After reading that the beta took about an hour to complete and that was 1/3 of the first act, it made me start wondering how long the game was. So I did a couple of simple calculations using 3 hours for act 1 and basing the rest off a continuous depreciation of 20% per act. They stated each act will be shorter then last so I figure 20% is a decent estimate per act. I did it three different ways two are below:
NPV 3 + 3/1.2 + 3/(1.2^2) + 3/(1.2^3) = 9.319
S.L. 3 + 3-(3*.2) + 3-.6 + 3-.6 = 8.4 **This is depreciating at 20% of act 1 per act
So that basically gives us a rough 8 - 10 hour window per difficulty. I assume that NM and hell will probably take a bit longer but not by much since we will already know how to beat the quests. So the total game time should be 24-30 hours. Which makes sense considering most games are about that long. I just did this as some food for thought, also to estimate if I could hit level 60 without sleep the day it comes out.
Glad to finally post something I have been reading this forum for so long without posting. The recent media event made me want to post since we are dealing with hard facts and no longer guesses.
Im not sure how long D2 took in hours but according to blizzard D3 will take a little longer than D2 in terms of content/play time I think. 24 - 30 hours seems reasonalble to me not to mention the countless hours spent playing with skill combos, pvp, MF, ect.
well i dont know a ton about the content in D3 in term of what well have to do, the only hint we got is the beta lenght
so if we have 1/3 of act one and it take a hour, then doing the first act take 3hours. But its fail logic since we dont know what will be in game or how long is the other act. Since im not in a rush when im play diablo, will prolly take me longer since i take the time to enjoy and dont do "GO GO GO!!" like alot of my friends.
So if you take D2, you do all the caves/dungeons you find, do all the quests, get all the way point and explore every room (basically what i do when i dont do boss run) youll probably score higher then someone going straight at the last boss
I think your math fits the spirit of what they're achieving in the fact that each act becomes shorter, but I expect the play time will likely increase with each difficulty. They've stated they're increasing the scale of each difficulty more then d2 had and the 1 hour play time in the beta is the first third of the very first act. The easiest stuff there is.
But it's hard to say.
EDIT:
Ok so i didn't read your post fully, sorry. You pretty much addressed what I had to say.
Remember that we now have a set path through the acts (taking less to walkthrough I expect) but dungeons are still random and there are random mini quests now.
you have to consider that the difficulties will probly be really tough, so it will take alot longer to find the gear to be strong enough to survive and continue on in nightmare and hell

I guess it depends on how thorough you are when it comes to exploring every part of the map, but 25-30 hours sounds about right.
Ooh man, this was absolutely me. I had to explore every inch of an area in Diablo 1 and 2 before I would move on.
He he same here, and this time around it looks like the environments will be much more worthy of exploration
Ditto.
I really like the way they've implemented the random encounters system. It means that we can see wildly different maps for the same area and see different events within those areas.
I can also foresee them using that system to deliver additional content through random encounters occasionally. Well, i'm hopeful of that, at least. From a developers point of view I think it's the perfect platform for it.
Absolutely but can't really fit randomness into the math without getting really complicated and using standard deviation. But really that requires a lot more info I just wanted to guestimate how long. Obviously it will take longer for people who enjoy exploring. I plan on beating the game once as fast as possible kind of skipping a lot of the content and then my second playthrough will be very slow and enjoyable of story.
I think the fact that each time I beat this game I will have a uniquely enjoyable experience. I am excited to be like "WTFmate that wasn't here before"
By the way, I would like to have a mode beyond Hell that would require level 60 through all acts. That way the starting portion of the game can be replayed the same way. I mean, nobody ever went back to ACT I in D2. (I threw this thought in here just because it suddenly occurred to me) - Thread about it yet?
I love that they added a 4th difficulty that will add replay value to the early acts. This will certainly add a lot of playtime to the game... The question I have... is did Blizzard factor in the 4th difficulty into their estimated game play time? if so... each difficulty will actually be shorter(maybe) than the difficulties in D2.
Jay Wilson said around 20 hours to complete normal difficulty, I believe. Let me see if I can find the quote.
Chinese interview translation
Kane's Corner: Under normal circumstances, an ordinary player, after the normal clearance process is about how much the character level? How much time? (Provided by the forum members AvatarSwe)
Jay Wilson: It takes about 20 hours to get through the whole game, when the clearance level of about 30 people.
So, about 20 hours for normal and you get to around level 30.
I hope your right I want a 20 hour normal difficult that essentially will give me 60 hours worth of playtime just to hit 60. However, I am a little skeptical of that quote cause it says whole game, not normal difficulty. When I think of whole game I think norm NM hell not just normal. Plus this new inferno difficulty which will likely be post level 60 content.
You should be able to get to the end of the last act on normal in 4-7 hours tops
this is of course in normal, if your an experienced player, it will probably take longer our first time around.
We are forgetting that just because a third of Act I takes an hour, doesn't mean the difficulty curve won't increase, and thus the time taken to complete everything after that will be an hour for each third of an act.
Though since they said 20 hours, I'm very happy with that. I would assume he's overestimating (so what, every company does it) and an experienced player can get through in 15 hours or less doing everything, but it's still a lot of content, along with 3 (4?) difficulty modes.
