Conveyed by some Diablo III thread, I was wondering how many of you here are using platforms other than Windows, or are planning to.
I've been planning to get SUSe or Ubuntu for a while now... the "while" turned into roughly 2 years, but Ubuntu really looks nice on other computers I have seen.
(hopes the whole entire thread won't be left blank)
FreeBSD is heavily widespread in Russia for some reason.
I am planning to reinstall Windows sometimes after May 15 (AP testing), perhaps I'll leave space for a Linux. Long ago I installed some version of Linux that runs off DVD and it was really interesting.
I've thought a fair bit about Linux, one option, the more likely being Ubuntu. I don't know if I'll do it or not though, since much of what I do uses Windows only Apps/games, and emulators are kinda pointless when you can just use windows itself.
Windows is the Warrior, Macs are Mages, and the others are those strange classes in between. And thats not because they start with the same letter, its because Windows are more straight forward and everyone can use them (like picking up a sword), while macs are a bit different and a much more visually magical.
I use Windows and have an oldish Mac computer. I first played Diablo and Diablo II on my mac. Sooo slow lol, that computer is oold.
If you ask me you can't learn Linux without getting Linux. I read a book on SUSe some time ago and I totally forgot the stuff that I got from it. I vaguely remember some root commands... the way it works with me - I don't get it until I start using it.
I honestly wish I could still use DOS. I was really good at it. I wonder what OS today is closest to it, not counting of course Window's command prompt.
a text-based Linux shell would be pretty close no?
It looks the same... But not really much other then that...
Dos was fucking awsome. (If memory serves correctly, wasn't Windows ran on some sort of Dos up to 95? If not then maybe I am thinking of something else...)
In Windows 95 and 98 I think, you could restart your computer in true DOS. I have an old computer with DOS on it for playing older games, but when I don't feel like hooking it up, I may tinker with DOS Box. But DOS Box's success varies with each game you try on it. The most common problem is getting the sound to work.

I got DosBox but I had limited succes as well. I only used it with WC2, and it seems to not like it. Depending on where your mouse is, it may or may not show up, which completely and utterlly sucks...

Don't forget about Windows ME. At work I'm currently trying to support these ancient dahlgren engraving machines. The software they use is mainly compatible with Windows 3.0 and Windows 3.1. Try troubleshooting that stuff, ew.
Dos is a very limited program. It's really only used for non-gui navigation and what not. The only time I'd ever use command line is for scripting or troubleshooting without loading a OS.
I did have a chance to play with DSL(Damn Small Linux?) from a live CD. Other than that I havn't had much experience with Linux.
Well I believe 95, 98, and ME were all built on a DOS infrastructure. So I've always referenced them as DOS Operating Systems. You may be right whether restarting in dos was an option on ME. I'm not sure.
Engraving machines - like if you go to an antique shop, and there is a belt buckle that says "COWBOY", the COWBOY was engraved into the belt buckle. Basically old old old engraving machines with old software.
Yes. They use Corel 4(another ancient version) to make images, then converts the images to something the controller reads, the engraver makes the designs on the metal.

Ubuntu looks really good in my opinion. And there's multiple versions of Ubuntu, which I think is awsome.
Honestly I am not intersted that much in the Macs, and I haven't really heard of "FreeBSD"...

If you don't know the difference without looking it up, you shouldn't get Linux at all.

Unix or Solaris, but don't bother.
