I have searched the forum for this topic and found nothing.
So, if you are going to make a game in which the level cap is 99, why not just make the level cap 100, so that you can get that sense of completion.
This truly has bothered me since I first heard of D2. Yes, I know this would be only for aesthetics, but I can't help but feel that 99 just doesn't reflect a character who has reached his full potential.
When I think of 99 all I can think of is, just one more level and the character is finished.
I guess it must be just me who thinks this way.
TL:DR - Why 99 instead of 100. I have no great reasons why, but it makes sense to me.
I never felt that way about it, also it was hard enough to get your character to level 99 in the first place, which is why I rather enjoyed the 50 cap in D1. It was hard but possible to get there.

May have had something to do with the code of the game. The way it was written, it may have been a big ordeal or disaster had they had a 3 digit number for a cap instead of a 2 digit number. Computers are funny that way sometimes.

why did they bring it up to 99 in the first place? there is very little power difference between 85 and 99 considering what it takes. did they ever really expect us to WANT to reach it?
99 seems like the highest they could bring it without any actual extra work. <_<
Desmond Tiny: I completely agree with the idea that it was hard enough to get to level 99 already. (but I guess I wasn't thinking in terms of difficulty, just in terms of principle... the principle that 100 should be the cap to feel a sense of completion)
They should have made those higher levels easier to reach anyways, who wants to level a character forever anyways? (very few people get to 99 it seems)
TL;DR: I agree with what you have to say, I would not have them add a level 100 at this point though with how ridiculous leveling at that point.
Toddzilla 1337: I have considered the coding issue before, and you may be right about it. Computers are weird things that like to bring blue screens of death upon us at seemingly random times.
Lt.Venom: Great explanation. I guess I just wish they gave us some sort of answer on why that is. It isn't a big deal, I guess I am just interested in why.
Your explanation works for me though.
lowl: sounds about right.
P.S: My highest level character is only level 51, and I am already starting to feel some of the tediousness of leveling. It is becoming significantly harder each level. I can't imagine how bad it must be at level 90+...

It wasn't TOO bad before the Secret Cow Level got nerfed in 1.10 (I think it was 1.10). You used to be able to go in there and level up pretty quickly. But Blizzard thought that the end game got ruined because people would just be doing cow level runs to level up instead of actually playing the game.
Well, if you're going to make us grind through the end stage levels, at least make it enjoyable by running around and collecting HOARDS AND HOARDS of cows and then spamming them down with 8 other players. That was fun as hell and actually pretty challenging. They nerfed it, so then the next best way to get XP was the Worldstone Keep level doing the Throne of Destruction.
Either way, you are just grinding to get to max level, so why not have a level where you can just go in there and have TONS of enemies to demolish that drop a decent item every now and then as well? People did not like the Cow Level XP Nerf!
On the contrary, I feel as if 99 is the max. Since in some games max levels or damage is usually "99999" (pronounced "nine nine nine nine nine..." lol)
99 Seems like an apt end, not to mention its the maximum 2digit number. Besides the fact that getting their would be a near impossible feat of grinding...
I'd prefer it be 99, seems bigger to me than 100... o_0 But I'd be fine either way. Heck, who knows? Blizzard might just make the cap 200 or something to throw us off our game
I see where all of you are coming from with this.
99 shows that you have gone threw all of the levels quite clearly. The nines show this, additionally nine is the biggest digit.
I guess I see 100 as a number with three digits (more than 2) and with a sort of close to it. It just seems like a nice and round number to me.
I have to say, it is funny that this reminded you of Monk as I am not a big fan of that show... oh no... I have become what I dislike...nooooo!
Well good discussion guys. I guess D3 will probably never have a level 100 cap, even with expansions, I can't see them making 4 expansions and having all of them with 10 more levels so I can put this topic to rest now.
