Has anyone else noticed that Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto's soulstones were all shattered and corrupted pieces may remain in Sanctuary?
Mephisto:
Mephisto finally managed to overcome the powers of the Soulstone that imprisoned him enough to influence and corrupt the local priesthood, known as the Zakarum. The Demon then had the priests work spells to shatter the Soulstone into seven shards, breaking the mystic seal and freeing the Lord of Hatred. Mephisto drove the six smaller shards into the left palms of six Zakarum archbishops who were then charged with bringing him nourishment in the form of human sacrifices while running their temple. The largest stone pierced the hand of the Que-Hegan, the highest divine authority of the Zakarum faith. It was this body that the Demon used as his manifestation on the mortal plane, warping the mortal’s form into an approximation of his true visage. For years the corrupted religious leaders of the Zakarum have kept Mephisto supplied with information and misguided followers to carry out his plans of conquest. He eventually met up with Diablo, and the two began to work to enslaving the human race. However, Mephisto was later killed by the same adventurers (or adventurer) that would go on to kill Diablo. Mephisto's Soulstone was destroyed in the Hellforge after his defeat, ensuring his banishment from Sanctuary.
Diablo:
The Archbishop Lazarus was an ambassador from the Zakarum Church and an advisor to King Leoric. According to the manual to Diablo II - in the form of a letter from the Patriarch of Zakarum - Lazarus was the Custodian of Mephisto's Soulstone in Kurast sometime prior to his arrival in Khanduras. When Leoric set up court in the abandoned Monastery, Lazarus was lured into the monastery's depths by Diablo, where Lazarus proceeded to shatter the soulstone that imprisoned the Prime Evil. After Diablo failed to fully possess Leoric himself, Lazarus brought the King's son, Albrecht, into the labyrinth to serve as the mortal host for the Lord of Terror. After Leoric's death, Lazarus emerged from the Monastery and rallied the villagers into a mob to find Albrecht - but the treacherous Archbishop led them right into the lair of the Butcher.
Baal:
During the attempt to contain him inside a Soulstone, the stone was shattered and the largest remaining shard was not enough to contain the demon.Tal Rasha, a powerful mage of the Horadrim, volunteered to take on the role of an extended Soulstone and be sealed in a tomb to wrestle with Baal's spirit for all eternity. But Baal's spirit won over the mortal Tal Rasha, and was set free indirectly by his brother Diablo by Marius' intervention.
When you kill Mephisto you only get one soulstone.
What happened to all these shards? Or have I forgotten something.
Not to mention all the shards of the worldstone that are bound to be lying around Arreat Crater.
We know from Mephisto's example with the council that tainted shards can be used to grant enormous demonic power to human beings.
The entire head and left side of the humans body was contorted into a demonic form with immense power. Last we saw, the World Stone was tainted by Baals demonic energies and then shattered into many pieces. What would happen if one being collected all of these pieces, or if they started using these pieces in humans themselves to form an army?
I kinda posted that they still had some kind of anchor in sanctuary. I believe 100% in this, unless I missed some lore that states they were destroyed later on.
Does anyone remember that one early Diablo 2 trailer showing the wanderer in a wagon holding the soulstone and then dropping it? If he plunged it into his head, why does he later appear without it in his head? doesnt the presence of the soulstone make the person into Diablo? And why doesnt the souldstone ever appear in the dark wanderer's head in the Diablo 2 cut scenes? did I forget something?

That early trailer wasn't used in the final game. It's non canon, means it basically didn't happen in the story line.
I'm pretty sure the soulstone appears in the wanderers head a lot in D2 cutscenes.
Edit: Actually the only part I see the soulstone in Diablo's head is in Terror's End when he's in demon form. Which is weird because it's not in his head when he transforms in Enter Hell... Odd.

it is in his head, its just covered by skin. you can see a scar on his head.
but i heard soulstones were crafted from shards of worldstone.
your take on this?
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Remember the String of Ears
"to the worm in horseradish, the world is horseradish."
when they released mephisto, the largest shard was given to his high priest so he could become mephisto incarnate - i'm assuming the largest shard was the only one large enough for mephisto's power, otherwise we would have 7 mephistos running around everywhere
it also fits with the baal part - the shard must be a certain size to be able to contain the power of one of the prime evils, the other 6 shards from mephisto's soulstone were not large enough to hold his power
and to the part about the wanderer: by stabbing himself in the head with the soulstone, he took diablo into himself, and i am thinking he fused with it, with the soulstone becoming part of him, as it is there on diablo when he dies - unless he stabbed himself in the face again with the soulstone when he transformed i don't see how it came to be on his head (i think it was on his forehead when you killed him, correct me if i'm wrong).
btw apples: there is no scar on his head, there are depressions where horns should be
but i heard soulstones were crafted from shards of worldstone.
your take on this?
Seems like that's the general consensus. I believe Tyrael gave the soulstones to the Horadrim but never really explained where they came from so people think they came from the world stone. Seems logical to me.
My thoughts were though, even if these smaller pieces aren't the biggest pieces of the soulstones, they are still corrupted lying around containing demonic essence. What effect could they have on people, monsters, and the surrounding area?
Especially the Arreat Crater, that place is bound to be littered with shattered pieces of the corrupted worldstone.

Yes, according to the Lore FAQ Post, the soulstones were shards taken by Tyrael and given to the horadrim, and Izual was the person responsible for showing the Prime Evils how to corrupt them.

I don't remember this trailer...but I do remember that the stone is indeed in his head. When he is in the the Tomb of Tal Rasha, when he starts screaming and changed, you can see an outline of the stone on his forehead.
Also, if you read some of the other scripts one of Cains writtings say how when he emerged from the labyrinth(i believe this is in the D2 manual, non x-pac), he could have sworn he saw an eerie red glow from under the hero's helmet, on his forehead. He later mentions how days later he sees a healed over wound upon his forehead. You never really see the stone, because his body has taken the shard deeper into the skull, and healed over.

Tyrael mentions in some of his npc text in D2 how the Soul Stones came from the World Stone itself.

The smaller shards aren't powerful enough to contain the spirits of the Three.
As you could see when you shattered Mephisto's Soulstone, his spirit his broken into smaller ones.
It's likely the same thing for Diablo and maybe Baal. I think that these smaller spirits can actually recombined themselves to recreate the Prime Evils' Soul allowing them to be reincarnated, so they don't need the Soulstones to reenter Sanctuary.
I also think that the Soulstones only made them stronger as they probably still retain the powers of their previous hosts, which means that they actually created more problems that what they solved.
Just a thought.... the evils needed the soulstones to stay on sanctuary. Tyrael said during D2 that he cant stay on sanctuary because his powers would weaken. So with the soul stones being destroyed - would this not just be banishing the demons back to hell??
If this is the case, then with the world stone destroyed now - the evils can now walk on sanctuary and not worry about losing their power.

speculation:
Even though the prime evils have been banished, i think the remaining shards still contain the same power, though maybe somewhat diminished.
another speculation:
with the desctruction of the "source" of the Soulstones (Worldstone) i would expect the Soulstones (or shards, whatever) to lose their powers aswell. Since the forces of Hell (and Heaven) wont have a problem to enter Sanctuary (that somehow doesnt look like one right now) they wont really need "anchors" for anything.

They don't want us to know that soulstone shards can grant demonic powers as they did to the council members.
I would think that the Prime Evils would have wanted to return to hell so they could regain their control over it, so maybe their ultimate goal was to have their soulstones smashed. If this is the case then they would have wanted to make it easier to reenter sanctuary, thus the corruption of the worldstone. I believe that if Baal had succeeded it would have made all of sanctuary into a host for demonic corruption. I believe that the 20 year period of peace was the result of the Prime Evils having bigger fish to fry in hell itself. I believe Lilith tried to capitalize on their downfall and bend them to her will with the dark summoning. What happened after that is hard to tell. Would Lilith also return to hell? We know from The Black Road that a demon cannot be killed unless it is slain within its own realm.
Well Baal's soul stone is still unaccounted for being destroyed.
Not to mention this massive chunk of the corrupted world stone still standing, now with armies of hell gathered around.
If a small corrupted shard had the power to grant the Council those demonic powers. A shard this size would provide whatever power needed, assuming it still works.
Baal was the one who corrupted the worldstone, Baal's stone was never destroyed at least that we saw, so does the corruption still linger in this massive shard?
Maybe this was the catalyst used to resummon Diablo for the Pandemonium event?
Many assume that baals soulstone was destroyed but I'm not so sure. Though it might have been destroyed in the explosion that leveled mount arreat.
I dont think that is the world stone, It actually looks bigger than the world stone. It looks to me like they are coming from underground, and that they had to push through all kinds of rock layers in order to emerge.
Well I doubt Baal's stone was destroyed from the explosion. In order to destroy the other two you have to use the hammer and the hellforge. Nothing in sanctuary could destroy it.
Not to mention Baal doesn't drop it, or even necessarily have it on him when you kill him. He may have passed it on to another demon.

The US versions of the Mephisto story have been changed.

The Korean version however still is unchanged.

Notice the shards in their left palms, and the fact that it converted half of their body into a demonic entity and granted them powers.
So if there are still shards out there, would they be obsolete now that the biggest shard is destroyed?
Better yet, would the corrupted world stone shards act in the same way and store demonic energies?
Fuck you, I'm a dragon.

The cinematic one is:
So looks like they settled for destroyed Mt. Arreat.
