will i think that diablo 3 should not be either too colorful and cartoony or too dark and gritty
which mean it should be somthing in between
as said before there were both good and bad pictures edited by fans
so i think blizzard should pick the good ones and discard the other ones
i think we all showed them the extreme cases of the graphic portion of the game
so at blizzard it is thier work to figure somthing from all of this to please alot of fans and not to stick to one of the extreme (and just throw lame excuses and clueless talk)
this of course to the graphic part but for the GAME MECHANICS it is another story
Look again at the scene where he first wears the armour parts and also where he speaks with Cain. Its best to have the high-res trailer.
And when did I talk about the darkness?
(Posts sent in another thread 100 posts ago dont count.)
Who ever told you that was a good debate strategy? "Prove me wrong, but you can't use the evidence related to the topic." That really bothers me. You're basically telling me I can't hold you accountable for your statements. That's bullshit.
Also, I don't like your reasoning for signing the petition. If it doesn't match your cause, then why support it? You're basically siding with something you don't agree with, for the sake that Blizzard might ignore the main point of the petition to recognize your personal opinion. It just doesn't work that way.
By the way, I always view my game trailers in high resolution because I'm a boss like that. By that, I mean the HD version on GameTrailers.com.
Viewing it again only reaffirms what I am saying. The barbarian is jacked. I see no reason to deny him the big armor. If he can carry it and it offers him the superior protection, who are you to judge? This isn't America's Next Top Model. This is meathead versus Satan. I see no reason to compromise his badassery in the name of fashion.
I'm not resting my coat on my alterations, those are just quick changes to get a point across. Lots of deep violet's in my images yes, Is it my vision for Diablo? For spending all of 10 minutes on them, I suppose so. Certainly better in concept than green glowing light engulfed room in the video. The point was to show the original was waaaaaaaay too bright.
Yup right you are, it only concept. Most of it was me throwing a dark violet to black gradient color over the images and adding a radius light in about 10 minutes per pic (the best one can expect from me on a Sunday morning sucking down a cup of joe LOL!). I know my images wouldn't be a final product by a long stretch. It's just to show Blizzard can go quite a bit darker and not loose anything.
I really hope D3 doesn't disappoint, maybe if they can show the darker elements in the next game play video or when the announce the other classes they will see the flack drop.
Coming from the main person defending their approach, Jay is feeding the people tripe by the buckets. I've worked with 3D applications such as Maya and Studio Max, they are more flexible than that. He needs to stop treating fans like we all graduated from bovine university.
I like how you brought up Doppelganger's photoshop up. I remember I blasted it for being too gray. It's in some of my earlier posts that I'm too lazy to dig up for you because once I do, you'll scramble off to another photo and claim superiority.
And the video doesn't bring any of the photoshopped pictures to life other than to make it completely saturated and emphasize loss of colour.
I don't want to rehash my arguements about his picture because it would just lead to a neverending circle. If you want to know my opinions you can search up my posts about it. In fact you can search up everything I've posted in relation to gray and mundane pictures. Even if you do look up my posts, I doubt you would actually spin off some decent arguments that are more than 'if they add...' or 'what if...' etc. Too many if's and not a lot of doctored photographs that prove it.
Yeah.. you can go look up my arguments in previous threads. I don't want to copy/paste my arguments into every artistic direction thread. Plus your picture is boring. It's ordinary. It's bland. There's one palette scheme and thats gray. That's monotonous. I don't think you have what it takes to give a picture an essense. No one said the colours had to change into neon pink. There is more, but those are in my earlier posts about your picture. You can dig it up if you want.
There are three arguments on your end.
1) Exaggerated neon green
2) Light radius
3) It's not up to my level of 'satisfaction'
If you are bested at any argument, these 3 topics will emerge. And by the way, what constitutes as 'satisfying' in your terms? When the game is built in your preference with standards that matches your every belief? I also like your approach to the neon colours. 'How in the fuck is that exciting?' Well, how is it exciting if everything is gray? I sure wouldn't like playing a character that was gray, all the monsters are gray, the walls are gray, the skies are gray and the only difference in colour was a very dim candle.
I agree. I think they went overboard with the green and blue tints.
Its one thing to have fantasy-based color schemes.
Its another to look like you might actually be swimming threw what you are walking around in.
As for them talking about how they are not changing how the art style is or the colors in the gameplay trailer... that entire thing was made just for a presentation right? I distinctly remember them saying that they made that trailer just to show off what they had so far(different article, or coulda been bashiok I dont remember). So them saying their not changing anything of the colors or the art style makes no logical sense if what they showed us is not even going to be in the game... it does not even make logical sense on behalf of their part to even say such statements about how they wont change their style or art and how its "no going back now" unless the entire game really is tinted in a green/blue haze. That fact right there worries me.

If you get personally attacked by letters through the internet its a good thing to always have a box of tissues and a band-aid around.
Source where I said in Diablo every character, wall, monster, item, spell was gray? And source where I said the "neon green" is okay whereas the pink is not. And yeah, I have played Diablo. You can find me on bnet as my username.
No, the first quote was in accordance with your shopped picture where everything was gray. As for the second one, it was already green. Now if you were to bring into D1/2 into this, then yes they did add the green. However since it is a new game, the green was already present.
Yeah the green was present all along. Show me a screenshot from Blizzard of the dungeon where the green glow was not present. You can't.
edit: As for your colour argument, have you seen that I've never said the green particularly the right choice. What photoshop amateurs are doing is taking out the colours and replacing with nothing. That's all they've shown. At any time they prove they can create something that justifiably puts an emphasis on the mood and imagery without extracting colour and injecting nothing, that would be fine with me.
So you believe that one decision, like for example fucking the dungeon up with sourceless green light, or using a bulky out of place item design, or the overall use of light, does not have a single effect on the complete game?
I like this question as it makes no point and is unanswerable. It is a fall back method in which you are acting as if your personal tastes are better than what Blizzard has designed. This kind of question gets us nowhere.
Anyways, i can't believe how you are able to argue that green is less monotone then grey, the funny thing is, its not, not even a complete grey square is as monotone as a complete green square.
Firstly, he's saying that green lighting is less monotone than a gray level minus the lighting. And that is true. Secondly he's using the word "monotonous" to imply it's meaning of being boring, dull, and repetitive. You went off on what monotone in colors mean to you and missed the point completely. A gray level, as designed by Blizzard was boring to play though multiple times. They tried it and they didn't like how repetitive it became to play through.
Secondly, monotone means that something is of a single color. So a level with green lighting and bluish grays and orange candles will seem less monotone than a dark level filled with gray. We aren't talking about solid squares here - we're talking about a vibrant level with all kinds of lighting and colors. Gray gets boring quickly, while eerie green lighting implies sickness and evil to the viewer.
Also, why is neon green "ok", but neon pink not? Let me get this completely doctored out, if it was neon pink (i can change the neon green in a similar intensity neon pink if you want?) then it wouldn't have been ok, green is a-ok though?
This question is interesting in that it seems to want to guide the person being asked into a single conclusion. It's like asking "If eating fish is ok then why not eat hump back whales? I mean - why not? You eat fish! You should be ok with eating the whales!!!" It makes no sense and there is no way the level Blizzard showed us was the same thing as looking at a neon pink level. Why is green lighting ok and pink isn't? Because they both do very different things to the look and feel and mood of the game. Duh.
I get excited about something standing out, if everything stands out, then nothing stands out, no wonder the game looks boring as hell.
If everything stands out the viewer can read the screen easier and play the game better. It's a basic game design concept.
That pic is in no way too grey. As long as they add nice decoration, cool, different monsters and some gore to the place, it wouldnt be boring at all.
Thats what they basically did in D2, and it worked great. I want an improved version of that.
Blizzard North would totally disagree with you there. After all, Jay Wilson conferred with them about art direction and they said they did not follow your formula. They said they used a much wider color palette than what you are advocating.
2nd paragraph: Well thats also what you see in most photoshopped pictures; saturated, dark and less colorful.
And thats why people dislike the pics. Only draining color and light doesnt cut it. If done professionally -by Blizz- it can be so much more kickass.
Wow, I'm glad they said they aren't changing it for you guys. Otherwise, they'd be delaying a great game just because it's not bland enough for you. Any ambience that you seek can easily be made up for by the dramatic music. Wait...I've got an idea for you. How about when you get the game, you turn the brightness settings down. Problem solved. I'm a fucking genius. They can maintain their art direction and you can have your darker color palette.
Thats why it was rethorical, you can only assume it affects everything.
It's a bad question because it's based on what you think looks bad. Don't respond point by point to try to save yourself when it's obvious that you are making mistakes in the ways you choose to argue things.
Minus the lighting? I'm sorry but, it pretty much got the same lighting, exept it isn't fucking overall green.
Less color=more monotone. Period. This isn't some debatable ambiguous thing. This is a fact. GG.
Thats so much crap, are you telling me that a relative gray level, wich would be designed by Blizzard (including exciting things like flamethrowers, and magical monsters, and so on) would be "boring"?
Yes. Blizzard said it themselves. You've read the articles. I find it strange that you and so many others keep arguing the same points over and over even after Blizzard themselves have said, "WE made the game like that at first,...and it turned out to be boring and repetivive" (I'm paraphrasing Blizz). How much more can you ask for? They made it gray. They played it. They didn't like it. They moved on. It's like you guys are conveniently forgetting things from the articles in order to keep rambling about how much you hate those scary greens!
I can't think of anything thats more boring. Even a completely gray game (wich we aren't asking) where only a few things stand out is less boring then when everything stands out.
You need to make sure everything that is important stands out. And Blizz has done this. making everything gray doesn't help things stand out. It also makes the game feel more drab and boring.
This is hilarious, what if they said this: "we tried making it a hack & slash, but we didn't like the repetitiveness to play through, so we decided to make it a shooter"?
I mean seriously, "they tried it and it didn't work", ACCORDING TO THEM, that is if they simply aren't LYING about it, wich they might aswell are.
You think Blizzard lied? To what purpose? It's all you can do now, is just make up things in order to feel you have a point to make. Right?
I hate to break it to you, but Diablo isn't the be all and end of all of being anti monotone. (multitone?)
No one said that Diablo is an "anti-monotone" game. We are saying that good game design is about avoiding a monochromatic color scheme and making a world that people enjoying playing through over and over without becoming bored.
Its just much more fun to come across something standing out in a grey dark level, then getting bombarded with things standing out so when something actually needs your attention, you consider it to be the same as everything else. Thats monotone, thats boring.
Your version of fun does not apply to everyone. You are misusing the term monotone. Many colors or adding a vibrancy to a level does not make it monotone. Making it mostly the same shade of gray makes it monotone - which is what you are asking for. I know you are trying to reason that little torches and items with color will make the game more interesting and exciting so we need to drown them in dark grays and then excite them with a hint of red or orange, but in the end what you are asking for is more monotone from a technical standpoint. And it does get boring. It isn't as exciting as a dungeon that feels alive and ripe with evil. Green is just a color. No need to be scared of it.
I have nothing against eerie green lightning, the thing is, its nothing but green lightning, and it isn't even eerie at all. Maybe in the textbook about colors it is written that green implies eerie, but do you really think slapping green on whatever makes anything eerie per definition? If "eerie" is what the D3 artists were going for then, wow, get some people with talent Blizzard.
I'm sure BLizzard didn't just "slap" green on anything. And the fact that you are questioning the talent of Blizzards art team shows me that you are unwilling to see their work for what it really is. The fact remains that green implies certain things to the human mind and it is effective in created a definite mood. If you can't get into it that's your problem. I can get into it.
The dungeon we saw wasn't "nothing but green". That's exageration. That kills your point.
Gray doesn't contain all colors - white does.
Also, gray is probably one of the least boring colors imaginable, it consist of every color.
I hate to use Wiki,...but...look at this: GREY/GRAY
GREY— Commonly represents —
boredom, reality, seriousness, neutrality, and mediocrity
You imply the wrong thing, it is not my stance that neon green is ok and neon pink is not.
I'm also not saying its someone elses stance, but it was implied that way, so i don't see whats wrong in asking that question. (wich still didn't get answered by the way)
I answered it above. Do you even read my posts? Or do you see my post, instantly hit QUOTE and just start making up things to argue with as you go?
And, isn't it "ok to eat whales"? I mean, Eskimo's eat whales all the time, like they should, whales are just asmuch a viable food as fish, sadly its not because of them they are getting extinct.
You really don't mind making yourself look stupid in order to avoid a point do you? No, that's not a flame. It's amazing to me that you just said this. I guess it's all you could come up with.
It is strange that you make me look like the closeminded one, while you disregard pink "because it has a different effect", probably written in that same textbook about colors of yours. Again, whats wrong with pink? Infact, i find pink to be much eerier, if you want to argue that way, but again, there is no exact science that states "green is eerie", "pink is not". Thats utter BS. I don't see anything being eerie in that dungeon, not a single thing, regardless of it being green or not, wich is what it is, namely just a green sourceless light. I'm not someone thinking "eerie, its green", my mind isn't that simple. Blizzard needs to do a whole lot better.
I'm putting your quote about PINK into my sig. Thanks for that. I didn't disregard anything. I said that pink has a different effect so it might not work for a shady dungeon. Green does work however.
Thats horribly bad gamedesign, wow. Maybe if you're playing tetris, but Diablo? Are you fucking kidding me?
Things need to stand out. We need to be able to read the screen well. The barbarian and the enemies stand out well.So do the buttons. Blizz did its job.
So wider color-palette means green and blue in DUNGEONS?!?
Not every place has to have every color, there are lots of places to show the different colors.
I highly doubt that every color is there. Green and blue does not constitute every color. Mist is water vapor. Water is often associated with the color blue. Mist connotes mystery. I don't see why not. Green is the color of poison and such. That connotes death. Rather fitting themes.
Umm, i think you took the wrong quote.
Or just didnt properly read what you quoted, not a good idea.
I said, just cutting the colors and light is NOT enaugh.
But cutting the colors is something you're advocating. If that's not enough, well you're simply being greedy. Oh well, they've already made up their minds. May as well take what you can get. Consider it a consulation prize.
do you really think slapping green on whatever makes anything eerie per definition?... Also, gray is probably one of the least boring colors imaginable, it consist of every color.
What if I rephrased your own question and said, "Do you really think slapping gray on whatever makes anything eerie per definition?" Also, if you believe gray is one of the least boring colours imaginable because it consists of every colour, then you must think black is the greatest pigment in the world because it contains all the colours of the rainbow! Would you like to see the game plastered with black to create a mood?
Quote from "Doppelganger" »
i don't see whats wrong in asking that question. (wich still didn't get answered by the way)
This question can only be answered one way. What is the answer you would like to hear?
