Diablo III single-player has a lot of elements based on Diablo: The Sin War trilogy. However, all these books in Diablo Archive unquestionably have a lot of lore the game will use. Specially certain locations we will revisit. If you watch the WWI panel videos you will hear Blizzard say we will explore lands we have not seen before in Diablo II. That's because these lands are from the novels.
NPCs will be more talkative about their past. There's a chance we may see novel characters show up.
Do these (or one of these) books represent the same storyline as in the Diablo games? I want to have some books for my vacation, so I would like a reply to this.
Yes. An expanded version, with some characters and places that aren't mentioned in the games, but set in the same world as the games.
Does the collection of stories in this Archive go together well? What I mean is, if I read "The Kingdom of Shadow" after reading "Legacy of Blood" and "The Black Road", will these stories possibly relate back to the story before it? If they were to relate to books outside of the Archive, I'd feel kind of annoyed.
I haven't read any of the Diablo books except for the Diablo: The Sin War Trilogy. I did read 1/3 of the Black Road a few years ago when I picked it from the Public Library, but didn't finish reading as the deadline to return it caught up with me. Forgot to go back and get it again.
I will be reading them now once my copy arrives home in the next few days.
What I have heard is that the novels aren't an exact re-tale of the in-game ACTs. But more of a side-stories that happen between Diablo II and Lord of Destruction. The novels nevertheless are considered canon as of Chris Metzen and Blizzard. Basically Chris Metzen tells the authors the how the story starts and ends. Somewhat of a summary. Then the authors flesh it out. Each chapter is sent to Metzen and he asks to edit (add/remove) certain things. The author and Metzen work together in the development of a novel.
So, although the stories -- not all are from what happened exactly in the game, they are part of the diablo universe. And the importance about that is that Diablo III will contain elements from the novels, specially Diablo: The Sin War Trilogy which reveals the true origin of Sanctuary and what triggered the Sin War.
SPOILER ALERT
Angel Inarius was the commander of the Heavenly Hosts in the High Heavens. Tired of the eternal war against the Burning Hells, he went rogue and lured angels to side him in his quest. Inarius stole from Creation. Whatever this artifact or thing was -- he created the Worldstone with it.
Using the Worldstone Inarius created some kinda of new realm outside the boundaries of the High Heavens and the Burning Hells. This realm was undetected by either side. Cloaked so to speak.
Inarius created Sanctuary. He sorta talked with other demons who wanted to end the eternal war as well. So rogue angels and rogue demons united to form Sanctuary. Lilith -- daugther of Mephisto mated with Inarius -- Rathma was one of their offsprings. The Nephalem are the first of the offspring of angel and demon. Lilith deceived Inarius and planned to use the children against the High Heavens and Burning Hells as their matriarch.
She killed most or all of the rogue angels in Sanctuary. Inarius stopped her and thought to have killed her. Inarius altered the worldstone to depower the children (Nephalem). Throughout centuries the nephalem progeny became into normal humans.
Time later, Lilith returned under disguise and used a farmer named Uldyssian to trigger the Sin War. His powers as a edyrem (offsprings of the first nephalem) were awakened by her, and he in turn awakened other humans' powers. There was a confrontation between the edyrem, the Church of the Triune (Great Evils) and the Church of the Light (Inarius). The remaining of the story -- I will leave it to you to read.
Knaak hinted on 2006 -- during a public interview Q&A I organized -- the following:
Medievaldragon How much of the book is creation of yours, and how involved is Chris Metzen behind the canon storyline of Diablo: The Sin War Trilogy? Do you think the ramifications of this book impact in the storyline of Diablo 3 the game?

This is a pure collaboration between myself and Chris Metzen/Blizzard. All that is written is passed by him and the others there. This will be canon and has adjusted earlier info. The ramifications here will be used for any future project ... and I ain't writing for a dead game.

I bought the Diablo Archive yesterday and it has a been a great and interesting read so far. If you are interested in just learning more about Diablo lore and you want to read up then do so, but they (I've only read half of one book) are also a great read!
