Recently bought the Nook and decided to re read the Diablo books on it. Just got done and it led me to wonder, with there being two different authors, are all the books are canon? I would have to imagine that to be the case or else it would be an even thinner story than it already is in it's entirety. Awesome stories but lets face it, my love for all things Diablo may have me a bit bias, I don't see these books as ever being read by anyone that hasn't played the games. In terms of depth Sanctuary just isn't Middle Earth. So please someone tell me (with reference sited preferably) that it is all canon so I have a more complete world to drool over until beta.
How much of the book is creation of yours, and how involved is Chris Metzen behind the canon storyline of Diablo: The Sin War Trilogy? Do you think the ramifications of this book impact the storyline of Diablo 3 the game?
“This is a pure collaboration between myself and Chris Metzen/Blizzard. All that is written is passed by him and the others there. This will be canon and has adjusted earlier info. The ramifications here will be used for any future project … and I ain’t writing for a dead game. I am not writing for a dead world … but a world with dead. ‘nuff said!”– replied Knaak, Oct 2006.
While this technically only confirms that the Sin War is canon, Ureh (which was part of Kingdom of Shadow) was intended to be in D3 but was cut, and given that SC2 and WoW novels have changed their worlds as well, it would be a safe assumption that all the Diablo books are canon. I'm sure there's a quote out there somewhere to suppor it, but take my word for it if you don't want to find it yourself.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.

On top of the above information, all StarCraft and WarCraft books were confirmed by Chris Metzen himself to be 100% canon. Even to the point of overriding the games, if there is a conflict. It would be beyond odd if Diablo did not recieve the same.
Actually, due to a B.net update a few days ago, only the Sin War novels are considered canon to the point where they override the games. The other books are more or less tales, and their content should be taken with a grain of salt.

Whatever you heard has been made obsolete by this reply:

The Sin War trilogy was really the beginning of what is now considered canon for the lore of the series. While the previous books certainly have a lot of great stories, information, and even bits and pieces that may indeed hold true in the series as it is now, they aren't held as canon and thus the events in them may not always hold true moving forward.
True, he does mention later that the black road contains a more correct description of Sanctuary. But like I said, they are still not official in the same sense as the Sin War.

The Kingdom of Shadow might also be tied to lore in a more 'canon' way. After all Ureh was planned for D3 and there are still a few concept arts on the official site as well featuring a glimpse of the fortess in the cinematic trailer.
Bashiok doesn't say that the book are entirely made up, he's just saying they're not entirely accurate.
So Norrec Vizharan most certainly ran around in the desert with Bartuc's armor, The Black Road religion most certainly resurfaced at some point recently, and Zayl most likely went to Ureh.
But while the general implications and stories of the books are probably correct, the fine details of the books aren't necessarily, and whether they paint a correct picture of the angelic and demonic forces at work is a different cup of tea.
Of course, the quote also implies that the Sin War novels will not face any retconning due to the release of D3, while the other books might if they run into conflicts with the Sin War novels. For example, if the Sin War novels had somehow made it impossible for Astrogha to appear in Moon of the Spider, then that book would most certainly not be canon anymore.

The story can really puzzle you at times, for example the Sorcerer from D1 was thought to be possessed by the spirit of Horazon; in Legacy of Blood Horazon is alive and.... not well let's call it unstable. The time line here is really broken we know that Diablo met Xazax on his way to Lut Gholein, but the Sorcerer was possessed by Horazon quite some time before that. Or we can dismiss the whole 'possession' concept and speculate that Horazon had nothing to do with the Sorcerer, but there's no mention of an intruder in his Sanctuary in the book either.
In all fairness, the whole possession thing is just speculation. True, Drognan mentions it, but he's just speculating as well.
My memory of events in Legacy of Blood are a bit vague. I remember there is some sort of mage running around in the sanctuary who helps Norrec at one point, correct? Why does this fact exclude the possibility of an intruder being there as well?
