Well, guns were confirmed not to show up in D3, so thats the first thing.
Alright, I thought you were another one of the nerds who were crying "THERE ARE NO GUNS IN MEDIEVAL LANDS BLAAHH!" (because there are), but you actually brought up the best piece of evidence anyone could.

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
Did the term pirate even exist before the appearance of black powder?
Ya, they were called thieves!
Anyway, after i think about it a little bit more, a Pirate class could very well fit in as the unnanounced class. Ofcourse only with the right skills, lore and whole character image. Maybe even with a different name, but with some pirate-like elements.
I Like the idea of a character from the sea too, but the pirate doesn't seem to cut it for me. I'm suprised no one thought of the musqueteer yet, these guys can do pretty much anything and they have very elegant clothes. Anyway, as far as I'm concerned, the 5th class will be the pathfinder. I mean sniper teams in our present era are oftenly called pathfinders. They cleared paths and made recon missions a la rogue. What more do you need. MUCH better than a pirate to me ^_^!
The Battle of Ain Jalut in 1260 shows us that there were firearms in the Middle Ages, so just because you didn't see a gun in Bravehart doesn't mean that guns were not in the Middle Ages.
We know guns won't be in Diablo 3 (Though hopefully they will make an appearance in the expansion), but I just wanted to point that little bit of fact out to everyone here.
I dont see it fitting anywhere, and no bashing, I just personally hope to never see guns in the diablo universe. And as totally for the piirate outside of guns, I dont think it can really happen.. I mean he has what? A swashbuckler? FEW have been shown to use bows, but that leaves no actual bow skills. EXMP, zon types have bow skills from their anscestry, its what they did. What would a pirate have? Sword skills, a few buffs form life as a thief, and just the ability to use a bow? I dont think it can go far.

Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.
It would be kind of hard to explain the reason which made a pirate abandon his sea life and come fight monsters on land... Although the reason could be as simple as "The pirates heard about some bad things that happened and decided to help" or something...lol
I'm actually favoring a Pirate class now that I've had plenty of time to think about it, but I wouldn't want it until the expansion.
I'm pretty sure we won't be traveling to the Islands in Diablo III - but quite possibly they can use the expansion and explain that the corruption had spread farther South into the Amazon Islands and *bam* Pirate Class.. although I doubt we'd play as a pirate, but instead a Privateer.
We have to keep in mind we are playing a hero class.
Privateers and officially licensed by their government to inact in Piracy.
Since Westmarch has a Navy there you go.
Don't know if I like the gun idea.. so that would naturally have to go.
Especially since it's been Official there will be no guns in Diablo III.
Also the artwork for the Islands and that gloomy coast line are on the Diablo III site.

Watching 240 guys talk trash about cavaliers is like two retards having a slapfight over a sippy cup.
Seriously, I wanna impale people with a harpoon not throw little kitchen knifes at them! If they can throw giant axes i'll be happy, if not ...
still pirates or buccaneers are cool, but I really don't see how they can develop a story when your character is used to pillage and rape. People will just run away when you come for a conversation.
Edit: I can also remember seeing bows drop from monsters, maybe a sign that the next class is bound to use a bow as one of his weapons.

The arabs came into contact with gun powder between 1240-1280
The first Cannons were used around that time too as well as Bombards.

Privateers.

A Privateers were granted permission to become a pirate by their state to disrupte enemy trade. Far from a regular pirate.
This was mainly the case with Buccaneers, but more often they turned pirate - so that's why today the term Buccaneer is used to describe a Pirate in the Caribbean.

Right now I'm reading Stephen King's dark tower series, after that I'll be reading the Diablo books (finally found a store that sells them near where I live :D). I gotta say it's a good read.
Ahh yes, Ronald, right?
I enjoyed that series.
Regarding the Diablo books, I torrented them
Yes, I know, SHUN SHUN SHUN SHUN

Of course pirates would rather use throwing weapons (I'm thinking daggers here) than bows.
I dislike the idea that a character will throw weapons, how many daggers he will carry on him ? I just don't like that, I won't see someone always throw weapons repetitively ! it's just unreal !!
I would rather have bow than that.
And I don't expect what skills can be fit to a pirate ? Especially not a parrot plz ! lol
If the fifth class is a bow class, I expect that will be better than bow in d2. Normally to balance a slow attack it's need to be strong.
Well, Pirates were well known for the Bolas. So between swords, rudamentary hand cannons, bolas, throwing knives, and brass knuckles, they would be very useable. And considering they would have so many weapon types to choose from, the skills would only be limited by the imagination of the developers.
Reading a few posts, it seems there a bit more a pirate or Privateer could do, We have now swords, throwing weapons, some bows, I would think throwing potions aswell (poison, exploding ect) and skills to go along with the rest. Another problem I see now though is pirates are known for their speed and escape skills, and that seems too colse to the monlk for me, being based with alot of speed himself. I guess if they tried really really hard and completly abstained form guns, it could be a slim possibility in an expansion...

Pirates would be more using the enviroment against the enemy, whereas the Monk would be using his body against the enemy. Speed is important for anyone, especially the Wizard and Monk.
As for explaining firearms, I give up. *Sigh.*

I could always use another Pirate book.
Sounds interesting.
is it epic fantasy?

Hmm, sounds good to me.
Gonna check it out soon.
Heard somewhere that they were going to make a movie series out of it.
I would like to see that.
Of course, it would either be very long, or be multiple movies.
