I just started my first HC character, ever in a game and its been fun thus far. More from the fresh start to items, stash, etc than the fear of dieing.
I've been playing solo, leveling naturally and crafting upgrades as I go. I'm digging the self-found feel to the game, but I'm also drastically short on gold. When I hit 60 and begin the crafts for the BoA Archon gear, I'm sure I will need more.
So I'm curious about people's opinions; does selling items on the AH for the gold violate the self-found process?
Since this would applicable to both SC and HC, I asked here.
I think selling on AH violates a pure self-found character. Of course you are selling stuff you dropped and crafter by yourself, but selling it on the AH means trading with another player.
When i played HC, i sold stuff on the AH to be able to craft items at lvl 60, but i never bought a single crafting materials.
My opinion is to fuel your gold income to be able to craft for yourself. Diablo 3's gold costs are based on the assumption of gold AH, just look at how expensive are recipes from npcs and craft in general. Farming gold from killing monsters can be frustrating and quite boring....

Yeah that's my worry - I don't really like the idea of farming non-stop for gold. And I've never really been into crating hundreds of items to get something worth selling. I think that I most likely will sell items that I can't use on the AH to get some gold coming in that I can use to craft and advance my Monk.
Well when I play self-found I don't buy from vendors or craft. So basically gold is only used for upgrading self found gems and repairs.
Which found gold is more than enough to pay for these services. But since you do craft I would say using the auction house to increase your craft potential is a bit of a white lie when it comes to self-found. Just do whatever feels right for you even if that means breaking a few rules.
At this point your just making your own fun anyways so do what you want.

Instead i buy stuff from NPCs (without resetting the game each time) because i think they can fill my slots with something that the game generated for my playthrough and they aren't overpowered compared to what you can find or buy from the AH.
But your last sentence is quite true and i totally agree with it.
You asked for opinion on self-found restriction... and in my opinion self-found means to play without the AH, period. I'd rather ask a friend to lent me some gold. Did you find a Goldskin yet? Farming gold on a bit "easier" MP level with Goldskin on and some GF gear actually can be quite fun (for a while, not 24/7 ofc).
However, as some people stated - there are no official rules on self-found and you should do whatever you like and whatever feels good. Just don't ruin it for you (first just use the AH to sell stuff, then only buying mats, then only one gem, then only... ooops, this is not self-found anymore and a couple of hundred hours in you feel like you betrayed yourself).
Yeah that's my worry - I don't really like the idea of farming non-stop for gold. And I've never really been into crating hundreds of items to get something worth selling.
And yet you want to play selffound ? All that does is make the grind longer...
You bring up a good point Bagstone that I hadn't thought about - what becomes a little too much down the road?
My initial thoughts were simply that I wouldn't buy anything from the AH - just sell. That includes buying mats, tomes, etc.
However when I start to think about survivability and the increased likelihood (hardcore) that I will die at later stages, waiting for the perfect craft or drop might become risky. I'm assuming for most Hardcore players find it easy and comfortable to stay at MP1 for a bit until they get lucky?
And yet you want to play selffound ? All that does is make the grind longer...
To clarify - I'm not interested in self-found if the common standard is to only attain gold through monster slaying. I'd rather sell unwanted items on the AH for gold - and THAT be my only interaction with the AH. I'm also not interested in crafting a gazillion one-handers looking for the coveted LS/Socket/CCD - so that I can sell it on the AH to make more gold.
Thus far my interest in self-found is to either find the item or craft it. The monetary means to do so, I'm fine with being supported by AH use.
I was just curious if other folks did felt the same - or if there are "orthodox" self found players that literally only get what they have from monster slaying - especially gold.
I play on HC and I'm not buying anything from the vendors (except some stylish dyes), only relying on luck and craft when available. In my opinion, selling items on the AH to fund crafting ruins the self found experience, and buying items from vendors doesn't help that much either.
Yeah the progression is slow, and RNG plays a big part in how fast you improve your gear, but it's worth it. When a big upgrade drops it's a great feeling. As Bagstone said, making the game easier for yourself in an accessible, cheap way just makes you feel like you betrayed yourself. Like there was some magic to it that just disappears in a single moment. And you'll probably end up quitting that character soon enough.
So, stay strong, stay frosty, and keep clicking.
