We gotta make a change...
It's time for us as a people to start makin' some changes.
Let's change the way we eat, let's change the way we live
and let's change the way we treat each other.

Yeah, Columbus Day rubs the wrong way with lots of people. For many, it is a day symbolic of imperial yoke. I always enjoy hearing my professors talk about what a sham Columbus Day is. And seriously, like someone wouldn't have found America anyway.
The thing is, I'm not saying Columbus didn't (incidentally) discover America while sailing the world. But I am saying that people place too much importance in his historical role in the founding of America.
vikings discovered america in the year 1000, but they didnt land there, not till a few years later, and that was Lief Erikson, (son of Erik the Red).
Columbus came to america when? reneissance or something? thats what 500 years later?

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
Well maybe you guys celebrate Columbus Day in the US because Lief Erikson landed in Canada not the US so Columbus would have been (I think) the first man to sail to the US.

1492 I believe. I only remember that cause there's a movie called that that's about Columbus.

I think we celebrate it for similar reasons that we celebrate Thanksgiving Day: it's pointless and misguided fun.
Haha yeah if you study history outside of school you would discover that plenty of non-english people discovered the americas first. Columbus wasn't trying to find a new world like we are told, he wasn't the first person off his ship and he was also pretty pissed when he found out he wasn't where he was supposed to be. Also, he didn't even land on the mainland. He discovered Cuba. Columbus is a joke but it makes for a good story to tell our children so it never gets changed to tell what actually happened. Just like a lot of things we are taught in school aren't true. The civil war wasn't about slavery, it just kinda got thrown in there.
I had to stop myself from rambling on with all those(my dads a history teacher.. sorry haha)
civil war was about the two sides northern and the south, basically slavery began it, the economy of the south ( fiancial and agricultural wise ) was better than the north and sense the north believed in no slavery, the south would not be able to make their usual amount of profits. then 2 sides got mad about slavery, then beliefs were different, which meant physical violence, since even the government was fighting itself. Basically, i think slavery was the fire that lite up the fuel that was spread across the government. you get what im saying? o.O its metaphorically.
civil war not about slavery? what was it rele then?
It was about keeping the states together. Slavery wasn't really a big thing at the start. As the war progressed and the North seemed to be losing they didnt care about the south keeping the slaves. The Emancipation Proclamation was announced after Gettysburg, which was the turning point of the war for the North. And a good example of what I just said is that states who sided with the North were able to keep their slaves during the war, where those on the South's side who were defeated were made to set the slaves free.
But as for the topic (and I have no idea how you guys got to talking of the Civil War) Columbus was the first the first one to reach America that anyone knew about. The Vikings didn't put too much importance in it and therefore they did not talk to others about it, not to mention they liked to mislead any potential enemies. Columbus was the only known founder of America at that time, and for many years later. And as we found out that he was not the first to reach this landmass we just don't care anymore.
I really don't know why people make such a big deal about it, everyone knows the truth now. Who cares if we still have a holiday? Its a day more in the year that kids get a day off from school and we can get a day off.
Thanks guys for defending my point.. i wasn't around a comp for a while.
But yes the whole country didn't break into war just because people wanted to have slaves. There were many things that contributed to it and slavery was a very very small part of it.

I'm not sure if this is correct, but I thought they left North America via Bering thingy...or someone left.
Actually I'm not sure what happened with the Bering "thingy", but someone left or came.
