At gamescom, Blizzard has finally revealed their plans for end game in Diablo III. Called Inferno, we first got a hint about this in the beta interview where it was said that players would have more difficulties to face in the "Hell and Inferno" difficulties. While at the time we did not know exactly what inferno was, we do now.
Inferno will be a fourth and even harder difficulty that unlocks after beating the game through the Hell difficulty and getting your character to level 60. Designed as an end game objective for players, monsters faced in this difficulty will all be at least level 61. Designed with more HP, damage, resistances, and more aggressive AI, the monsters pose to face players with the most difficult challenge of the game. Along with this, some monsters and bosses will even have extra skills at their disposal that you will only see in Inferno.
The objective of the Inferno difficulty is to give players something to do once capped but would avoid running the same bosses over and over again like the Baal runs of Diablo II. The entire game will plateau in this difficulty meaning that there will be no one particular place that would be best to farm for items. Blizzard is hoping that this will give the players an incentive to repeat the entire content of the game while looking for the best items and not just one section repeatedly. Even if players find a particular area that maximizes results for their efforts, Blizzard said they will add incentives to run through the entire content.

The idea was that we wanted a difficulty mode where the entire game was viable. So you don't have to pick and choose key areas [to replay].
We do expect there to be a certain amount of... runs to get items, but we wanted players to do it over a lot more content. We're trying to make sure that there's a lot more opportunities for players to see a lot more variety.
Now for the incentive to put yourself through this challenge of Inferno. Blizzard has said that only the best of the best gear will drop in Inferno. Both statistically and visually, if players want to find the best gear for their characters, they will have to make their way through Inferno multiple times. Along with armor and weapons, other high-end items like top ranked runestones will only drop in Inferno.
With end game finally revealed, and Beta beginning in a "little while" what else could gamescom hold in store for Diablo III. Stay tuned on Saturday when Diablo's two performances and interview are being held for some more possible news.

It turns out that Diablo, himself (herself?) did indeed open the gates of Hell at Rudlofplatz on the 16th.

This is exactly what most people, or so it seemed, suspected Inferno would be like. And I think it's definitely a good change. Not only will the entire game, as Wilson said, be more viable once you reach lvl 60, but here's to hoping that it will be hard as well
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.

I got to Hell difficulty for the first time today, and I was wondering... Is this the end? I hope not! (don't get me wrong it is hard as is)
I always wondered why there were all these special pandemonium and uber bosses in D2. (never got there though)
Great news to hear! It is also good that they are making all areas of equal level once your reach that inferno difficulty, it should be more fun that way.

I'm going to take this time to say I called it a long time ago that there was going to be a new difficulty level after hell for end game. (yes before inferno was ever mentioned)
Awesome, glad that they are putting something sizable for end game content...I always felt D2 was lacking in that area. Great idea to have those items specific to Inferno only; except that people can just buy them off the AH, though I imagine they are going to be ultra rare.
I love all loot fest kind of game! I will be playing all of them for the next few years. Loot fest games I'm looking forward to: LotR: War in the North,Torchlight 2,Borderlands 2 and of course Diablo 3.

This is amazing news!
First, that the whole "inferno" slip wasn't just a miss type (didn't really think it was any way)
And second, having a super crazy insnane difficulty level is just what the doctor ordered IMO.
This does raise some interesting questions though. Like, if the difficulty is "flat" through out Inferno, but you get better (the best?) items in inferno, wouldn't it stand to reason that by the end of inferno you would be deystroying everything again? Because you have upgrades?
I mean, of course, you want to feel powerfull with your new items, but to me the conundrum of a 4th (flat) difficulty has always been "how to keep it flat, but still give rewards?"
Any way, I am super excited and I'm sure these questions will be answered in time! (even if its not till release)

Commander. With all due respect, get a couple Klingon chips, flux tubes, and Dilithium converters and this won't happen again.

When I get out of work, I need to remember to find my post on a VERY similar idea I had to Inferno on the d3 forums ages ago.
They mentioned nicer drops, but I wonder if that is still going to follow the linear progression of stats we will expect from lvl 1-60 or if indeed it has to be accelerated to compensate for the lack of new skills after max level.
Mm. Not sure what you're trying to say, but I think any loot that act 4 boss drops in Inferno will have a chance to drop off of say, a fallen, in act 1 Inferno. Bosses will likely drop more, or have an inherent "magic find bonus" but I think the range of loot will be the same for basically all mobs throughout Inferno.
