I'm not sure if I understood what your problem is, but it is possible that if you have an earlier version of Diablo that it is incompatible with your comp.
I had this problem once, try downloading the most recent patch manually from Bnet, this might do the trick.
Alright:
1.12a is a nocd patch and I don't know if it was a full patch (so with 1.11 and others in it?).
If not, I would suggest that you install older patches first.
It's a full patch. You always have the patches prior to the number tha tshows up.
I really have no idea what's causing this, I've searched around a bit and it seems no one has an answer. The best I could find was to try and upgrade your drivers for your graphics card.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
add me if you want to^^
Europe non ladder and ladder player
I'm gonna put my highrune in your socket
flyarion, flyarion_third, flyarion_fourth, flyarion_fifth
Eject the disc tray and then close it. When the menu pops up press options. Click run video test. Then click skip test. Change your DirectDraw from 3D to 2D. Press OK. This worked for me. Hope it does for you...

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.

If you use XP, then this should be the driver you need to install:

I've been through this with a few games before, that I had to restart the computer or otherwise I would just get a black screen.
