If at all possible, I’d like to make sure there’s a way for those things to be added in. We have other goals, where we want each class to be distinctive from one another, we want archetypes to be very strong—I should be able to tell you the name of a class, and you should know what it is, right away. You should have an idea of the kinds of things that that class can do. Even that was contentious, because a lot of the developers liked the idea of more original names. One of the names that people on the team liked was “dervish.” They thought, “Aw, there’s never been a dervish in a game,” and I said, “What the hell is a dervish?!” I mean, I know what it is, but it’s a little obscure. So we said it’s fine to take a class and twist the visual expectation or the functionality expectation, but naming wise you should probably give people something that they can really chew on, because that might be the first thing they ever see. And if they’re going to be interested in the class, it’s better not be something that they’ve never heard of.

so.. i could see a samurai class in the game aswell as a magic class but it will probably be very different from the one we're all used to, i'm not sure what other class we'd be seeing.
Samurai is too much of a culturally exclusive term to be a Diablo 3 class. What I mean by this is all the Diablo classes so far transcend culture in the sense that all cultures recognize assassins, sorcerers, barbarians, etc, but a samurai specifically refers to something from feudal Japan. Blizzard would not do this. It would be like making a Navy Seal class or something.

It wouldn't called samurai, it would have another name. Also, druids, paladins, amazons, and necromancers are real world terms that stem from actual cultures and religions. I'm sure you were careful not to mention them in order to make your point seem valid.

I don't think it really matters. The classes themselves take on a specific culture in the game, so why not? Anyways, a witch doctor is, itself a very culture-specific archetype. I don't see why they should limit themselves in this way.
All that matters is that you know exactly what the class is about (regarding form, not function) by the name alone.

Samurai? Good thinking but no thx, there is already so much eastern influence on video games, and that awesome, i love final fantasy 7 and dynasty warriors but this is DIABLO. Diablo IMO is great because it is in essence a Gothic fantasy horror, using middle/dark age influenced elements such as Paladins, Barbarians, Druids, and so on.
I think that part of what makes Diablo great is that it is different in that it keeps its middle/dark age feel instead of turning into another japanese fantasy game. Those are great on occasion, but if every game is a blurred mix of the two, then individuality will be lost.
Take the barbarian for example, despite certain more extreme things here and there he is relatively historically accurate. The armor isnt TOO exxagerated, the helms, believe it or not arent all that different from reality. Danish, Norwegian, and German knights consistently used great helms with horns on them similar to the one used by Sigon.
As a result you have a brutal, frightening, and more believable character. He is manlier than if he were covered in crazy frilly overly ornate and decorated armor.
And that is JUST what Final fantasy is about these days unfortunatley. As Schwarzenegger would call them, the heroes all look like "girly men."
Now with the Witch-doctor, I like their creative idea here, adding some dark voodoo to the mix of Diablo, but is it just a Troll from warcraft with human features? Nonetheless he is pretty intriguing, I want to see what he can do when faced with bigger monsters and such.
A samurai could be cool if it were VERY historically accurate, but if he has overly crazy hair and huge yellow shoes and uses a key as a blade, I will be VERY disappointed.

Remember the mask from D2? That was a samurai mask. No doubt. If they were going to implement the samurai class it would take the place of the amazon. 2H weapons and bows. Probably would use lightning. Why would a samurai have spiky hair? Traditional samurai wear either top knots or pony tails.

I agree...people that are saying it is too culturally specific are ignoring the fact that most of the other classes originate from a specific culture. Barbarians tend to refer to the barbarians of the north (germanic tribes). Amazons are from what I can tell from Greek mythology. Witch doctor seems quite African. Legendary warriors from several cultures are used as prototypes in Diablo except for asian warriors. Why the exclusion? Simple because its so used in other games?
1) Samurai really don't fit well in diablo's universe. It's a personal opnion. For me samurai is just so cultural specific that i don't like it outside anything it isn't feudal japan (yes, i hated samurai class concept in FFXI and in any other game). For me if they only fit in a story that are 100% about samurais (like Blade of the Immortal and Kenshin).
2) I can't imagine a samurai using elemental attacks and spells. It's too weird for me. However, we allredy have a 100% physical weponmaster, no more need for ''magicless'' warriors.
3) Samurai is a over used class. It's almost like wizards and priests. In a game were you have many classes (8+ classes), its aceptable to get those generical archetypes, but in a game like diablo were we going to have only 5 classes, i think they will bring us 3 99% new concept, something never saw before. I really can't say how stupid it would be if the 3 remaining classes were Wizard, Cleric and Ranger.
I'm really not close-minded and i have nothing against oriental culture. I would really like a oriental class (and a oriental act) but - PLEASE - don't come with Samurai and Ninja stuff. It's overused.

I really don't understand that one. You give the standard "opinion" disclaimer, but still. Diablo 2 brought a middle-eastern type town, a south american jungle setting, and a mountainous cold snowy setting. That would point to no place or people off limits to the diablo universe. I'm sure after Diablo 1 people would have said "jungle? jungle? are you kidding me?" but they made it work. Anyways they could easily fit a samurai in the game and make it feel like it belongs. I would love exploring an old oriental emperors tomb with a dark samurai. We've already done gothic-like tombs, egyptian-like tombs, and mayan-like tombs.

It's weird that people think that asian themes don't fit into Diablo, the assassin was a ninja for christ sake. She used claw weapons similar to the ones used in ninjutsu. Martial arts kicks. I think all this negativity towards the samurai is simply because of the name. If Blizz is intending on making a samurai class they will change the name. Just like they changed Christianity into Zakarum.
2) I can't imagine a samurai using elemental attacks and spells. It's too weird for me. However, we allredy have a 100% physical weponmaster, no more need for ''magicless'' warriors.
I can't imagine anyone using magic, cause there is no such thing. If you can imagine all the classes in d2 using spells they why can't you imagine a samurai using them? Ridiculous, opinionated, argument.

Right, like you have any proof of that. The two so far are Barbarian (overused) and witchdoctor (semi-overused), so where are you pulling these conclusions from? Your ass?

Haven't you read my post ? I dind't said Asian themes don't fit into diablo'1s universe. I say i would like a asian class (and a asian act) u.u
I just said that i would not like to see a samurai in game's like diablo, and i give my reasons, if you disagree, to bad.
And why can't you imagine something that don't exist ? I (and everyone except you) easily can. And the classes who have magic powers in diablo are the classes that in our mythology content's had magic powers.
Sorceress, the resnascence satanist/artists who steal corpse from graveyards (necromancers), druids, the elite templars (paladin), legendary godlike female warriosr (from both greek and south america's native legends) and japonese ninjas are all characters from our world's legends who ''theorically'' had MAGICAL powers.
Also German tehres legends that german barbarian had unhuman powers (berserker) but nothing linked to magic.
All the myths about samurai are just about godlike swordplay, endurance, precision, honor and courage. Nothing pulling elecrity out of nowhere. Thats why Samurai casting spells sounds really weird - no just for me, but for everyone who study universal mythology.
Again: no simply because some class got to use shields. And a samurai type one would not.
How can you say that? They may take a samurai as the basis for the class, but they can make the class unique in anyway they want in my opinion a sheild weilding samurai/footman could be pretty badass in that it would be an original twist on a common class

YUCK!
It would be a cool concept to have a Samurai, but I highly doubt Blizzard would put that type of class in D3 seeing as how they would be difficult to input into the world of Sanctuary.
No.
I have no real reason other than that, Samurai doesn't feel right.
I mean has there even been any game, anime, or even book that had a Samurai that uses some magical or non physical skills?
My understanding is that Samurais are all about perfecting their swordsmanship.
and personally I don't like being limited in my options of weapon choices.
