I don't know why people make such a big deal about getting the name they want.
It's just a name.
Several letters on a screen won't ruin your gameplay experience if they aren't the right ones.
Because a name is just a few ways to really tell people who you are. I personally love having a name that fits me, I have been using a set of names since Diablo 1 and 2 that I hope to be able to use again. To some people its just a name, to others that name has meaning.
Just like in real life, some people name their kids different things. One parent may just say "Well, I'm gonna call my child (insert name) because I like the way it sounds." Another parent would say "I want to call my child (insert name) because it means (insert name's meaning)." Other will say "I want to name my child (insert name) because my name is (same name) and my dad's name was (same name)." To some its just a name. To some it has a meaning. To others, its a legacy.

Seriously though, they just had BETTER allow numbers after our names. I have no fucking clue why you couldn't on WoW and it bugged me. Without a number, half these shit kids can steal the names I have been using since I was 7. With number, I can add the number I usually always used with those names (79 obviously) and have the name I want, but with a number that identifies me from Morden12. I got so mad when I had to name my Death Knight M?rden because some shit kid rolled a character, named him Morden, and left him at level 12. I tried to convince myself that the umlauts made it look cooler, but ever time some assholes saw my name they would be like "Oh, I see you stole that name". It was pretty lame.
So at that I pray they don't change this to WoW and remove the numbers.
Numbers and odd special letters doesn't fit into a role playing game. You are supposed to figure some kind of name that fits to your characters biography. Like a Barbarian would have a barbaric name etc. Or you could perhaps make up your own story to your barb and figure that he was raised by Amazons and been given and amazon like name.
Anyways I liked how Warhammer had a randomize name feature.. if you couldn't figure out a name for your character or it was already in use.. you just randomized it and it really gave nice RP names for each race. I hope we get something like this to D3 because I always have hard time figuring out a proper name for my characters.

Very true man.
I actually think the same way as you... but it just seems a bit odd to be making such a big deal over the names.
I've also been using the same names for quite some time, so I get what you mean by the legacy.
But still, I just feel that it really isn't that big of a deal.
Sure, I'll be sad if I don't get my name, but I think that making it so the same name can appear multiple times is just an overall bad idea.
Not exactly a game breaking feature, true, but it would lead to confusion, and you can bet my ass that there would be countless Conan's, Obama's, and Xena's out there.

The ability to use numbers in your name has always been there in the Diablo series, ever since 1. Two of my friends in the Diablo 1 days had a small clan we called the Hells 7, very ripped off, be we were like 8 at the time. We each had a name of the prime evils, and tried to get 4 other people to join us with names of lesser evils. We each added the number 7 to the name. I was Baal7, and my local friend was Mephisto7. Diablo7 was a friend of his from out of town. Can't say we got many followers, but it was fun.
Personally, to me my number means as much to me as my names. Morden, being a conjugation of the german word for murder, has always been the first name of my vampiric alter ego. Algheri, the last name (not used in my forum name here) was the last name, and it was pretty much a mispell of Dante Alegheri's last name. My number 79 comes from two things, the original #7 from my Hells7 clan, and 9 being my lucky number. 79 almost means more to me than the name itself, and I would like to be able to use it after EVERY character name I make on Diablo 3, just as I did with Diablo 2. Diablo was never about some stupid RP name (like WoW did), it was about a personal user name to differentiate you from the next player. I really hope they keep it that way.
Also, as far as randomizers, they can be nice, but the biggest problem with them is once enough people have used the feature it starts to get pretty bad. I remember trying this on WoW and finding on one server that pretty much all the random names I liked were taken. Perhaps that randomization system just sucked, idk. Often you had to at least make some modification to that name to get it to work. If they did implement this, yet kept allowing numbers as well you could always just add a number to the end and be done with it. Too many times rerolling on WoW I found it took me longer to get a fucking name that was allowed and worked for me than it did to actually create my character image. Blizzard has already stated they want you to pick your class and pretty much jump into the game. By limiting your name to only letters, that would hurt this gameplay ability a lot, especially once the game has been out for a while.

Numbers/symbols are not entirely against roleplay. Remember the goblinshredders? Some of them in WoW had numbers in them. Same goes for Sacred 2 Temlpe Guardians. And then there's Morden's post. I don't like restrictions. Sometimes my roleplay may be outside of the typical convention...
The only type of restrictions I am for would be special characters such as !,@,#,$,%,_,... I think Blizzard should allow numbers, letters, and spaces for multiple words in a name.
I dont care as long as my acc name is DemonsTiny and my barbs name is DesmondTiny

I'm guessing its just the same old basic system, if someone already has the same name on the server then pick another one.
Thats how it should be. If you truly want a name then get the game when it first comes out and rush home and make it. What ima do is make all the cool names and acc's beofre everyone else

So you want me to know your account name when I search your player? What if I was then good enough to hack your account, give all your items to my characters, delete your characters, and replace them with a lvl 1 character named "QQLOOZERUGOTPWNEDQQ". Thats just more crap Blizz would have to worry about, especially if you were too dumb shit stupid to make a decently secure password. Sure, systems to prevent brute force or things like that could be put in place, but if there is a will, there is a way. Someone could do it. By not giving out account information of any type whatsoever and suggesting that players do the same inside the game, the game becomes a lot more secure. A person trying to hack someone's account would not be able to just know their account name off the bat. Without your account name, a hacker could probably somehow find any given account name and hack it, but not specifically target you for an attack. As Gandolf once said: "Keep it secret, keep it safe".
That being said, just KISS: Keep It Simple Stupid. Just keep the same D2 system, maybe step up the anti-profanity, and slap it on D3. There is no harm in that, it keeps it as simple as ever, and doesn't change the game in a way that could allow for easier griefing.

Can you play with a machine in Diablo? No..
You give a name to a person not a machine.. temple guardians yeah they have numbers but so what? The name is given by other people not themselves.. we don't know what their real name is. In Diablo we only know the real name of some super unique bosses like Andariel etc.. zombies are just zombies they don't have a real name just a name that the townfolks call them to distinguish them from another mosnters when talking.

Sorry but you cant put numbers to your name(only account) even in Diablo 2 so I guess we can't in 3 either.

Damn, your right. I swore you could use numbers. I know for a fact you could on Diablo 1. Thats pretty lame if you ask me. I guess I will just have to make sure I make a midnight purchase and get my name then. Blizzard got me again...

having the same name for 2 singleplayer chars would have the same problem as the databse. It would either pick up the wrong char... or ur game would have an error and windows would log it and blah blah blah.
There's an easy way to solve this- just give each character a unique number identifier in the database. The system will reference players by the unique identifier, and not character name, so there would be no glitch from that end.
Now for characters having separate names for relational reasons among players, I think every player should have a unique name. I can honestly see people taking advantage of something like this if it was implemented (allowing multiple people to have the same name) being exploited so you just see like twenty friends all with the same name. It would just be confusing and annoying to me. That's only my opinion, though.
It's definitely possible, but if it isn't implemented, Blizzard has other reasons besides technical ones for not doing it.

Then again, I think Warhammer did something like that, so it might not fly too well with mmo-haters.
