What are your guys' thoughts on the naming system being like Starcraft 2's? (ie you can make as many of the same name as you want and it'll have a hidden number attached to it). I know there was a post by Bashiok that they are still looking into the best possible direction... and I wasn't going to make this thread until I saw 2 things today:
1. http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/3196019654
Regarding the AH: "I have 8 characters named SpinDrJr. This makes it easy for people to identify me when I join their game, but it does not make it easy for me to choose which character to browse for gear on. It would be great if we had some indication on the class of character in that list."
This isn't feedback about the AH (though those 2 examples are related to it). I am discussing the game as a whole. From what I see here, people are just choosing the same name for their heroes (freak chance? or common?... I wonder?)
In Diablo 2 you had your Bnet account and your character names which were BOTH individually unique to your region. I think the community as a whole would not go back to that (based on the long thread on the blizz forums... and the fact that your 'wanted' name will be gone in 1 hour of release).
However, I don't really know what to think of the current system. In SC2 you just had your RealID and then account name. Here we have RealID and then 5+ character names which can all be the same...
While I agree that the lack of unique names does come with it own set of problems. The problem that first comes to mind is naming characters the same as Internet celebrities or the like but, with out a persistent world the most you can do is try and fool three people at a time. An easy solution IMO is to have all global posts use your RealID or account name and your character name being more or less flavor text. a filter like that of the stash system seems an easy way around AH searches. I do like the idea of not having unique char names it's hard enough coming up with a decent name in WOW and thats only competing with the few thousand people on a server, I cant imagine the gibberish you'd have to come up with if you were competing with half of north America for a name.
The only annoying part with no unique names would be when writing on Forum with the Diablo account or when you group up with someone that is named the same. That would make your name worse than it is.
This is also a concern of mine. Having a unique name is how you can stand out in the community. What if 300 people make the name Sixen and 299 of them are complete asshats in every game they join? This makes our beloved Sixen look like an ass by indirect association.
It also makes it harder to give popular builds proper credit. If there was a witch doctor named ChaotiK who was dominating the PvP scene.. searching for "chaotik's diablo 3 pvp build" might bring up a bunch of fakers =)
I've generally been able to avoid any problems with unique character names as I seem to have a nack for picking shit names that no one else wants. my first barb in d2 was called toiletfumeliker and my first 3 WOW character were called pyrate, pyratetwo and pyratethree (I'm creative like that).

Well if we were all like you then there wouldn't be a problem
Yep, but it's better than the alternative... and that's having even the name ch@0t1c taken within 5 minutes by someone else
Not at all.. Diablo 2 didn't allow the use of @ or 0. They should keep it unique Alpha only. Once you choose a name "Axeslayer" just as an example, no one else should be able to use it.

I like the idea of no unique names but it certainly needs some work for identifying characters in stash and AH. Even just listing the character class would help heaps!

Come back here and tell me how many tries it took you. Then tell me if you REALLY want that to be diablo 3.
My bets on 53,000 people named Legolas. That is what this thread is about, right?
Yeah, in ideal world names should be unique. But Blizzard for last years trying to please as more people as possible, and sadly most of them cannot be any smart to come up with original and still appropriate name. For the same reason we won't have unique build-system, but u'll be able to respec anytime. Those good times when games/books/music were created from good ideas are gone, now companies analyse the market, and make mainstream products. Thats good for ignorant people, but pretty sad for others..
Bidmal... unique names are a BAD idea in this case. With the number of people who are likely to be playing this game, and the number of characters... not to mention the opportunity for trolling.
Say I'm well known for using the name 'Seluhir'. If someone wants to piss me off, they can just log in first minute, create a character named Seluhir, and never play it. Now my name is used, I can't get it. You can't say it's not unique, I've NEVER seen anyone other than me use it, but on several wow servers there are level 1-5 characters with that name that have prettymuch never been played.
Why? Because back in WoW classic I was fairly well known for an odd-ball build I made. So people decided to reserve my name so I couldn't use it if I came to their server.
Unique names are fun, but they just lead to a lot of problems when you're dealing with a nationwide community.
Non-unique names are really the only solution to all of these problems, and I'm truly grateful that Blizzard sees that.
And yes, that is despite the fact that 9 out of 10 of the names I come up with are completely unique things that nobody else uses...
I believe that your account name will be visible to players looking to join your game / in your game, so that your identity can remain constant without needing to name all your characters the same. Plus the banners, yo.
Unique names have great benefits, but the fact is the community is much larger then the number of good names. A friends list exists so you can find players you liked again.

Around 10s in, he chooses his character and you see 5 of the same names.
