ya i have been trying to come up with a good way to collect data, that seems to be the key issue. a bot that sniffs the game will most definitely get you in some dirt with warden. manual input seems slow and tedious and susceptible to human error...

So, since there wont be a sigil to boast on your bragflag (press G) for betamaxed or overachiever take screencaps here in the last hours of the diablo 3 beta. It was awesome and the game will be some sort of scientific notation exponent of added awesomeness.

I got there in patch13/14. After that I didn't have enough time and and it definitely got harder to achieve it because of mobs getting more hit points.

So post your screenshots and brag away!

    Too much complaints, man.
Friends, can we just trust those three guys? Those men work to give you the best game they can make. Give them a break.

"it's a blizzard game" trust these words. They will not release a game unless they themselves are staying up till 2 or 3 in the morning playing the game saying "this game is the best game ever".

its pretty amazing seeing how they went through the process of knowing it was problematic and just not good and then took it to the amazing place(yes the beta is amazing right now). this is an extremely hard and challenging process considering the possibility of failure of such situations.

it will be a lot less fun than inferno i think, in inferno you will be working with gems, gear and a but ton of skill rune combos, also bad guys are gonna wall you teleport to you freeze you in place and then spawn a bunch of little dude that do the same thing. SK cleaves you and then raises skelly's.

he would definitely be super hard naked in 4 player solo but skill wise its totally doable, just a timed rinse and repeat situation.

oh no no no, I'm not anti science at all. The game is number based down to it's core, I'm cool with it =D I just wanted to share my thoughts on the subject, and why i'm stoked about D3's skills!

awesome, i think i put that out there because people can be that way... ya this game is going to be a whole different monster when it comes to gameplay compared to most any other game.

the skills alone make for a truly variable skill option... even in beta i was seeing how certain things work and certain dont, but there are many ways to do it right. even if there are ten best options... thats huge.

You know what's awesome about D3? All the math in the world won't be able to accurately foresee the best skill in the game. There's so many little, tiny things that nobody notices until they play it that has such a HUGE impact on gameplay. Take the wizards Arcane Torrent. A channeled spell that does mass AOE damage at the target location you pick. What it doesn't tell you is how long the spell takes to reach the target (longer than other spells) and that it's pretty slow in reaction time if you move the target elsewhere. Still an awesome spell, but it's something like that that completely changes up how good a spell is.

The WD's poison dart with splintering rune. All the math is in the tooltip, but it takes actual gameplay to realize the animation of firing three dots means you stand there for a quarter of a second longer before being able to move, making it less effecting in certain situations.

I'm just in full on Blizzard Fanboy mode and I'm in awe at how awesome this game is going to be, and all the little things we can't even theory craft on until we play at release =D

I totally get this, and even agree with you. I have some of my own ideas about how to use this in conjunction with actual gameplay though.

first off why is everyone so anti-sicence? we will methodically study the game, record our findings, reproduce them and report them aback to you all on the forums

I want to just play this game and not think about it the same as all you guys. But the idea is to improve upon empirically learned strategy with some analysis of straight up numbers. Also i just wanna take the game community to the next level, even if this spreadsheet doesn't work its a stepping stone to something else that will.

Ya i only got this far but only put like an hour into it... I am starting to see how difficult this is actually....

mainly because of the different types of attacks

some are straight damage type skills, then there is channeled, defensive, echoed skills, AOE, Shaped AOE.... uhhhhh im starting to get intimidated by this idea. but others should download it and see if they want to add or have better ways to just write down the actual amounts of damage, healing, defensive abilities

These games foster scientific practice and use of the scientific method. I enjoy the analytic side of these things, it brings me satisfaction and I believe others too. It's not so fun to just hate on other peoples fun, but feel free to troll if you like.

Before I spend like a day on this just wondering if the community would find this at all helpful or conversely duplicitous because someone already has it out there... point me to it if so!

The lack of a specced API isn't fatal, it just means whatever software you use to gather data has to go through the human interface elements, which won't be nearly as efficient.

I suggest this being a very bad idea to anyone out there, Warden (if warden is working for diablo as it does for WoW in catching bots) will most likely catch and suspend your account and you will be violation of the EULA. I believe blizzard to have this game on total lockdown for bots and modding and data collection because of the effects it would put into play on the economy.

I am extremely happy with this discussion and glad people out there take this theory into consideration.

I am curious if there are observable and recordable data points that one person or a group of people could collect that the game denies you

obviously there is the gold to dollar exchange rate over time, that data doesn't seem to be available in the beta except for the past tent trades and the last days worth of trades. A larger data set could be used for pattern recognition.

The lack of an API for the AH's means that a full set or automated collection of data will never be available unless Blizzard just puts it out there (and monkeys might fly our of my butt).

So what could we as a community collect that would be worth analyzing?

...If I am getting it right, it seems, that the ultimate value in the game is Time, the more time you put in the more probabilistic gear and gold/$ you will get. You can buy time away from others through the dollar value which will change over time because of the supply and demand of in game items and gold. <--open to critique and correction! I am a complete laymen to economics and trying to get a basic understanding through rad peeps on the forums who are much much smarter than me.

    Thanks dudes and dudettes

Am I the only one that thinks there are too many variables and not enough late-game information to make accurate predictions at this point? We can only speculate about the value of gold because we do not know how late-game gold drops will work. Not all the items have been set yet. Blizzard can also "tweak" the economy by changing or adding items via patches.

I think this is a great place for us to start!
lets try and come up with a finite list of all the tools blizzard could use to change the economy.
heres what I see right now
    -$ flat fee
    -gold drop rate
-total item variation and item count
-the data they give us for last ten trades and last day of trades for gold to $

    any more?
