So, the barbarian is meant to be same one that was in D2 (and presumably defeated diablo). Now: How then can you justify starting a barb in D3 at Lvl 1 AND no items?! Not to mention him conveniently forgetting all his skills (guess that can be attributed to him slipping into senility over last 20 yrs...) . Just seeing a possible continuity flaw here...

"He was so deadly in fact, that his enemies would go blind through over-exposure to pure awesomeness!"
He got older and older and lost his moves and its all up to the player ( you ) to make him relearn his moves and new kik ass ones and own diablo and his bros!!
Anyway it's been 20 peaceful years after D2, he probably sold most of his equipment and lost most of his abilities due to training. Remember the Barbarians skills in D2 were all physically achieved as described by the manual, he probably fell out of shape and has to retrain.
I think it's safe to say that 20 years without need of protection from the evil forces, I think one would quite possibly forget; however, I doubt it.
I think this was one of the reasons that Blizzard North originally pitched the idea of all new classes, zero returning. Though, one can assume that the Barbarian was in his late teens, early 20's in D2. He is now in his 40's. Think of this like Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Indy's got gray hair and he still kicks ass.
If I was a crazy barbarian that killed the devil and thousands of waves of evil monsters. I wouldn't let 20 years take away my skills. I'd find new shit to kill and keep myself at top shape.
The barbarian started to weed then crack and then meth, so he now lost all his moves and is need of help with his drug problems, also his wife left him.
This is similar to saying why in many shooting games we are able to withstand 100 shots before we die, or how we are able to heal immediately with health packs.
These things are just there, and is not made realistic. Realistic = Not very fun.
Should one consider the original skills of the Barbarian, one finds Whirlwind to be one of his highest achievements. The skill had a level requirement of 30. Further training served only to expand the skills destructive effect. One did not observe the character becoming a monstrous Hurricane incarnate at level 99. Should one then observe the Barbarian in his older form, what does one find? One finds the character to have this same Whirlwind skill, with the inclusion of other skills, acquired seemingly with a certain amount of ease.
Thus, one concludes that the Barbarian did not lose much of his abilities. Instead he has built upon his existing skills and will now attempt to surpass them with the latest installment in the franchise, which one finds akin to surpassing level 99. Perhaps now, with a great deal of experience under his horned belt, the Barbarian may finally become a Hurricane incarnate.

And he leaves all of his previous loot behind. One must assume, of course.
With peace settling in the realm of Sanctuary following the previous battle, average citizens from various cities and towns would find no trouble with the procurement of gold coins. Within two decades one may not find it to be a stretch to consider the effects of inflationary pressures on various economies from such circumstance. The Barbarian would thus find himself pawning off his pension fund for but a daily staple of stale bread and pieces of protein-rich meat.
Yeah doesnt really bother me either - jus let me kill mobs diablo-style and i'm happy XD.just thought that with Bliz saything they really want the user to 'feel the continuation of the storyline' and immerse ourselves in the lore..this'd feel bit out of place & would b interesting 2 c how/if they'll deal with it.
imo, the dude sold his god-like gear for money to engage in wild drinking binges & orgies - hence reducing his strength&vitality to base - then took up childhood dream of ballroom dancing so forgot all his other skills...so has to re-learn things like jumping all over again...
As Rocky6 was for stallone~ D3 will be the ultimate comeback story for the barb XD

I wasn't aware. I am not sure how the female version will fit in, but whatever. Another reason why female/male is bad for the story.
It is the SAME barbarian...

It's okay seems a lot of people aren't aware for some reason.
I'm sure the female will tie in to the story just as well.
