Hey guys I have been a member since just before new years if I am not mistaken, and this happens to be the first topic I have started heh. I just recently decided I would upgrade my laptop over getting a new pc ($$$) or frequenting gaming internet cafes to get my D3 fix. There is a local computer store that sells parts cheap and I will be asking them for advice on parts (though I am skeptical because you never ask a barber if you need a haircut) & instalation.
My laptop is a Acer Aspire One. It works pretty good except that I have three issues with it.
- When I downloaded the open beta it said my video card was not up to date or w.e, and when I tried to play it was so choppy that it was completely unplayable. What is a good graphics card for under $200? Also would I be able to play max graphic settings with this card?
- The modem/router in my home is in my cousins rooms slightly off being above my room. When I am connected the bandwith is quite good, but I often get dropped for a minute or so every so often, and this is fine when Im on espn, youtube, or dfans, but absolutely unacceptable in an online all the time game like D3. What can I buy to ensure I get a good hold of that wireless internet? I would rather buy a specific peice for my laptop than a powerful router.
- I am pretty sure I have some mal ware, spy ware, or minor viruses that make my laptop run at less than 100%. How much should someone pay to have their computer rebooted, and have the microsoft word and google chrome installed which is all I use.
I would not mind paying over $250-$500 for this I would like to walk into the store today or 2moro with some basic knowledge. I would appreciate any help thanks.
First and foremost, do not buy a laptop for gaming unless you are absolutely sure it is built for gaming. Many companies throw in old shitty hardware with support that is obsoleted within 6 months of owning it. I have an i7 Vaio with some beefy specs that I use for business and gaming, but it has an older nVidia card that requires D3 to be at minimal settings to even play it.
Most laptops cannot have their integrated graphics card upgraded unless you change the motherboard. At that point, you might as well buy another laptop, but there are very, very small chances of being able to upgrade it.
It's not your bandwidth I'd be worried about, but I would look at the wireless signal strength when you are connected. You could probably add a wireless hub or a repeater (like a Linksys or D-Link) to help with the signal strength. There are a lot of reasons why a signal drops.
It would be cheaper to buy a software suite that cleans up spyware, anti-virus, firewall, and registries than to pay someone to delete everything when it's not necessary.
Just make sure that you know that a laptop NEEDS to be changed every 2 years to be able to keep gaming current games at reasonable settings. I've been doing it for two laptops back to back now, and I've finally decided to ditch the mobility all together and just start building desktops from scratch again (after about 6 years). It'll save me a ton of money and it'll last a whole lot longer.
The only way you can get a laptop to stand the test of time (3-4 years TOPS) is getting a 17" 2000+ beast... Which will probably be equivalent to 1000$ desktop and won't even be THAT mobile. I'd say invest in a desktop if you plan on gaming... Just my 2cents. I'm moving on from laptops. They had a fair run, but I just don't wanna be blowing money for something that hasn't left my house in over 6 months. Kinda defeats the purpose of spending all that money.
Well I already have the acer I bought it because I don't have a pc. So you think I would be better off buying a pc, I only need it for gaming think I could get a good one for under $1,000?
Your dipping into a very expensive area if your looking for a true gaming laptop. Might as well start fresh and pickup a top end model that will provide you with at least 2-3 years of being able to run just about anything.
Check out http://www.xoticpc.com/ as a good starting point. They carry alot of good models, most notably the Sager line, which provides really great performance. Go with the newest Ivy Bridge 3rd gen cpu's (the 3720qm is super sweet), a high end video card like the 675m gtx, 16gb ram, an ssd boot hd, and 17" screen.
Yeah, your looking at around $2200+ but its an investment that will bring you years of enjoyement and no issues.

Pretty much every laptop sold today comes with a Restore Partition on the Hard drive that allows you to restore to factory settings.
Pressing F8 when it 1st boots up usually allows access on most computers. If not, look it up online.
Upgrading laptops is tricky business.
What is your laptop anyways?
As others have said, unless you actually NEED a gaming laptop for xyz reason, then you are far better off with a desktop PC, and use the laptop for simple business applications or surfing or w/e.
Building your own PC is obviously the cheapest and best route, if you can get the nerve to do it.
Better components.
Better warranties
Cheaper
