I'll never understand why Blizzard maintenance is so screwed up maybe one day, if someone who actually knows what server technology they use explains in really easy to grasp layman terms.
Because I don't get why servers for games like Hearthstone or Starcraft need a weekly 8 hour maintenance.
15 odd years down the track and D3 server reliability is just as good as it was with D2 = sucky!! Game is getting great but man, the disconnects and sudden Battlenet shut downs and queing and lag spikes and general game disruptions is killing this game. Other top name on-line games don't have half this trouble, either fix the server problem or hire people who know how to.

Best guess? One of the main points of B.net 2.0 is a unified backend (hence we are now able to chat and interact with people in different blizzard games). Makes it more convenient and logically from an administrative point of view, but it does become a single point of failure.
As for the technology? They probably had to roll their own, since to my knowledge, no other game company has anything approaching the complexity of the stuff Blizzard has. Maybe League of Legends, but they only have 1 game, that is only 4-5 years old, whereas Blizzard has 5 different games spanning over a decade. Everyone else has either less games or lower population them Blizzard does. They probably use common stuff but had to customize it extensively.

I am actually surprised that they have not rolled out a platform management solution (like Chef, Ansible, etc.) and migrated to a CICD model.
First time I've been able to play in a couple of weeks. Wife and kid out of the house...
Try to log on BNet... put in queue (WTF?) for a few minutes.
Login to Diablo... put in queue for 7 minutes.
"Unable to Authenticate".
Start Grim Dawn. Works.
Thanks Blizz for your shitt online always policy. God forbid I'm not connected to your servers when playing my single player game.
Looks like time to get that console version, lol.
Yeah, that's a clear solution. Not sure why people whom espouse hatred for being "forced" to play the always online version when there's an offline version available for sale.

You're right; I'll just go ahead and buy a PS3, spend *another* $60 to play an outdated version of a game I already own, just to play offline. What a "clear" and practical solution, thank you.
Everything seems to be fixed but it's still pretty funny that they had an 8 hour maintenance just to have server issues again.
BF4 | D3 | WoW
