I am starting this thread after starting a conversation in the "more shadow spells thread". I didn't want to clutter up that thread with this one specific idea so I am starting a new one.
So, the topic is the Demon Hunter having some sort of minion/summon. Would you like it? What type? How strong? Right now, the Witch Doctor is the main summoning/pet class. I expect it to remain this way. However, that does not mean that other classes can't dabble in this area. In fact, the Wizard now has a skill called familiar that creates another wizard to fight along side you. I would really like the Demon Hunter to have a similar pet mechanic but there are a lot of options. I have created a poll with popular opinions but feel free to voice your own or ideas on the ones presented.
I personally would like a single demon that I can summon. Since they took away the demon hunter being a demon (which isnt a bad thing) I would still like a more demon feel. I think having this pet would hit the spot. Something like the grizzly of the druid. Or perhaps a choice of either a tanking demon or a damage one.

A demon that is designed just to be her familiar or one that she can take control of from the existing monsters? How strong would it be? Very weak, die often and you keep recasting or something stronger that can hold its own for the most part?

Would you be able to revive (Control would make sense for the name) more than 1 at a time or it increase with level?
@Lichink - I think controlling and dominating over those she hates would seem ok. I definitely would not like some random animal. Which one(s) did you have in mind.
@Magistrate - I think a shadow like the assassin would make the most sense but I really want more demon!!Think of the cool demons that could come up with for her.

I dislike the humanoid summons to be honest. A mindblast type effect is already on the Witch Doctor. It would be nice if she had one enslaved demon pet. Binding the thing to her will and making it crawl seems like the type of thing the character would do.
Might as well save the puppies and birds for future Druid/Ranger classes, right?
I voted other. Since she hates the demons she should have a big p*ssed off dog. Like a cain corso lol. That would be awesom. Or maybe an evil gawking crow bird that flies around and makes sweeping passes at the goons below.
right now this feels like Blizzard took the D2 assassin, The hunter from WoW and the warlock from WoW and put them in one person, I love it. That being said I voted for smaller demons that are disposable but in a numerous group can be harmful and deadly. This makes it fun having fifteen demons on your side. Of course they would be summon-able not converted and I'd like to see these demons apart from enemies and if we were to choose a demon from enemies i think it should be the same demon spawn that the cultists have because it could show that she studied cultist magic.

Not even Death will save you from Diablo Bunny's Cuteness!
Idk but DH could have some kind of skill that he shoots an arrow that make the demon you hit be under your control for a short period. Working like a confusion skill but for a longer time
A ferocious demon hound of ome sort. I imagine it with a big head and big jaw and teeth. His body is kinda small though and he is pretty short. That would be cool. Oh and he should be black.
I don't know what Blizzard has planned, but personally I do not want ANY fire-and-forget tanks like the Valkyrie. A glass cannon wizard clone, cool. Mongrels that get exploded for damage and resummoned, cool. A stationary zombie wall that lasts a few seconds, great. Golems, Valks, Shadow Masters that can tank hundreds of foes leaving you to sit back with impunity and fire away without any consideration for dodging or movement, do not want.
i would like a pet that has life and can tank for the hunter and has you go along your pet levels and gets stronger thru skill points that you can waste and make him tank/dmg kind of thing.. they will have to work on the pet not being 2 op... otherwise pve for hunters will be way 2 easy
a demon that once summoned lies lurking within the demon hunter's shadow lashing out at enemies who manage to get close enough to her
*shrugs* thats my 2 cents
afterthought: then again fan of knives already seems to function really well for taking out guys that get close to you so i dunno, maybe the demon will just shelter itself within her shadow flying out to pick guys off and then quickly retreat back into it
i would like to see something that helps make her traps\bombs more effective. Something that will keep a whole bunch of monsters in one area where a trap\explosive can do massive damage, also good for crowd control. A skill where she can cast some sort of demon circle that forces them to stay inside it for a short period of time, then while they stuck inside throw a nice trap in there or even grenades. Runes with that skill could include extra damage while demons are inside the circle or less defense etc. Dunno if anyone watches supernatural where they always throwing the salt down so demons cant pass through it, only the really strong ones can ofcourse. what you guys think?
oh i know doesnt really fit in with the forum, but my point was she shouldnt need pets with skills like these. she seems like a loner anyways
its quite possible that a demonic shadow would be one of the many options given to you through the use of a skill rune for a more generic "demon summon" skill
Apparently I'm one of the few who doesn't like the idea of an attacking minion for the Demon Hunter. A passive one to attract them would be cool, something like the Amazon's Decoy: that way you can lead them right into a trap. An active one that just runs into enemies would seem more annoying if you want to use traps. Neither would a ranged minion, since that would cause them to shift their attention.
A static shadow that attracts enemies would be the best, in my opinion. With runes it might have a melee or ranged attack, or a fiery aura.
A clever reader would remark that I've only been talking about traps with the Demon Hunter. Thinking about the ranged Bola skill, a moving, melee minion could group them together nicely. A static minion would do the same thing. A ranged one, on the other hand, would only spread them out more, since a pack of enemies would divert their attention to you and the minion. That could work with multishot, I guess.
All in all a moving minion could do more harm than good. You could argue that runes would make the minion fit your style, but then you really need that rune before the skill becomes actually useful. I don't think that's good design. Using a static decoy to attract enemies would work better, since you can actively direct the path you want the enemies to go.
I don't think the minion is supposed to help herd monsters together for you. In my opinion, any ranged class needs a minion primarily to help them get distance form the mobs. whether it is by attracting attention or drawing in monsters. Either way, the minion helps the DH get the much needed room to stay safe while still be able to inflict damage. I think this is especially true for the DH who seems to have even fewer close range skills than the wizard. And if the wizard is getting one, the DH better be as well.
BTW, if the DH is getting some sort of minion of any kind, this will be my ultimate choice for class.

Leaning towards more powerful single demon pet that could aggro enemies.
*shrugs* thats my 2 cents
