Very politely, what the hell is going on with all those new threads that are been created all the time by bots and generaly fake accounts? It's very annoying to see them all the time at the front page when you are searching for the latest activity in actual threads!
captcha is useless. That's why. You need more than that.
Layers and layers of questions and anti-spambot questions will make people ragequit in process of registration. This is why only a solid forum software security solution can help here. I've been fighting bots for like 15 years already.

Interessting point from you. I think personally the reCaptcha Service from google is working pretty fine. In my mainjob i have to maintain different plattforms and we are pretty satisified with it. And if the bots don't cycle the registration through proxys and proxy networks, it is almost pretty easy to identify recurring ip adresses within the registration process and drop them if you operate on core or root base.
I had recaptcha on couple of my forums and bots still made like 20 accs every day. Sometimes 40.
Captcha is just a script, and for every script there's another script which decyphers it. So i gave up on this and just use third-party paid service and a plugin. And i disabled all captchas and 0 bots now. For a very small fee per year i have three headache-free forums
Well, maybe there are. I am not super professional programmer. Just administrated a tonn of forums/cms for years and used all kind of built-in spam-bot protections, capchas, recapchas, questions, quizes.. everything. Spambots became SO SMART nowadays, they avoid nearly everything and even pass 3D quizes. Hell, even a huge and, i believe, decently protected website like this one is INVADED daily.
I watched a friend register here on Dfans a few weeks ago and Captcha ran her through 5 or 6 screens of picking out rivers and storefronts, etc.. so I was impressed with the amount of hoops you have to jump through to register.
Some bot posting 16 pages worth of ads (that you couldn't buy anything from if you wanted to) feels a lot more like a denial of service attack rather than any genuine attempt to sell black magic spirit pandas or w/e they are advertising atm.
This would be a good time to check some security logs and see what else they have been up to... The raptors are testing the fences and it's time to beef up security in the park.

I believe you need to reconsider allowing new members immediate access to post new threads.
The current anti spam strategies are clearly not working.
The bots will just post in other threads first.
Seen this happen on many forums, suddenly you see old threads with bullshit answers (broken swedish usually in my case, straight from google translate probably). Few posts later and bot created its spam post.
But y captchas is kinda meh, they stop as many legit users as bots.

Well yes I'm a bit disappointed also. The promised money from the heritage i expected didn't arrive yet, i didn't gain any muscles, my penis didnt grow to elephant size and the black magic specialist didn't fix my love problems.
