GAMES ARE NARROW-MINDED; the WORST thing that could happen to Diablo would be trying to be a fantasy game for all people.

How does that definition not perfectly capture the mood of the first and second games of the series?

Definition 7 is exactly what we mean (I'm not sure if you are for or against the current art direction).

Dude, you've been spouting one-liners about being a "supportive" and a "true fan" for days.

    OK, OK, we get it.

Blizzard, get this guy the "ULTRA MEGA TRUE FAN" STICKER PRONTO so he can wear it on his backpack.

Everyone will care, that Sol Invictus, really was there the day of the great Diablo reckoning, when the evil henchmen of Disagreeland came and stared publishing evil opinions about a long-awaited game.

Sol, in an epic show of courage and fearlessness, started a thread about how much supported Blizzard. He is Blizzard's avatar in a dark world where no one would defend the helpless and hapless company.

The fight was brutal, but eventually he and his army of Sycophants (a type of elephant???) defeated the Opinionated Ones and sent them back to the darkness they crawled from.

I, for one, hail Sol Invictus.

I cant beleive how many people have complained that diablo 3 isnt dark enough.

    Bull fucking crap.

Look from what i remember, you all wanted the same camera angle, which you got. You wanted next gen graphics, which you also got. And you wanted the same dark and gothic feel, without the cartoony feel, which in my opinion, you got. Yet its just not good enough is it?

Go and watch the gameplay video again. Look at the darkness, the lack of light, the statues and crumbling walls, the mist and fog and eerie lower depths of the dungeon. Its just like diablo 2 with a massive facelift. I for one couldnt be happier.

So we see outside. Oh no, its light outside! No shit. Oh no, bushes are green and not grey! No shit. What did you expect.

Somebody show me a comparison between diablo 3 and the "cartoony" blizzard games like warcraft 3 or WoW which actually looks the same. Any money says you cant do it.

Oh and they take a few ideas from WoW. Why is that a bad thing? WoW has over 10 million subscribers. They must be doing something right with that bloody game! Why not take a few things from it and adapt it into diablo 3?

Does anyone here at these forums actually think diablo 3 isnt dark enough? You actually think its too cartoony?

Let me know cos i want to find you and do stuff to you.

How much money? Will you ban yourself from the forums and allow admins to delete your account if I can do so?

No, no, it's definitely OK to disagree with me with good arguments.

I will definitely flame hard anyone who uses BAD ARGUMENTS to support their side, because it shows they can't use logic and don't deserve respect.

It's really easy to shout whatever slogans the mob uses and not use any critical thinking skills. In contrast, it is much harder to do so when you are constantly attacked, as say, an "untrue" fan for not falling in lockstep with everyone else.

Anyone who uses good arguments I engage with constructively. Unfortunately, many people on this forum like use to use one-liners, exaggerations, and flaming and don't know how discuss things. If all they know how to do is flame, well, better talk to them in a language they can understand.

posted a message on ‘Diablo III’ Producer Justifies Controversial Art Direction: ‘Color Is Your Friend’
    Quote from "Hunter-Wolf" »
Just to get some facts straight, all the following is derived from the Art panels with the Devs of both SC2 and D3 art teams !!!

Blizz only made/finished two 3D games until now, and in them we clearly can see they have a distinctive unique 3D style ( that some might not like ), those two games are WoW and WC3 ( with all their expansions ), it is a coincidence they both happen to be from the same universe, which gives a false impression that they do that style for WC only, but no, that's their approach to ANY 3D game they will make ( WC related or not ) , and people are supposed to respect that.

Blizzard never and will never make realistic looking games with over used reflection, bumpmaps and brownish/grayish tones because they look completely dull, unartistic and boring, that's simply not their style at all, their style in ANY 3D game will be stylized, based on use of color, use of hand painted detailed textures, and this style will be used in EVERY 3D game the will make, simple as that ( clearly said by the devs during their art panels in WWI )

So don't expect Blizz to be making any realistic games any time in the future, it is a whole company artistic vision and approach to have stylized games, ANY 3D game they make will have that ( That was said during SC2 art panel too )

So the only thing they will do is try to strike a balance between their stylized art style and realism, and that what D3 does perfectly ( and that will be even more clear when the game development progresses, if only people would wait )

People can disagree whether D3 does that perfectly. As of now, I don't think it does.

But more important is that I never got the memo. When I watched that video stream from the WWI, I never understood since when Blizzard adopted this core principle of their "stylized" look. I never got the damn memo!

Since 2000, we can agree that those years were the years of Warcraft. But before then, we saw that Blizzard has CLEARLY capable to having very different art styles. Diablo I/II, Starcraft, and Warcraft II all looked extremely different - do you agree?

But all of a sudden, now, in 2008, they reveal this new design "principle" I never knew before. A casual fan would assume, since all the games they've really produced since DII expansion have been Warcraft, that that look only pertained to the Warcraft series. Now all of a sudden they are telling fans who crave that Gothic Diablo look that it's no longer possible because of a new principle that no one had ever heard before?

Call me a cynic, but I think at least part of it is that they feel it would be more economical to use the updated Warcraft engine than develop something totally new and innovative. After working on the art for WoW for so long, I imagine that it would difficult to separate yourself from that art style. Very difficult. And you tend to go with the easiest path sometimes when you've been doing something for so long, even when it doesn't really fit.

What I hope is that the petition, as small and probably minority as it is, opens their eyes to the fact that:

    1) Not everyone enjoys the stylized WoW look

    2) They may have fallen into the "rut" of doing the familiar

    3) It is a good thing to keep the art styles of separate IPs different, because, after all, they've done it before.

    RDragon,

Those are good points. I doubt that Blizzard, if they are even going to consider that petition, will care about the raw numbers on it. If I were them, I'd just divide everything by at least 4 and consider that the amount of people who actually "care" enough. Of course, the proportion of those who are really affected would have to be calculated out of the number of Diablo fans reading forums like this. It certainly seems more than 10-20% form what I've seen.

Look, if Blizzard absolutely has to lower the polygon count for the sake of gameplay, that's fine - I would just like to know the specific numbers behind it. Is it that currently only 20% of 5 year-or-better computers would be able to play the game? Or, is it more about the fact that they want to market to Asia with their computer performance that is way behind North America?

I wouldn't mind so much if they really thought to cater to the original fanbase, they had to skimp on the graphical style, but if they were trying to destroy the core feeling of the game so that a few thousand more Chinese WoW gold-farmers would buy copies, I would be pretty disappointed. I think it would clear alot of things up if they released the specifics behind these technical issues. They also mentioned that they went through at least 3 visual redesigns - why? Can the community look at them and judge for themselves?

The thing about this debates is that huge majority of those who like the art-direction are completely dumb and don't know the good arguments for their position from the bad.

This probably follows from the fact that most of the Internet is mind-numbingly stupid.

It's OK to disagree with the petition holders. It may be your personal choice to like them, and you can point out many different ways the new direction is unique and helps the game. It's great to do this using good, concrete examples.

The thing I want to point out here is that I start getting annoyed when it crosses the line from disagreements to just bad arguments.

Like arguing that the game is "just" pre-alpha. When the facts would show that Rob Pardo clearly stated they were looking more to create content that just to update the graphics engine.

Like flaming people for having a different opinion. Opinions are different, respect that shit, or just reveal yourself to be an uninteresting mouthbreather. Take time to understand where the other side is coming from. For example, as a supporter of changing the graphical style, I understand that Blizzard had to compromise for the most realistic graphics, for say gameplay. I UNDERSTAND WHERE THE OTHER SIDE IS COMING FROM, AND I RESPECT THAT.

But wankers on these forums like to circle-jerk by pretending they are "true fans" and Blizzard gives a crap about that status. No, they don't. They care about what sells more and personally, their artistic vision. All we are trying to do is appeal to that vision.

Of course there are plenty of dumbasses on my side as well (for example I don't agree with the "rainbow" critique). But since being against the art is a contrarian position, meaning UNPOPULAR, they are less likely to be completely out and out dumb than the mob flaming people for disagreeing with them.

Not the redheadedness, it's the fact that he is much more defined, I can actually see his muscles and frame now...the lines on his body look more like LINES, in the previous shot, like etchings, rather than physical muscles that were a part of him

Guys, please stop bitching about the graphics. The fucking Alpha testing hasnt even begun so much is going to change. Wait till the beta atleast to start complaining.

Yeah, if this idiot had an original thought in his brain, he'd realize that the art team actually has to create the rest of the content for the game, like loot, new environments, and bosses.

It'd be kinda great to let them have some feedback before that massive undertaking goes on, right?

    Stupid f****** flamer.
