And if I could actually get into the PTR without 8+ hour queues, this would mean something.

I like that the game has a strong loot/RNG component. I simply don't have enough time to do "gated" content like raids in MMOs. With Diablo 3, i can log on, do a rift, and possibly find an upgrade in five minutes.
The problem is that legendary powers on items in D3 are too macroscopic. You have the legendary, you have the power. Done. Yes, you want a legendary item with good rolls as well. But in some cases like a Condemn crusader, even a "meh" Blade of Prophecy can be better than a good any-other-weapon. If you don't have the item, the build is severely hobbled and sometimes even unplayable past T4~T6 (depending on your gems, rings, paragon level, spec, etc.)
I definitely don't want to make this game a clone of PoE. But i do like in PoE that you equip many many gems which each give a relatively minor bump to a stat, skill, etc. Thus, you've lots of room to make small upgrades to your character as you play. And if you're still missing that one optimal gem (or have one item with slightly less than ideal coloring/linking), you're only a few percent DPS below optimal. You're usually not crippled.
I like the idea of items/equipment directly buffing skills (as opposed to skill points). The issue is that everyone needs access to "Item X" in order to not be locked out of a build. But not everyone should have instant access to "Item X +9" with nice extra stat modifiers. Those extra modifiers should come from playing the game. I think both PoE and Diablo 3 have taken different approaches to this problem and it will be interesting to see how both games evolve/tweak their concepts over time. -

Is it just me or does the annoyance of trials vary a lot with spec? (I'm speaking as a solo crusader.)
As a vacuum/condem crusader, trials were pretty quick and doable. In contrast as a vacuum crusader, grifts and particularly grift bosses got annoying.
But as the new Rolands fire shield bash spec, trials are very annoying and noticeably more time consuming. But grift bosses in particular seem more manageable. (Granted I don't have nearly as much play time with Rolands as I did with vacuum crusader.)
Its like trials are about AOE and grifts are about bosses (single target DPS). It's like I'm rated on one skill, but then tested via another.

Jul 18, 2014thatFPGAguy posted a message on 2.1 PTR Patch datamined - 2H Weapon Changes!Admittedly, I played Wizard a lot in D3V and almost none in ROS. (Not because I didn't like it but because I had lots of fun with the Crusader.)Posted in: News
I'm probably in a minority but I enjoyed playing Ray of Frost/Disintegrate builds back in D3V. I was only rolling MP5/6 but I had fun. I was not a huge fan of the CM playstyle. With the channeling spells, I liked my Skorn (for many reason). So in RoS for Wizards, I could see that channeling could favor 2handers and straight casting could favor 1handers. There's already a built-in mechanic to differentiate their uses. Maybe 2handers still suck, but with enough buffs there's a reason.
For monks and barbs, I guess tempest rush and whirlwind could make a comeback? These channeling mechanics could certainly be accentuated to benefit most from 2handers. But there are other issues to balance like effective moment speed and survivability that would have to be worked out. -
May 20, 2014thatFPGAguy posted a message on Diablo II Ladder Reset – May 27, Anniversary Buff Not Ninja Nerfed, Lightning Monk Build, Full 6 Marauder Set Bonus: Rift RunsI've been doing solo T1 rifts and my leg drop rate has been noticeably higher. However, I might be biased as I've probably had about 8~`10 plans drop thus far which has been neat as the recipes are way easier to make now. I've also found two shards of hate so the excitement over that has overwhelmed the piles of junk that I've salvaged.Posted in: News

Skill trees tend to be pure math. Skill X does more damage than skill Y so always choose skill X. But he compared it to the skill that allowed crusaders to equip a two hander and a shield (at the loss of 10%? movement speed). Will a two hander + shield always do more damage than a 1hander + shield? Probably. But by having the reduction in movement speed, is your character more efficient? Harder to say. He called it a "lore tradeoff".
Personally, I think 2.0.1 did the best job I've seen thus far of balancing damage, survivability, and efficiency. At least, I hope it will stay that way for a while until people are so geared it doesn't matter.

Please explain in more detail why you feel that not having skill trees is "going backwards". I think you'll find that many people don't agree with you that it's going backwards. Diablo 3's skill system is an evolution to the skill tree concept and, while not perfect, I much prefer it to Diablo 2.

However, I'll be the first to admit, I could be totally wrong. The proposed patch date is very plausible given all the reasons people have suggested. However, I'm having trouble recalling a previous time where blizzard included an extra pre-order/purchase bonus that wasn't explicitly stated at a product announcement. If Blizzard is anything, it's methodical to a fault. Extras are announced because extras make people pre-order/purchase.
In summary, this Korean post is just reasonable enough to be believable. But if it turns out to be a hoax, I wouldn't be surprised at all.

Just a day or so ago, I started a new Demon Hunter on the PTR. I must admit, I haven't had this much fun since the game first launched. Granted, I'm only only lvl 44 and I've only played on normal. But this is the first time I've actually looked at loot or cared what dropped. The only disappointment has been that 5 out of my 8 or so legendaries have been rings or amulets. I also found the same boots twice, just on different levels.

I'm pretty sure Marquise gems start dropping by level 70 if not sooner. Therefore any gems you stockpile now will be totally eclipsed by a single drop. The jury is still out on gold. Right now crafting and enchanting is considered expensive so gold may help. But if crafting costs are reduced and/or gold drops are buffed, it may not matter.

In the Patch 2.0.1 PTR (not ROS), I've already found 300/300 gear with reduced level requires that I can equip at 60 and below.
Have you played the PTR? I'm not sure what you mean by "drastic deficit". Monster power has been totally rescaled and many skills have been buffed. Also, you can spend paragon points on crit hit chance/damage, which I've found to be a much better increase to dps than just pure main stat.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I found that the PTR plays differently enough that worrying about a few hundred main stat just isn't worthwhile as it's compensated for in many other ways.

Except that your average piece of gear at lvl61 has 300 main stat plus 300 vit, as compared to 200/200 on a top-end piece before. And it only gets more crazy as you get to level 70.

More than likely this would turn into a "enrage timer" type of scenario, where you can't kill a wave of high health mobs before the next wave spawns and eventually you're so surrounded by mobs that you can't even kite them and you die. That's certainly more appealing of a scenario than being one-shot. One downside is that certain classes and class mechanics would have more natural advantages in a soft enrage setting. Thus, some classes/builds would never want to compete as they would never be able to top the leader boards. (As one example, I'm thinking of classes with the ability to become immune to damage plus cooldown reductions versus class(es) without a damage immunity spell. I seem to remember Barbs getting the short end of the stick very early in 1.0 Diablo 3 but I could be misremembering.)

But I like the basics of time attack mode. Though, I think time attack leader boards would need to be reset weekly and possibly maps changed daily to keep it fresh.

The only way (that I see) that you can have many unique stats which are all useable is that certain stats must be amazing in certain builds and situations while simultaneously *awful* in other builds and situations. For example, perhaps make 2H barbarians want crit damage (and penalize them for having attack speed) while dual wield barbarians want attacked speed (and penalize them for having crit damage). I totally concede that this idea has many other issues with it, but something has to be done to combat certain stats being appealing to every class. Otherwise, things like the "trifecta" are mandatory.
In terms of stats, I kinda think CMWW is really one of the more inventive builds. (Yes, it has balance issues but it's interesting to me at least). In this case, crit chance is as much about *survivability* as it is damage. And if you're doing CMWW on a budget, it's viable to sacrifice INT and crit damage in order to pick up more attack speed and crit hit chance. Not that every build should necessarily work like CMWW, but it's in keeping with the direction Blizzard wants to take itemization. (i.e. What's vital to me isn't vital or even good for everyone else.)

The trading post would be tons of UI and database work for very little reward. As it is, it's hard to sell decent items for gold. I can't imagine how many items will go untraded.
I think Blizzard is saving the Mystic for something, possibly as a way to tweak items. I'm not sure if that would be to add a stat, buff a stat, or re-roll a stat. I suspect itemization is taking so long because Blizzard still sees an underlying weakness in the itemization system as they've announced it. Even if your rolls are better, if they base stats are still crap, the item is worthless. And drop rates are being reduced to compensate for better rolls so I suspect that good items will still be hard to find individually, although collectively there may be more good items on the AH. Again, the Mystic might be a good way for a player to tweak a decent self-found item at the expense of making it BoA. #JustAThought
