I don't think the free set was such a good idea. I had the firebird set, which is not really that good compared to others, so i can only imagine how it would be with one of the more powerful ones. On the long term, not having the set would have delayed the whole progression by a few hours only, out of the many hours i spent.
I don't know if I was an edge case, but I played season 3 and it took me almost the whole season to get a complete set. Headrig's Gift was a great addition because it made me feel like I was advancing through my efforts instead of hitting a RNG ceiling. Now, getting a 6 piece set might be a bit overkill, but they could modify it some. What gift 1 = head/hands, gift 2 = feel/legs, gift 3 = a low drop rate weapon or off-hand that works for that set. I will still have to work for those last two pieces but that will also help in making me feel more powerful.
Bah maybe I am just that guy but I hate when people get all, even casual's will finish the season journey in 2 weeks. I haven't, and I play what I consider to be true casual. I play for a while most nights but not every night. I hit P350 last night and I actually am having fun this season feeling like sure there are people at 800 or 1000+ but this time i really could compete if I wanted to. On top of that I feel like I can finally see more of the game since before this season I was never even able to do T10. Now I can actually get 25 and Higher on gems, now i am seeing way more legendaries some of which I never even knew existed. I may be the minority on the forums but I think this was a great step.

I believe getting something 4 free is straight no.
While i agree that games need to be casual nowadays, this season was a complete overkill when it comes to items. I started playing Diablo again, after like 2 years and had to laugh cynically quite a few times because everything just gets thrown into my face with little to no effort. The only stuff i really had to farm was deaths breath.
Idk if i'm just old fashioned or something, but imho games like D3 are meant to be a bit hard, so you feel some progression from time to time.
The way of progressing in Diablo 3 feels absolutely wrong to me as a rather oldschoolish player. I started as a DH and completed all of his sets in like 4 days of playing casually. Any of those sets would instantly enable me to do T10 with ease. Then i farmed for better gems, gear and was able to do GR60 in like ~10 days since i started playing again. That was the point i asked myself why i even need to progress further since i really dont see an appeal about being able to do higher grifts.
After my DH was finished i tried some other "builds" and realized (yet again): "Oh. bliz wants you to use either sets or LoN."
For me, there'd be lots of things to do to make the game more appealing in the long run.
So, yes, progression is way too fast.
I would say that the process for the gifts does make you earn it. It's not like you login and receive the set. However, they might be able to raise the difficulty a little on those.
S1: 320 hours, 137h most played character (4 chars, SC&HC), Paragon: 507 (156 HC)
S2: 66 hours, 42h most played char (2 chars, SC only), Paragon: 363
S3: 45 hours, 38h most played char (2 chars, SC only), Paragon: 335
S4: 170 hours, 82h most played char (4 chars, SC only), Paragon: 682
S5: 165 hours, 138h most played char (3 chars, SC only), Paragon: 841
What does that mean? S1 was new and exciting and back then D3 was the only game I played. I started in HC, but then switched to SC (because I wanted to push grifts to the extreme). The most played character is more like a most played class, because I played that class in HC and SC. So the real time is somewhere between 30-70% per mode. In S2 and S3 my playtime dropped drastically. I basically just played to 70, got my set, pushed a bit grifts and got bored. S4 brought the season journey, which increased my playtime, but I did not play one character for very long. In S5 I am at almost the same playtime with fewer classes. My most played class has the highest played time ever and I'm far from finished.
Paragon numbers are way higher now, but that doesn't mean that you're done earlier. The game has more to offer in the lategame than ever before. But if you don't care about the lategame and just play it the way I played S2/S3, you won't have this long progression. For me, the game was never over when I reached a certain Plvl or a certain GRift. The game was over, when I reached a moment where my equip didn't change anymore for a long period of time. The moment I stopped upgrading my equip has always been the moment I either stopped playing or made another class. And I always reached this moment after max 100 hours. This season, I haven't reached it yet. My other 2 classes were only made for two reasons. The wizard for the season journey and the barb for a chance to get Lidless from Kadala for my Crusader. I haven't really played them yet, though.
The game has more content than ever. Progression is longer than ever. At least for me.
I have been waiting to comment on this topic due to trying to explain things, but you basically did what I wanted.
This season has also been the best for me.There is more to do in the sense of classes. All classes are fun to play compared to previous seasons. My "main" this season is Wizard and I have yet to fully gear it.I have 4 items that are not ancient yet.I am 912 paragon and have reached GR77 so far.
What I do when I hit a wall with one class,I will jump to another and repeat. It Keeps me from burning out since each class is not the same.Granted I have my favorites and least, but I still give each a chance to progress at my own pace.
Personally I feel I will not have enough time in season to actually complete all that I want if seasons are only 3 months long now.

You people whine if they don't give you anything and cry if they do, there is no middle ground for keeping everyone happy get over it.
