I've been reading about the variouis mods people have made for D2 but am hesitant to try and mess around with DL, installing, and playing one? So I was wondering if anyone here has played any or had any that they could recommend.

Eastern Sun is a very fun mod. Plus it doesn't change your core files and lets you play on Bnet. You access the mod through a different icon then the original game. You also access Bnet through the original game icon. (Yup, you can even use Bnet! Just not with the mod.)
Side note: It's harder then the original so be prepared to get your ass kicked a few times in Bloodmore...

I just started playing Eastern Sun. I love it so far.
Its harder to play, your intown stash is endless, backpack is huge, cube size is much bigger, all kinds of new items, new gems, new runes, runewords, gemwords, enemies, areas. Your mercs can now be totally equiped, boots, gloves, belt, rings and ammy. You can reset your skill points, if you dont like one arrangement you can "x" it out and redistribute the points. Lots of weird things to collect and use - I'm still trying to figure out what some of them are for. lol
I highly recommend it. I'm having a lot of fun with it.

It changes the skill trees. Changes what the skills do. Changes some of the maps. Adds new dungeons and bosses. Adds hundreds of set pieces alone. Adds 1 new unique per item type. Adds MANY new enemies. Removes the WP for the Jail and puts it in the Cow Level. (Yet to get to the cow level though, I assume it's still the tomb and all, just get the WP afterwards.)
To get a complete listing of everything, go to the site. Trust me, it is like another expansion!

Probably not. Just use the regular D2 icon to connect to bnet.
but if i kill a monster and he drops a "Eastern Sun" Item, then he can pick it up right?

I dont think so either, since apparently after the 1.10 patch they made the software for open source (much like WoW's UI controls, which can be modded endlessly and legally). I was just looking for some feedback on what mods people liked.
I've also heard plenty of good things about Eastern Sun. I've never played it myself, but a good friend of mine has, and he thoroughly enjoyed it. Like Stormcat said, there are also lots of items to collect and mess around with.
I've also heard some pretty nice things about Median 2008. Again, I've never played it myself, but from what I've heard, it adds new skills, runewords, and items to use. There are plenty of videos on YouTube showing what Median 2008 is capable of, and it might be worth looking into.
The last mod I actually played was Chaos Empire for 1.09 or 1.10 (I don't remember). It was okay as far as mods go; expanded areas, harder enemies, and an unlimited stash. I don't think the mod has been updated or supported since 1.10, though, so I would try a different one like Eastern Sun or Median 2008.
Also, here's a list of some mods that may also interest you.
And they changed how some of the armour looks on the character too.
Oh! And Magic Resistance!!!
And there's also gemwords and socketed gloves/belts/boots too! Plus there is a new gem type. "Blemished." Right between Flawless and Perfect.
so it will make you invincible in duels
(it works on closed bnet right?)

Can you install different mods at once? As an example; a mod that only changes the skills plus another one that changes the monsters, items etc..
Sometimes you can, sometimes you cannot. I depends on what the mod changes and how it works.
Eastern Sun, for example, inlcludes another mod called PlugY (that's the one providing the endless stash as well as redistributing skillpoints among other changes).
Most of the time though you cannot combine total conversion mods (like Eastern Sun and Median 2008) with other mod without getting lots of compatibility issues.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
I played Eastern Sun for the first time today.
Wow.
I don't know how it compares to other popular mods (this was the first time I tried one), but dang... it's intense.
Definitely can't run out the front gate and start kickin' butt; you get yours handed to you, with extreme prejudice, pretty darn quick. (Freakin' pack of trident-wielding dark spearwomen, led by a Unique, just as soon as I set foot on the Blood Moor...)
And then, once you get past the point when you can stop runnin' home to Mommy to get healed... every time you just start to gain a little confidence, it's like, "OMG! WTF?!" -- Swarm City, man. And these beasties ate their Wheaties (and had seconds) this mornin', boy!
Definitely a challenge. Took me over five hours (and two deaths) with a barbarian to make it to the Dark Wood, only to have my merc overwhelmed (again -- she bought it twice in the Underground Passage) and my butt chased back into the Underground Passage by a wall-to-wall sea of monsters. I surrendered for the day, at that point.
Wow I just started Eastern Sun as well. It was GREAT. I honestly just want a level99 so I can screw around with all these hot looking moves. I mean FLAME WAVE is back baby! HELL YEAH! And not to mention the ability to use Flame Inferno. Some of the encro skills look pretty good as well. I haven't checked anyother class though.
How do we play through TCP/IP? Because it'd be great fun if I could play with others on that game. ><'

No? Everyone gets better gear and better skills and whatnot. And the monsters get a huge boost as well. So no, your not invincible in duels.
And no, it doesn't work on closed bnet. It's a single player mod after all. (It does work via IP though. Me and stormy played a couple games.)
