Ogden's Tavern in Old Tristram is named Tavern of the Rising sun. I don't know if anyone has thought of this before, but it seems to be a reference to that famous House of the Rising Sun song/folksong.
Yeah, I only just discovered this awesome song now. I know, I'm a bit slow, but I haven't heard anyone else mention it before. I just love this song. Its been covered so many times, the first version I heard was the one by Muse and I loved it, then I searched google and found the Animal's version, which I love even more.
The House is apparently a brothel, and is described as being not a very good place to be at. Kind of suits the whole 'dark Tristram' thing. And we all know that Blizzard likes putting in references in their games, I don't see why it wouldn't be a reference.
There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I'm one
My mother was a tailor
She sewed my new blue jeans
My father was a gamblin' man
Down in New Orleans
Now the only thing a gambler needs
Is a suitcase and trunk
And the only time he's satisfied
Is when he's on a drunk
Oh mother tell your children
Not to do what I have done
Spend your lives in sin and misery
In the House of the Rising Sun
Well, I got one foot on the platform
The other foot on the train
I'm goin' back to New Orleans
To wear that ball and chain
Well, there is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I'm one
Theres so many. I can only think of just few but maybe only one lol.
The Nephalim would be a Direct Reference to those of the Judeo Christian Bible.
In the Diablo Universe they are the spawn of Angel and Demon, in the bible they are spawns of "The Sons of God"(angels) and "the Daughters of Man" (human women).
I have waited for a thread like this forever because of all the references I've found, not only biblically but also historical and some funny ones with weapons and other gear.

Lol, +1 point for streamline- I really lolled at that. But I guess Mephisto, the condensed form of Mephistopheles, would be a reference. He was a tricky demon in the play Faust (as well as a Demon in Jewish mythological history, although no accepted as cannon in most Catholic or modern Christian.)
Baal, of course, was the name of many gods, and many gods included that in their names. It simply means "lord", and as such was also included in many royalty names. Baal is also referenced as Beelzebub, Lord of the Flies, in some cases. Originally, he was a god of.... I want to say the Philistines.... Or the culture that had the epic of Gilgamesh, although I can't remember their name now.
The sword The Atlantean from Diablo II (+2 to all skills or just to Paladin skills, I can't remember) is an obvious reference to the pseudo-history of the Atlantians (pseudo-history meaning mostly myth but there is some- *some*- evidence.)
Achmel is the name of a demon, I think, in some religions background, but I can't remember, specifically.
And, of course, the arcitecture and way of life of many of the Acts' cities (maybe excluding Act IV.)
The Countess is a reference to Elizabeth Báthory, as it's said that she (the Countess in the game) has been buried alive for the charges of bathing in the blood of a hundred virgins. I wonder if the bath is the thing we see in Andariel's lair or not.
> 'Hyrda' spell and 'Hydra Edge' sword refer to an Ancient Greek mythological monster - the Hydra!
> Pentagrams are also representative of ancient cultures in the real world and are used frequently in the game...
Pentagrams were used symbolically in ancient Greece and Babylonia. The pentagram has magical associations, and many people who practice Neopagan faiths wear jewelry incorporating the symbol. Christians once more commonly used the pentagram to represent the five wounds of Jesus, and it also has associations within Freemasonry.
> Belial and Azmodan are also references to Judeo-Christian demons (Belial and Azmodeus/Azmodai).
> 'Amazon' is another reference from our world, relating to the legendary warrior-women of Greek mythology. Amazon meaning something like "Without Breast" for the Greeks. They were called this because they were rumoured to either cut off or burn off one of their breasts so as to be able to use a bow more freely.
> The name 'Tristram' comes from numerous Arthurian-age characters. There was a Sir Tristan (Tristan also being spelled Tristram) in the Knights of the Round Table. Additionally, there was a Tristan / Tristram associated with the mythological lost city of Lyonesse - which 'sunk' similar to the Atlantis myth.

Belial can either be a demon of sorts or actually even a reference to Lucifer himself depending on what your referencing it from.
And as far as Diablo is concerned, no it's not a proper noun in most cases but culturally it is used for both meaning. And then of course there IS the specific title EL Diablo, but it's a video game, i dont think it matters if the el is there or not. So i think that saying obviously it is not a reference to that is foolish imo

So guys, should I bother to put all the references in the first post, or should I not bother, and perhaps just delete spam from the thread if it ever comes up?

What? Are you referring to something not from this thread? Because you're gonna have to explain yourself a bit better there. Half of your sentences are still in your head and not typed out.

No doubt, I have that problem. Well. Usually when it comes to demons and angels, time tends to definitely obscure the original meaning. I believe the oldest reference to the definition of Belial is that of Satan/Lucifer in the bible. But there are more definitions to who Belial actually is. I was just pointing out that who Belial is can't REALLY be pin pointed.
And to Manux...Baal was an ancient God originally worshiped i believe by...the Sumarians? Or those of Ur or something? I dont remember I'm a bit rusty on this stuff atm. But regardless, dont take everything you read on Wiki as absolute facts lol.

Well
, this is an obscure reference, and I don't have sources available ATM (on the mobile) but lilith was Adam's first wife in the garden of Eden, made from the same clay as Adam. However she would not now down and be subservient to Adam as he wished, so god sent her an ultimatum- comply or have your babies torn from you (something like one a day or year) and sent to the bowels of hell. She refused, and now her spawn make up many of the foul beings of hell. Btw, this story is not in any printed version of the bible. And yes, Adam did eventually get his trophy wife.
Will edit when I get the chance to cite some sources (pretty sure I learned this from the history channel.)

When killing two birds with one stone, there is a question that often floats in to my mind: Where the hell did I put that shotgun?
There is an important distinction between poetic justice and irony. Poetic justice kills a homicidal maniac with his own gun. Irony makes a homicidal maniac's gun drip water out the barrel.

Adam had only one wife. The episode of Lilith that people tried to conjure up in conjucture with the gap between Genesis 1 and 2 is fake and not cannon. It overlooks the poetic nature of writing from that time period and culture, where a large, more "flowery" segment is first written, and then it is subsequently followed by larger narratives on a single part of the first, large piece.
Lord de Seis is named after the game's lead programmer Richard Seis, there's one. Colenzo the Annihilator is named after Karen Colenzo. Shenk the Overseer is named after Phil Shenk.
Well , be it canon or not, there is mythological surrounding a mother of demons named lilith. I would say that has a pretty strong tie to diablo, seeing lilith is the mother of the succubi and andariel.
I know there are a bunch of items with rl references, but I'm too tired right now to hit up the arreat summit. Maybe later. Or maybe I'm just reality impaired.

Hokay, so, after trolling the arreat summit unique index here are some references to real life or actual ancient mythology:
Cerebus' Bite (druid pelt)- named after the 3 headed dog that guards the way to hell.
Titan's Revege- (amazon javelin) named for the Titans of Greek mythology, the beings that ruled before the gods.
The Grim Reaper (war scythe)- do i really need to explain this one?
Pompeii's Wrath (crowbill)- reference to the Italian city buried by a volcano (it even has % to cast volcano!)
Athena's Wrath (battle scythe)- Athena is the Greek goddess of wisdom.
Blade of Ali Baba (tulwar)- reference to the character from Arabian Nights, fittingly, Ali Baba was a rather successful treasure hunter, thus his sword has some pretty dirty mf.
Medusa's Gaze (aegis)- Medusa is a gorgon, a being from Greek mythology whose gaze turns men to stone, (she also happens to have a wicked snake hair-do)
Dracul's Grasp (vampirebone gloves)- a reference to the father of all vampires, Dracula.
And that's all I could find in the uniques. There were a couple more references to "Grim" or "The Reaper" but I didn't feel like those merited a specific mention

In the Diablo 3 Bestiary, the "author" of the writings is said to be Abd al-Hazir, this is a reference to H.P. Lovecraft´s original idea of the Necronomicron. The name he gave to the author of the Necronomicon was Abdul al-Hazred, supossedly because he was infatuated in his youth with arabic myths and lore and an old man once suggested him that name to be a common-like arabic name. Plus, the backstory of Abdul al-Hazred and Abd al-Hazir are very similar.
Also, Lovecraft´s short story "Imprisioned with the pharaos" might have inspired some of the act 2 on Diablo II although there is no direct reference i´ve noted.
Seems like the concept for the Dune Thrasher on Diablo 3 is heavily based on the Tremors movie.
How many people named Deckard do you know of? I believe "Deckard" from "Deckard Cain" comes from the Ridley Scott movie Blade Runner, where the main character is Rick Deckard, although there are not many oher similarities between these two characters.
The stonehenge ruins and the portal to Tristram on Diablo II are similar, in the sense that they are a bunch of funny looking rocks.
The goatmen resemble the fauns from real life mythos.
The Kurast environments are heavily based on the main aztec city, which is where i live now
And most obvious of all, Andariel is a red haired Pamela Anderson.
