In the current season, everyone (exept Angry Roleplayer) who is playing a wizard is playing the manald heal 4p vyr 6p tal rasha build. Most people use an obsidianring and some use (including me) a halo of arlyse with APD, but all these build are ranged build. The pro of ranged builds is the +60-70% from zeis the +30% from power hungry and the +60% from a perfectly rolled starfire. However, yesterday i read that the melee attack in archon mode has a 50% proc chance (the chance to proc paralysis) instad of the 25% from the laser. Therefore going melee might be better than ranged because the ranged build deals 100% base damage *1,6 starwand ×1,3 power hungy ×1,7 zeis *0,25 proc chance = 88,4% vs the melee 100% *1,5 trapped (im using zeis, gogok and stricken, so i swap to trapped) × 1,3 audacity ×0,5 proc chance (melee) =97,5%. We also have an open weapon slot. If we go for something like a pigsticker we deal even more damage than the ranged build. Let me hear what you think of the melee version and if you think it might be viable or if im totally wrong in my calculations.
Maybe it also depends on how well your defense is. Going the Melee route - you better be a tank! With a ranged attack, you can be outside the range of most attacks. I guess it can be situational too, if a big mob forms around you - use the melee attacks! I've never stuck strictly to one ability.
except angry roleplayer? haha, I can only talk for myself (I don't like the manald heal standard build) but I don't play anything usual and still am top50 solo in EU. So yeah... there are more than just 1 guy playing something different
The manald heal build I've tried and I think it's maybe even better to play with CoE instead of Obsidian, only problem is that you're then so dependant on Gogok and in 100+ grifts you probably need to use Stricken Gem. I would not recommend going for Halo since this eats into mobs immunities to crowd control.
Regarding the chance to proc paralysis, the Beam is better than the Melee Strike.
1) Paralysis doesn't take proc coefficients into account so just the lightning damage done counts
2) The Beam (ranged attack) in Archon form has a higher attack frequency (more lightning ticks) as most other skills, which is another reason to go range - more manald heal procs (beside the possibility to use Starfire and Zeis for much higher dmg potential)
Noob question - I know Vyrs gives Archon all runes, but (afaik) the damage type is defined by the rune choice. Most builds I've seen use the Fire rune to proc Tal Rasha meteors. Doesn't this make Archon deal fire damage, which means it doesn't proc paralysis?

No Vyrs makes your archon do damage based on your highest elemental type. Combustion still does fire to proc Tals but the rest of archon does lightning(if you have more lightning than anything else)
