Im playing Thorns crusader this season and picked templar just as always ^^ thanks to this topic i remember that enchantress with atk Speed buff is much more useful in soloplay, Need a good blinding sand sword =)
I take templar with windfury/wyrdward/freeze deflection all the time. Specced with CDR, I get plenty of heals, plenty of extra CC and a mini tank I can hide behind to soak up solo boss projectiles. I use templar on all my characters.
I almost always use Templar, but honestly if I am playing WD, he is likely as not to have Int gear, because follower damage is irrelevant. In generaly I find the modest regen and sustain help to have more value than the CC and damage buffing you get from Enchantress and Scoundral.
It's kind of a shame that mostly they are all just coatracks for an Oculus, Ess of Johann, an undying relic, maybe a unity or some CC gear.
It would be cool if followers felt more impactful.
Agree it would be nice if followers felt like they helped out more- although they are much better than early D3 days.
For DH I use scoundrel for the range, knockback from lightning-rolled windforce and use control-impairing or damage skills. Oculus, wyrdward, and Ess/Overwhelming/Haunt just whatever I find. Scoundrel easy to gear on a DH and the knockback is amazing for those fast/flying elites.
For melee toons I use templar with lightning wep, oculus, wyrdward, whatever ammy (above), and freeze of deflection. All control-impair skills (intervene, intimidate, charge, inspire for resource regen).
Sometimes I will speedfarm with enchantress and use the follower token that gives her all the skills... just for fun.
I don't know about follower sets, but I always thought it weird that I can't give the followers armor pieces, especially something like a strongarms paired with an ess of johan.

Yeah, maybe I'm spoiled from D2, but it can be fun making a merc into an absolute beast that even can buff you with auras and things.
I generally set my follower up for the RG with the enchantress and blinding sand sword (38% blind) or Templar with Eun jang do (20% below life freeze), justice lantern and freeze of deflection (provided I'm not using unity). I always set up with max possible CDR and AS on any follower gear.
Hi. What follower do you use, and why?
i usally go for the enchantress because of the CC. But it depoents on your build if you need ressource generation then ou have to go for the templar.

If you purely consider survivability, isn't templar the best pick? He's got 2 charges and 2 heals. I don't know if the enchantress' CC is better.
