever expected.

I played DH right at launch, got stuck trying to kill Diablo on Hell difficulty, rerolled a different class and never came back until very recently. It's like night and day from when I last remember playing it.

I've seen prices tumbling the last few days. Maybe they will pick up over the weekend. It's hard to say what will happen on March 17. If prices continue to tumble, they will still be low on March 17. But if prices just fluctuate as normal, March 17 could see a bump.

My guess though is that supply will vastly overtake demand between now and March 17, thus meaning falling prices.

posted a message on Is Loot 2.0 > Loot 1.0?
I think Blizzard basically eliminated MF to smooth out the legendary drop rate. With high MF in 1.0, you could get legendaries faster than you could now in 2.0. However with low MF in 1.0, the legendary drop rate was awful, particularly for new players and those characters first leveling up.

A reasonable argument could me made that the drop rate is too high now. But I think what Blizzard wants is a fairly consistent experience across all players. Newer players see legendaries often enough to be excited by them. Veteran players however don't see them so often that they feel they can pop them on command. Legendary droughts are bad and better slightly too many than too few.

At least, that's my take on things

According to PassMark, the Nvidia GTX 750 (not the TI model, just the plain 750) is one of the best video card values in terms of performance per dollar. They run about $119~$129 bucks. There's also a comparable AMD model if you'd prefer that brand. You might be able to get an older card for slightly cheaper but you get less for your money.

I can't say exactly how well it will play, but I used to play Diablo 3 just fine on my old GTX 260 and this 750 should be beefier than that.

posted a message on Is Loot 2.0 > Loot 1.0?
I'm having a blast with the new 2.0 system, although part of that is that is because I like the increased focus on toughness and decreased focus on healing. (For example, I'm having tons of fun with DH in Torment I. Despite the fact I'm slightly under geared, I can play it more conservatively and not go splat. It's not totally efficient but it is fun.)

Despite the fact that my Wizard was decently geared before 2.0 (MP5 farm, MP6 with some effort), I'm having a great time with the new loot. My couple of "meh" pieces were immediately replaced on the first day or two. And since then, I've been experimenting with several "side-grades". For example, I've rotated through several sets of bracers and gloves not because they do more DPS (it's probably been a 2~3% dps loss) but because of the toughness and healing gained. Also, I'm currently using a 2.0 Azurewrath and a 2.0 Triumvirate. My paper dps is lower than my Scorn but the +Frost and +Lightning skill damage is just too much fun.

Plus is been a blast to constantly rotate between different specs including things like Ray of Frost which I don't see get a lot of hype (but I like it and it's Torment 1 viable at least). I'm experimenting way more than I ever have in a Diablo game and it's been a blast.

I dont like the fact that Blizzard really feels that they need to tell us how we should play the game. As soon as someone on twitch/reddi/diablofans finds something it will instantly get nerfed because that is not how Blizzard want us to play. D3 have none of the freedom that D2 had.
I concur with both of these statements. I was perma banned from Diablo 3 forums because I expressed my freedom of speech telling them what they are doing wrong and how they are ruining the game. The first silenced me then they perma banned me 2 offences perma ban pretty sad really but I don't care they cant silence the mass's that are flooding their forums as we speak about their ignorance.
Freedom of Speech prevents government censure of speech given in a public forum. Nothing more.
This is just another form of censorship by taking our constitutional rights out of context. The constitution states freedom of speech, not freedom of speech where we say you can have freedom of speech. People like you are the reason America is losing all its constitutional rights. You think that my freedom of speech doesn't matter because its a forum provided by said company which in all actuality it doesn't. The internet wasn't around when the constitution was written if it was they would have added a wonderful clause for people like you that states "Freedom of speech cannot be infringed apon by any entity foreign or domestic, private or public. Therefore, all citizens will be allow to express their freedom of speech whenever and wherever they please."
So I can go over to your house and spray paint my opinions on your walls and there is nothing you can do about it? Ok, got it.

They probably also realized that no matter what they did, there would be skills that were mostly unused. It's just too hard to balance them . The problem with skill trees is that they (at least in every RPG I've ever played that used them), never really add as much depth as they appear to. Most skills fall into one of three categories for any particular spec/build:

That is very lazy and inaccurate. Many people have played Magic the Gathering and that game has lived forever by players finding innovated ways to play. Many of the obvious choices and many lesser known ways also come up and then they have rule changes and new cards release to make things interesting again. D3 keeps hacking itself to death every time it takes one step forward and 100 babies cry.

There is nothing stopping Blizz from introducing newer legends (they do anyway) to make interesting builds more interesting over time instead of just saying 'people will only play one way anyway'

    Major lazy cop out
Except that every once and a while, Magic screws up and either makes turn 1 kills possible or creates a card so overpowered that it dominates the game (e.g., Necropotence). And usually the corrective action is restrict or ban the offending card. That sounds like Magic is "telling people how to play".Not saying its common but it happens.

If something is overused or overpowered, it should be balanced. It may be annoying in the short term, but it's better for the long-term life of the game.
