One of the problems with D2 was that bosses were designed to be soloed by any class. This made them less interesting and more of a chore to kill. I've read people who've said that in D3 bosses (like Lesser and Prime Evils) should not be able to be soloed. However, this makes creates a challenge for single player, uh, players.
The devs have said that they develop singeplayer at the same time as co-op, that they're really the same thing.
Here's what I think is the solution: in single player, you should be able to make mercs that are exactly like other people, eg, you should be able to hire Witch Doctors and Barbarians, and equip them with your own loot. You should be able to give them commands and macromanage them if you want, but they should also have good AI, for people who don't like macro. This way bosses, like DIABLO, could not be beaten by a single hero... but still be beaten in single player.

Ranger - Ranged Weapon Mastery (fire a bow or javelins like a machine gun!), Traps (MK style!), Pets (lions, tigers, and bears oh my!) - physical damage based
Demonologist - Bone Spells (Necro style!), Avatar (shapeshift into a demon!), Furies (evil spirits that hang around you, giving party bonuses) - mix of physical damage and magic

I think the way it works is the same as D2. The more people in the game the harder the boss is. Of course, they've probably come up with a better way than just adding HP ( I'm pretty sure that's how it is in d2).
Diablo is a game meant basically for single player, multiplayer is more of a coop and doesn't have anything to do with MMOs. I expect the bosses to be a lot more challengeful than in D2. I like the idea that you have to dodge their attacks and wait for the proper moment to attack them. This way, not only your gear will make the difference while making the game more fun.
I'd also like the idea of more customized mercs, both in term of gear and AI.
I agree about what has been said about boss difficulty -- if they make them un-soloable the game starts to feel way too much like an MMO. I'm sure there are innovative ways to make them a challenge in groups and still soloable when faced 1v1 that goes beyond adding HP, as has been said.
I'm not sure about Mercs -- if we make them too involved and customizable then every class suddenly has a 'pet class' addition that I just don't see being that interesting. I like the perspective of D2, where you could give them some equipment, tweak them a bit but not so much you really had to get invested in it.
Well, maybe not make the mercs completely customizable, but make them able to carry out the roles that people playing classes can carry out
