Oddly enough even though i'm a big fan of the ARPG genre this game didn't cut it for me to put my time into this and here's my reasons...
Childish design and graphics, the characters felt cartoonish and bulky like the characters off the movie "The Incredibles".
Loot was horrible when finding different loot that had nothing to do with my class, continuously.
Having to put points into stats that are worth nothing to my class to wear a piece of gear that was made for the class I played.
The skills felt bland, boring, and unskillful --- The skills trees were boring aswell and I just threw points in without thinking about it.
Pet AI was horrible - My pet got stuck alot and there was no way to call it back to me to help me fight.
Quests were boring and the storyline felt bland and didn't keep my attention long enough to read the whole story, so I just skipped through quest text and continued doing what I was told to do for the quests.
Overall the game didn't keep my attention long enough. I really hope I don't feel the same way about Diablo 3.
I'm happy I got the $3 deal that happened with steam because a extra $12 would of went to a waste.
You pretty much created a list of all the things I hated about that game. Except I used more four letter words and violent gestures when getting mad about it's terrible art style <_<
Torchlight is for the minigame/casual market. All the negative points you mentioned are true but when overlooking a game try to understand why the average rating for it was so high. For those looking for epic flow the addons help.

Agreed. I think the problem was that the "hardcore" (can I call them that?) gamers were looking for a game to fill the void between "good" games and stuck Torchlight in there because the reviews were decent. Eventually (not long), gamers realized that the game wasn't as polished as most games, it was annoyingly-cartoony in graphics (seeing as it was compared to the Diablo series), and had little deviation from a kill monsters - get gear - go deeper - kind of story line. (that worked for Diablo 1 ... but that was 15 years ago?)
I liked it merely for the distraction from wow for 1 month I admit. Then I shelved it and moved on.
+1 from me scottehs, I didn't hate the game, it just did_not_do_it_TM for me, same as deathspank; pets and bland items are a no-no.
I got a bad case of diablo and the medicine is not available !!!!
Thanks.
I'm glad alot of you agree honestly. I know this game is no Diablo but I'm going to put alot of pressure on Diablo 3 because i'm expecting exactly what they've been saying and a bit more which i'm pretty sure is in now but hasn't been revealed by Blizzard yet but either way I love the Diablo series and still play Diablo 2 til this day (on and off).
diablo is a lot better.. and every ARPG is compared to diablo
i would gladly play a diablo2 game with same skills, graphics and overall gameplay but jst new maps and quests.. its a game with clear flaws, but some many and huge good things

[b]Pet AI was horrible - My pet got stuck alot and there was no way to call it back to me to help me fight.
i rlly hated when my pet had health skill (scroll) that regenerated his health after cast but.. pet cated it even when he was on 100 % healt and i was getting annoyed with sound of that spell being casted over and over again every like 5-10 seconds...
OMG what's worse about this is his mana would drain for no reason. UGH, terrible design.
Tbh, i kind like TL's art direction. It's an cartoon steampunk, and i just love steampunk. It's also somewhat original - it's not mediaval, nor is sci-fi and it's not something in between. You may not like it, but it has very original, wich is allways good imo.
Torchlight itemisation is surely the WORST part of the game. Theres a ton of items with equal graphics but different name and/or stats, the req. seens to be generated randomly (worst idea EVER), majoiryt of the mods are useless, items doesn't have a good identity, they are all bland and boring. You better ignore the loot part of the game.
The problen with the skills is that some are just unpratical or does not scale properly. The extremely low variety is also a big problen. However the game have some really good features in that area - mainly the scroll spells. Imo this is a excelent idea to make anything possible. You can give firebolt to the destroyer and make a caster one, you can give dervish to a alchemist and make a melee alchemist, etc...Rly cool imo.
True. You just have to keep recasting then.
The greastest quality of torlight are the monster design. It's a lot better then any other game of the genre if you ask me, even D2. While D2 have a few memmorable monsters, 80% of what you face are just meatballs running in your direction. In TL every single monster have a special skill and that skill really matters! What kept me playing the game was that the combat is allways fresh because whenever you change map you have to face many different kinds of threat wich is really fun. I think people need to concentrate more on the combat andless in the character build part of the game, or else you will get really frustrated.
TL is far from an bad game, but also far from a good one. It just have a totally broken mechanic. However the core of the game, the gameplay, is really good. Had a lot of fun learning how to defeat the damn Dark Zealot and their finger of death spell hehe
Wow, I find this a very surprising thread. I loved torchlight. I think anyone who is disappointed is just expecting it to be something it never tried to be.
The art - I thought was great. The style stays the same from zone to zone, but the palette differs drastically, keeping it fresh. Compare to D2, where every Act has the same muted tones, which create a spooky ambiance, but also jade you to the difference between acts. D2 all felt the same. As for cartoony... yes, but with style. This was a much much smaller project than Diablo... it was created to be a game, not an epic, and for that I think the graphics are great.
The skills - I had great fun with two Destroyer builds. Besides the micro-managing buffs, each had a couple skills to use on mobs of enemies and another couple for big guys. The pace and scenery changes keep that fresh for quite some time. If it does get old to you, I think you're just looking for a bigger game. The Summoner Alchemist was also fun, and was a class heavily built on spells, as opposed to class skills, another well incorporated idea.
Mods - you can't blame the game for a lack of mods. The fact that they made it so easy, and even gave us a modding program speaks so much. Compare to D3...
Pet AI was horrible.
So, Torchlight could have been more, but for the scope of game they tried to make, it is perfect.
You pretty much created a list of all the things I hated about that game. Except I used more four letter words and violent gestures when getting mad about it's terrible art style <_<
Huh? The artists for the game are actually quite talented. Maybe you don't like the style used. But, don't call it terrible just because it isn't your taste. I'd like to see you do something that terrible.

It was good fun for the 5 bucks I spent on it.
A fun distraction. Not a high replay value - but you'll find that in other threads.
Buggy as heck, often crashes, high end items disenchanted, hierloom bugs that crash your character upon logon, pet constantly getting stuck, endless dungeon which was only semi-random, predictable monster spawns.
Fun and recommended for 20-40 hours of game time, but don't expect much more than that.

Monk > Wizard > Barbarian > Demon Hunter > Witch Doctor
