a couple months ago, about two or three, i got a virus. and no matter what i did i couldnt make it leave, and none of the fixes online worked for me. so i reinstalled my computer. that was the first time in YEARS that i had to reinstall this comp. now i got another more sophisticated malicious software that i cant shake, so im in the process as i write this of backing up all my videos and stuff i want to keep into my mp3 player, which can carry 16 gigs of non-media, and 16 other gigs of my videos and stuff to view as i use it (partitioned drives)
now, i think we all agree that reinstalling is a pain in the ass. but it does bring benefits. the reason for this thread, is for discussion about whether the pains of doing it are worth it, or if the goods outweigh the bad. i have 40 gigs in my hard drive, and like to keep at least 15 gigs free. the rest is usually taken up by installations or videos, i do a bit of editing and movie viewing for my upcoming video ideas and stuff.
in all, this will help me by forcefully making me abandon what i really dont need, but could come in handy every once in a while. the only things i plan to install after this debacle is WoW (to play with Thasador) and the photo editing program, for future projects with my sig or avatar. however, i know that if i didnt have to, i wouldnt do it. even if it did allow my computer to run alot faster and smoother. i have 6 gigs of LoTR extended versions uploading onto my mp3 player, i just know i wouldnt do that if i didnt have to.
who else has had to reinstall, for whatever reason, and found the positives outweighing the negatives? im going to do what i have to do, but it still sucks.
My computer used to always get turned off the wrong way so the harddrive or some shit would always crash. My friend would always have to come over to help me reformat and whatever. It makes the computer run a lot faster it seems. But idk, seems like you have a lot of stuff to lose when u reformat. I can't offer much advice(i'm a noob when it comes to computers and what not).
i dont need advice, im just curious about if people here do it on the regular for better performance.
Most people De-frag drives for better performance on a regular basis. You should only Reformat (Reformat is the correct term not reinstall), in your case, when you lack the proper skills to take care of "Sophisticated Malware". While it certainly will make your computer run better than it does now, it just is a pain in the ass to reinstall all of your software you once had on it.
Also what's the "Sophisticated Malicious Software" you're dealing with?
I like reinstalling / reformatting the harddrive because when i used windows, my files were very unorganized.. so i like to start fresh every once in a while and try to make it faster and easier to get to files ( i have 250 gigs so a lot of the stuff gets lost XD )
I have to say that I'm very organazied, I have two HD's:
First: (Softwares, Editors, Compilers and libraries).
Second: (Games, Movies, Series, Joost, anything that is for Entertainment).
I keep a Folder in the Desktop with all the Installers and everytime I Download&Install something I add to a list file. Very simple way to organize.
Oh yes, I also like to organize the shortcuts such as SHIFT+F1~F10.

ugg, i hate reformatting, backing up my 60 gigs of music/video...not fun......takes along time...
having to get all security updates and plugins...
though most of it is getting something goin and walking away for hours on end..
anyways reformatting for me has always been a last ditch effort and i hate doing it...
But it is always a blast booting her up again for the first time and watching the blazing dual core processors open things befor i can even finish double clicking..lol
