counter wouldnt be very useful in HC you are right but, it would be funny if they announced to all of bnet when someone dies for the 10,000th time to diablo
I like the idea of the kill counter but only if it had a purpose, like learning more about them, etc. I wouldn't want some huge graphic on my screen as I kill this monsters with a lame accomplishment that looks like splattered blood like "Killing Spree", "Blood Bath".

I think if they had it, it would kinda be a separate tab (like your inventory is one, stats, skill pts, kill counter could be another one)
Very good idea indeed. Maybe after killing x amount of a certain type of monster, you get a damage bonus. Would have to be something small to prevent exploitation, and there would also have to be a cap. Maybe something like an extra 1% damage for every 10,000 kills, capped at 5-10%.
Could be rewarding, and very strategic. Could even make it so that you have to damage the target in order for the kill to count to try and curb some of the power leveling techniques that might come along with a system like this.
In an old MUD, we had implemented a very similar thing. The best balancing issue is to decrease experience gained per kill to counter the amount of extra damage and/or defense you have against such monsters (the reasoning is, the more you know about something, the less knowledge you can acquire about them).
I think it would work that way very efficienctly, and as long as they create enough (1) varying monster types and (2) large swarms of beasts, the experience hit won't be noticeable enough to be a serious problem.
I propose an exception to this counter, however: Bosses. It would be far too exploitable, regardless of any arguments on either side of the fence.

Yeah, but the applications for the monster kill counters and any bonuses derived from them would be a boon in hardcore. Of course, hardcore is completely irrelevant if they don't first find a way to abolish TPPK-style instant-kill hack programs once and for all.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.

Which I am ok with, I was just stating what I wouldn't want to see.

I love seeing stats of what I've achieved. Anything. Time played, mouse clicks, spells cast, melee hits, players killed, deaths, monsters killed etc. It's just interesting to see how much you've done.
I too like seeing all of these interesting facts, looking back and realizing how much time you have "wasted" playing this game.

That could be an interesting way to discourage players from running a certain Boss or area for experience, like baal runs now, or even for MF reasons. Considering the more you fight a particular monster the more you know which means you can not gain as much exp in that area as another which discourages baal runs. They could also make it so the more you kill a certain enemy the MF reduces a certain percent, obviously being capped as you are bound to eventually kill all the enemies multiple times just by playing the game.
I used to play a MMO where it had a kill count (kc) and after 50kills you would get a gamble thing... that never did help alot but sometimes it did. It would be cool to see a reward after a X amount of kills are awards for killing X amount of zombies as others have said.
I thought I heard somewhere that they'd like to implement achievements of sort like kill X zombies, etc.
It would go well with also including a type of character sheet (or card if you like that sort of thing) that could be seen by others who examine you or you could hand off as a sort of buddy list as well. Not sure if it would take a lot of work on blizz's part but it would be nice to have such a sheet like in the past GTA games; for example miles walked, zombies killed, time spent airborne, enemies decapitated, etc.
Included would be also deaths (SC) as a prominent stat to make it more socially respected to have died as few times as possible. Kills vs death ratio like FPS! heh
I really really hope someone in Blizz is thinking the same way I am about the kill counter. Seems like most people agree that it could be a great addition to the game if done right.
Plus I like a title to be added after killing number of mobs type.
Let it be toggle on/off.
Titles are the only good ideas that came from Fable, Chicken chaser
So I just thought of an idea that I think would be really cool to have in Diablo 3. What do you guys think of having a kill counter build into the game?
Maybe give it the ability to show total monster kills, player kills. And then break down the monster kills into certain types. Like, "You have slewn 458 zombies"
I think it would be really fun to get a high level character and be able to look back and reflect on all the baddies you've slewn on your way up.
i say no to that... im not sure why but i just think that it would have a bad affect on the game
Sounds like an addon I have on my WoW character that counts how many times I jump. Last time I checked, I was about to push past the 1 million jump mark since the release of the expansion.
That's a lot of spacebar pushes...

As for a death counter, I'd rather not. I don't want to know how many times I've failed
Which I am ok with, I was just stating what I wouldn't want to see.

I very much hope they implant it.
Sentence of the year:
"WoW, It's like a disease"
and, other statistics are also nice, like how many times you died etc.
