The simple idea of having the 7 Diablo 2 characters as corrupted "boss" in D3, retaining the most important abilities they had in Diablo 2 to use against you, just has some appeal to me, no matter how much of a cliche it is.
How about the idea of fighting all 6(all but barb) corrupted at once?
Or fighting all 7 at once as fakes of some sort(golems made to mimic them, etc.)
I'm all for the idea of making it a post-game bonus quest.
Would be giving a nod to the players of D2, and could function like uber-trist did back in D2.

Whats all this about the paladin being undead? obviously the sorc has a better chance of being corrupted. I see the paladin leading the order of the Knights of Westmarch and you see him as an npc in D3. Worst case senario is he goes insane and corrupts the order from within and for the sorceress she is probabbly an insane magic based boss like the summoner of d1 or she probably died in the inital blast when the world stone was destroyed but hey we will see. As for the barbarian he looks like he may be playable in d3 because he looks older and the destruction of the world stone wiped out and displaced much of the barbarian population plus that woad washes right off

You do know they have confirmed that the Barbarian is a playable character in D3, right? Like, that was the first class they released.

I should have been alittle more clearer, I mean the barbarian from diablo 2 makes a another cameo as the playable character in diablo 3, if you mean that then that is great *crossing my fingers that they bring back the paladin too if thats the case*
The Barb from D2 is the same as the one of D3 if that's what you mean, and no they won't be bringing more D2 classes as for the Original game, maybe for an expansion.

Yeah, they have confirmed that the male Barbarian in D3 is the same Barbarian in D2 that you could play as. He was the one that killed Baal.
As for the Paladin, they have also confirmed that the D3 initial 5 characters will not repeat any more of the D2 7 classes. Expansion packs have a chance of including D2 classes though. It seems that the necromancer has a decent shot at coming back in an expansion pack, but that's only been suggested, not confirmed.
And what about the new players that don't have a char on the ol' D2 they won't be getting this quest, just simply make a quest with a random D2 hero (excluding the barb) at some point of the game.
I think we are waaaay off topic here.

I don't get why people think the Paladin will continue to fight like he did in Diablo 2. It's been 20 years, the rest of the Paladins have been corrupted or died, why would this one be special? Why would his little order be special?
Also, sense the Necromancer was found as the hero in D2 on an old old thread in this forum, one can only assume that if the Necromancer was to return, it would only be logical that A) he would be the main hero, or all the characters would be the heroes. If he did not, then it would be up for grabs on who the hero was.
Who said that main hero of D2 was the Barb? If to look at who destroyed the soulstones from the Epilogue vid than it looks (the hand armour) more like a Paladin.
I, personally, always thought that it was a team effort and all the heroes went to destroy evil.
Who destroyed the soulstone is not really the main hero, is just part of the video, is a team effort in the end, and I think the hero is the Barb, because he lost his roots(Mount Arreat) what he had to protect, he basically failed, he suffered, so in a way he's the main hero.

That would be like fighting the ancients would be a good challenge, but I think it'll ruin the storyline of the game.

Perhaps. It might be a nice postgame bonus quest though.

But first you say it was everyone and then you say it was the barb?
And can you explain this whole lost his roots? you got a link for that part of story, i think i'm missing something.
