ok i just finished watching this video and then i spent a good 2 hours reading through the lore/fluff/history/story of warhammer 40k and the imperium and man... it is honestly some sad stuff. Really really interesting though
here is something that is pretty epic sounding, especially when listening to the music in that video
"Listen but closely Brothers, for my life's breath is all but spent. There shall come a time far from now when our Chapter itself is dying, even as I am now dying, and our foes shall gather to destroy us. Then my children, I shall listen for your call in whatever realm of death holds me, and come I shall, no matter what the laws of life and death forbid. At the end I will be there. For the final battle. For the Wolftime." ~ Leman Russ
Anyways to give you guys a quick run down in case you dont know what warhammer 40k is about. The Emperor of man who is immortal had lived for many many thousands of years, born from the sacrifice of many shamans who made one being at 8000 BC on Earth. he lived his life having children who themselves were immortal but dont play a big role yet. He eventually united the Earth under one banner and became the world leader, he set up colonies on mars and the moon and prepared space ships to go out and expand the imperium.
a lot of stuff happened in this time, and in it eventually the marines were created. During this time the Primarchs were created, however they were all scattered across the universe by the Chaos gods in an attempt to sabotage the Emperors work for peace. Eventually they were all recovered and put in charge of every space marine chapter, 1 for each of the 20 ( i believe).
Eventually the great crusade started and all the marine chapters went out and started taking over planets (with the exception of the imperial fists who stayed and protected the Earth) and making them part of the Imperium. Most tried to do it peacefully, killing only the violent. The UltraMarines are famous for leaving the planets in the best condition with the least damage.
And finally the golden age came to pass as Horus, the most powerful primarch, second to that of only the emperor himself was convinced/lured/infested by the chaos Gods. His close friends noticed a change and eventually came to that conclusion. However Horus convinced half of the chapters of space marines including his own that the Emperor was the bad guy and that the forces of Chaos would help the imperium in the long run.
This led to the Horus heresy and the imperium was thrown into chaos and civil war. Eventually horus was defeated, but not before a lot of good men died, along with many of the primarchs, and the loss of an entire chapter (the thousand sons) due to a misunderstanding
(the guy on the ground is the primarch for the blood angels who sacrificed himself to give the emperor time, he foresaw this as he had the power of foresight, but he still knowingly died for the emperor)
During the battle with the emperor and Horus (who was aided by 4 chaos gods) horus was slain and the emperor mortally wounded. His body was transported to what is known as the golden throne, here he alone makes it possible for warp travel and keeps chaos at bay.
in the heresy however, the plans for making space marines were stolen allowing chaos to make endless armies. and plans were also taken for how those blessed with psychic power could help control warp travel. because that was stolen, thousands of psychers per day have to sacrifice themselves to make warp travel possible. In the golden age, the emperor trained thousands to control it, in this way they would never die from it.
(here is the primarch of the ultramarines who was poisoned, who now is kept in stasis for he simply exists but does not live)
anyways now the year is 40,000 and there is only war.
I have to say that the story in Warhammer 40,000 is possibly one of the greatest ever, one of the greatest struggles and like our own lives, we will never see the conclusion of the battle of our people. We right now are living someone elses dream from long ago, let us ourselves now dream of something good for someone to live later.
Anyways hopefully i was able to introduce at least one person to warhammer 40k, though most people who play computer already know about it.
*btw just wanted to add that i used to collect warhammer a long long time ago, i have space marines, tau, and bretonnians (from warhammer fantasy). then i also bought dawn of war and all the expensions except for the latest one as i hate eldar and dark eldar i hate just as much so i figured it was a waste.
Nice post. You have introduced me, and kind of seduced me into wanting to find out a little more. So I've heard of this game before, but never really thought anything of it. Maybe I'll try it out, funds willing.

I recommend doing so, you will not regret it, the strategy alone involved in this masterpiece was simply stunning for it's time!
I have always though Of WH as a mix between Starcraft and Diablo.
Also, any word on the upcoming WH title for console, I think I seen something on Xbox live about it.
"To attempt an understanding of Maud'Dib without true understanding, is to attempt seeing Truth without knowing Falsehood. It is the attempt to see the Light without knowing Darkness. It cannot be."
this quote is one of my favorites too! I have not seen it for awhile thx!
Actually, WarCraft is based directly on Warhammer and StarCraft is based directly on Warhammer 40K.
hmm I fail to see the relevance of this point as I was not referring to what the games were originally based on, I just think of it that way, while you and many may not.

It was simply to clear up any misconceptions you may have.
