I don't think the "illusion of choice" will ever go away. However, I heard on one of the developer interviews (forget which one), that they're attempting to make it harder by essentially making the math "fuzzier". Effectively, his argument went like this:

Skill trees tend to be pure math. Skill X does more damage than skill Y so always choose skill X. But he compared it to the skill that allowed crusaders to equip a two hander and a shield (at the loss of 10%? movement speed). Will a two hander + shield always do more damage than a 1hander + shield? Probably. But by having the reduction in movement speed, is your character more efficient? Harder to say. He called it a "lore tradeoff".

Personally, I think 2.0.1 did the best job I've seen thus far of balancing damage, survivability, and efficiency. At least, I hope it will stay that way for a while until people are so geared it doesn't matter.

SO what you both above are saying is we are going to go "backwards"? You say diablo 1 has no skill trees that's correct there was books to learn skills and yes you could learn them all. Then we progressed to the skill tress because having everything is pointless and adds nothing but boredom to the game. Then we should progress further not go backwards back to having everything was my point.
I think you're putting words in other people's mouths (hence the accusations of trolling).

Please explain in more detail why you feel that not having skill trees is "going backwards". I think you'll find that many people don't agree with you that it's going backwards. Diablo 3's skill system is an evolution to the skill tree concept and, while not perfect, I much prefer it to Diablo 2.

They did. But it was very late in the Beta and it seems that many people are still unaware.

Well, Josh just tweeted that he was in Korea and had recently finished interviews for RoS.

So don't know if the translation is correct, but he's definitely in Korea and saying things. :)
That definitely corroborates an important part of the story. Hopefully the translations are correct and it's not some Korean region only gimmick with their local equivalent of Gamestop or whatever. :-)

Sorry for being a little bit confused, but if I understand it right then it means everyone who pre-ordered/purchased the CE or DDE even if its not from battle.net, they will get this yellow wings (which called wings of valor if I got it right) and the other stuff which was mentioned with CE and DDE. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I wanna make sure and dont hope for something which wont come in the future.
There's absolutely no details other than this vague Korean translation. It's not been officially confirmed at all by Blizzard. But I do find the fact that Blizzard hasn't denied this post yet (when it's been available all afternoon) to be very interesting.....

Not to split hairs, but I'm not really sure we can accurately determine "pre-purchase" vs "pre-order" from someone's unverified Korean translation.

However, I'll be the first to admit, I could be totally wrong. The proposed patch date is very plausible given all the reasons people have suggested. However, I'm having trouble recalling a previous time where blizzard included an extra pre-order/purchase bonus that wasn't explicitly stated at a product announcement. If Blizzard is anything, it's methodical to a fault. Extras are announced because extras make people pre-order/purchase.

In summary, this Korean post is just reasonable enough to be believable. But if it turns out to be a hoax, I wouldn't be surprised at all.

Is it just me or does this whole thing smell of being fake? I mean, I guess I wouldn't be that surprised if 2.0 launched about 3 weeks away from the expansion. But if wings were free to all pre-orders, wouldn't they have advertised that explicitly from the beginning in order to get more preorders?

posted a message on Thoughts on latest PTR/Beta

Just a day or so ago, I started a new Demon Hunter on the PTR. I must admit, I haven't had this much fun since the game first launched. Granted, I'm only only lvl 44 and I've only played on normal. But this is the first time I've actually looked at loot or cared what dropped. The only disappointment has been that 5 out of my 8 or so legendaries have been rings or amulets. I also found the same boots twice, just on different levels.

posted a message on gems, gold, and the new expansion

I'm pretty sure Marquise gems start dropping by level 70 if not sooner. Therefore any gems you stockpile now will be totally eclipsed by a single drop. The jury is still out on gold. Right now crafting and enchanting is considered expensive so gold may help. But if crafting costs are reduced and/or gold drops are buffed, it may not matter.

posted a message on Im confused about new paragon 2.0....is it an initial downgrade?

In the Patch 2.0.1 PTR (not ROS), I've already found 300/300 gear with reduced level requires that I can equip at 60 and below.

Have you played the PTR? I'm not sure what you mean by "drastic deficit". Monster power has been totally rescaled and many skills have been buffed. Also, you can spend paragon points on crit hit chance/damage, which I've found to be a much better increase to dps than just pure main stat.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I found that the PTR plays differently enough that worrying about a few hundred main stat just isn't worthwhile as it's compensated for in many other ways.

Except that your average piece of gear at lvl61 has 300 main stat plus 300 vit, as compared to 200/200 on a top-end piece before. And it only gets more crazy as you get to level 70.

posted a message on Nephalem Trials, adding competition to Diablo.
True. The original post only uses the term "stronger" which is rather ambiguous. They could cap the damage and a) increase the monster health and/or B) change the monster attack pattern. However, I'm not certain that those two things by themselves would guarantee increasing difficulty. High health monsters can be kited and different attack patterns may be more or less difficult to different classes.

More than likely this would turn into a "enrage timer" type of scenario, where you can't kill a wave of high health mobs before the next wave spawns and eventually you're so surrounded by mobs that you can't even kite them and you die. That's certainly more appealing of a scenario than being one-shot. One downside is that certain classes and class mechanics would have more natural advantages in a soft enrage setting. Thus, some classes/builds would never want to compete as they would never be able to top the leader boards. (As one example, I'm thinking of classes with the ability to become immune to damage plus cooldown reductions versus class(es) without a damage immunity spell. I seem to remember Barbs getting the short end of the stick very early in 1.0 Diablo 3 but I could be misremembering.)

Blizzard has already said countless times that "Endless Horde" mode has problems. In that, as the mobs get harder and harder, eventually they will one-shot you. So when you play endless horde, it will basically go "I'm awesome. I'm awesome. I'm awesome. I GOT CHEAPSHOT BY A SKELETON ARCHER ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE SCREEN. $%&#@!". Granted the entire point is that, at some point, you will be overwhelmed and die. But dying from one-shots just isn't fun. With the exception of the occasional boss mechanic, Blizzard is usually not in the habit of one-shoting properly geared and spec'ed players at *any* difficulty level. (Diablo 3 Inferno 1.0 being a notable exception which was heavily patched into the current system we have now specifically because of the one-shot problem.) Also, not sure an endless horde mode that basically guarantees an eventual death will go over well with the hardcore crowd.

But I like the basics of time attack mode. Though, I think time attack leader boards would need to be reset weekly and possibly maps changed daily to keep it fresh.

posted a message on 3 easy fixes for itemization in D3
There's really no simple way to nerf critical hit damage without making some other stat immediately become the new flavor-of-the-month. Not to mention that if one stat is nerfed without monster difficulty being rebalanced, you'll have lots of people screaming that content that was beatable yesterday (and many many months before yesterday) is now no longer beatable. It's a step backwards to many people.

The only way (that I see) that you can have many unique stats which are all useable is that certain stats must be amazing in certain builds and situations while simultaneously *awful* in other builds and situations. For example, perhaps make 2H barbarians want crit damage (and penalize them for having attack speed) while dual wield barbarians want attacked speed (and penalize them for having crit damage). I totally concede that this idea has many other issues with it, but something has to be done to combat certain stats being appealing to every class. Otherwise, things like the "trifecta" are mandatory.

In terms of stats, I kinda think CMWW is really one of the more inventive builds. (Yes, it has balance issues but it's interesting to me at least). In this case, crit chance is as much about *survivability* as it is damage. And if you're doing CMWW on a budget, it's viable to sacrifice INT and crit damage in order to pick up more attack speed and crit hit chance. Not that every build should necessarily work like CMWW, but it's in keeping with the direction Blizzard wants to take itemization. (i.e. What's vital to me isn't vital or even good for everyone else.)

posted a message on Patch 1.0.9 Preview, a dream...
The OP has a couple of new twists on some old ideas. It's only getting this much attention because it's written to trick people into thinking it's official patch notes. I don't care how many disclaimers were shoehorned in later, there's already people commenting in this thread on how they were, at least for a time, under the mistaken assumption that this was from Blizzard. One should not need to dupe people in order to get their ideas read.

The trading post would be tons of UI and database work for very little reward. As it is, it's hard to sell decent items for gold. I can't imagine how many items will go untraded.

I think Blizzard is saving the Mystic for something, possibly as a way to tweak items. I'm not sure if that would be to add a stat, buff a stat, or re-roll a stat. I suspect itemization is taking so long because Blizzard still sees an underlying weakness in the itemization system as they've announced it. Even if your rolls are better, if they base stats are still crap, the item is worthless. And drop rates are being reduced to compensate for better rolls so I suspect that good items will still be hard to find individually, although collectively there may be more good items on the AH. Again, the Mystic might be a good way for a player to tweak a decent self-found item at the expense of making it BoA. #JustAThought
