well in the movies and final speaches by NPCs in harrogath, it says the destruction of the worldstone will allow demons to more readily enter the world of sanctuary, and this is a problem, well for the people of sanctuary, it is a good thing for us, coz it means more games, more games being Diablo 3, and its possible expansion, then based on how that game or games end will dictate as to the existance of Diablo 4 and whether or not it will be a sequel or a prequel to the entire series, but im slightly getting ahead of myself.
back to where i began,
-the worldstone is destroyed, this allows more demons and of course more powerfull demons and demon lords to pour through into the world of sanctuary.
-the prime evils are trapped in the void, in the burning hells, but as we all know no one is ever trapped in a void for ever, there are many examples of this is computer/console games and there subsequent expansions/sequels
-now baal's soulstone is the only stone not to have been shown being destroyed at the hellforge in act 4, but since both mephisto's and diablo's stones were destroyed, why not baal's as well.
-as you recall of the prime evils and lesser evils, only lesser evils have eluded us thus far, Belial Lord of Lies, and Azmodan Lord of Sin, now it was these two who banished the prime evils to the mortal world, and with the prime evils in the void, these two are prime candidates for ruler of Hell.
-now as many people speculate there is the matter of tyrael, is he corrupted, possibly, but it is a little overused concept in games, but somewhat logical, if one is exposed to a contaminated substance of often becomes infected, in the case of tyrael it would be exposed to the corrupted worldstone. of course if tyrael has become corrupted from exposure to the corrupted worldstone then the character/s from LOD should also be corrupted, they spend more time in the vicinity of the worldstone than tyrael did, and im not including multiple difficulties or baal runs. Unless tyrael has been corrupted by having part of the worldstone enter his body, but again this is a fairly overused concept, this is effectively what happened to the warrior in diablo 1, tal rasha and the priest guy (whos name i can never remember but should) who was possessed by mephisto
-another possible tyrael storyline is his banishment from heaven, if i recall angels in the diablo lore are forbidden from interferring with most humans and their lifes directly, tyrael has done this on several occasions through out the games and texts.
-in the diablo text(not the novels) it names several more angels and demons, but we have not seen them in any of the games
-slightly different but just as important to not, is the fact that there is a large portion of the world of sanctuary that we have not explored, the kingdoms of westmarch (the home of the Paladins), scosglen (home of the druids), amazon home lands (home of the amazons, DURR), the jungles north, East and south of kurast (the homes of the Assassins, Necromancers, Sorcerors and sorceresses), also there are some other important places on the map of sanctuary, namely the prison of Inarius.
how can you not get a game out of all that? I ask you

very good topic and i stand behind elfen on this one. in actuality only mephisto's stone was destroyed however. (i might have forgotten the end of the fourth act's scene) anyways the three prime evils can combine their strength and bust out of the burning hells and continue on their everlasting urge to take over the mortal realm.
as elfen also said, we have yet to explore the other realms. not only this, but we can also go back in time and see how diablo got under tristram or where and how his brothers got to where they are. diablo 3 can continue the story and the next game after that can show us how we got to diablo 3.
remember that the fascination with diablo is that we dont know completely what the hell (pardon the pun) is happening or what we should do. maybe we can learn what is happening and what to do but we still have that human quality that makes us want to know how we got there and to know what happened. why else would we read text after text about diablo and its history?? why else would we feel its important to know the timeline, what and how it happened??
to come back to the main topic of this thread i think that the evils can never be gone forever since they own hell. if you kill something evil where does it pop up?? in hell. now the soulstone put a little twist on this but there are possibilities in which other evil doers will find ways to bring them back. also there are the lesser evils which are mentioned in the books as fighting a civil war in hell trying to gain complete control of hell itself. they can easily stop, unite, and take over the mortal realm as well as one defeat the other and take over hell only to organize and then assault humanity. there are so many possibilities that its not even funny. new evils can appear, more lands, many more things to do.
when i saw the ending to LoD i thought it was over cause without the worldstone the link between heaven/hell and earth were gone forever but i realized that the barriers between the relms wore away making it easier for the angels/demons to enter our world easier, and there were still Azmodan and Belial (this was cleared up a while later). so i agree with the other people that the ending was left wide open for a sequel.
ps. i also think there is a chance tyrael becomes evil (either that or he died destroying the worldstone or went back to heaven where we will meet him again).

without good there is no evil and with out evil there is no good so for one to exist so must the other without both there is no existance.......so in conclusion evil will return unless heaven kills itself to rid us all of evil....highly unlikely scenario....

again i say to all of you faithful diablo series fans out there, in the movies and final speaches by NPCs in harrogath, it says the destruction of the worldstone will allow demons to more readily enter the world of sanctuary, and this is a problem, well for the people of sanctuary, it is a good thing for us, coz it means more games, more games being Diablo 3, and its possible expansion, then based on how that game or games end will dictate as to the existance of Diablo 4 and whether or not it will be a sequel or a prequel to the entire series, but im slightly getting ahead of myself.

and all that was just storyline points, spose i better start with some non storyline points.
-if i recall the trend for blizzard games has been WCx3, D, SCx2, Dx2, WCx4, i.e Warcraft, Warcraft2, Warcraft2 ex, Diablo, Starcraft, Starcraft ex, Diablo2, Diablo2 ex, Warcraft3, Warcraft3 ex, Warcraft (WOW), Warcraft (WOW Ex) Yes? so the next game/s should be Diablo?

Many people believe the game is over - the Prime Evils are gone forever.
Others believe that the game had one of the most wide open endings possible.
Vote, and discuss.
