The first act is a little bit more of a mystery, there's this cult that has been operating in and around the rebuilt Tristram, you're trying to find out who they are. Act two's a little bit more of an intrigue and deception-focused story, because Belial is in there. Act three, there's a lot more.
So could Belial, like some have guessed, been posing as Tyrael to destroy the Worldstone?
Also a 5th class tidbit:
Quote from "IGN Article" »
IGN: Have you confirmed how many unrevealed classes there are, to round out the entire party?
Jay Wilson: There's one more.
IGN: You did mention that it's being revealed next year, and that it's someone from the previous games?
Jay Wilson: I did say that. I probably shouldn't have said that, because we're not sure that's going to be the case. It's just logical, that's what we tend to do. But it may or may not. I'm not gonna answer it, anyway? [laughs]
The second biggest reveal is Jay saying Diablo is the main genoosh.
IGN: For people that don't have a sense of the story of the entire Diablo franchise, can you give us a quick summary of what D3 is all about?
Jay Wilson: Yeah. Diablo 3 is an action role-playing game where you play the role of one of five heroes trying to save the world of humanity, we call it Sanctuary, from hideous demon invaders and ultimately Diablo.
So, we're finally going to find out what Belial looks like. I wonder what he's doing outside of hell.
And Diablo's officially in the game now too? Hehe, I wonder what crazy plot device Blizzard thought up to do that. But it wouldn't be a Diablo game without him so I'm glad he's going to be present.
Nice find. It's good to know they are going so deep into the lore.
And I'm pretty sure Diablo will be in the game. Considering the statues you can buy are described as a barbarians standing atop the conquered skull of Diablo. And any one can put it together that the skull is the same skull of the monster we saw in the original trailer.

I remember reading in one of the chats (maybe Heroes/Monsters) one of the questions was "how the hell is diablo still alive" and I think that Jay or someone said "we never said Diablo was still alive". Crap I can't find it, maybe someone else remembers.
I interpreted that bit of the article a bit differently, in that it is a general synopsis of all the games, not specifically that Diablo is the end boss. But you never know. He gotta be there somewhere right?
This had already been brought up for discussion on other threads. Please use the Search feature.
If you look at the OP you can see I didn't find it anywhere. You could've included a link or something, rather than generic condescension. Thanks for moderating though!
Really? Because searching for 'Belial' brings up half a dozen threads. Either you're lying about searching or...well, the second option is rather insulting so I'll leave it at that.

If you search for "IGN Article Belial" the last thread is from September.
Oh... I get it. It's because you mention the article last night in a thread called "We have only seen the first act". Congratulations, you mentioned it before I did. That thread title is not specifically about the article or the lore, is it? nor is it meant to instigate discussion on the subject on a Diablo 3 discussion forum. So either get to moderating and merge the threads or leave the policing to the actual moderators.
And I really don't think it's a stretch that Diablo will be returning. I mean, it's kind of obvious he'd be in the game, after all. Tyrael said the consequences of destroying the world stone would be unknown, and I think it's fair to assume Diablo's survival is one of those consequences.

My art blog
My typical train of thought: Everything -> Sex -> Diablo
He meant a returning class in the game itself -- and NPC, as others have said -- they've been adamant that the Barbarian is the only -returning- class.
If nothing else we're likely to see the Necromancer Zayle from the Diablo novels as an NPC...they've hinted a few places at this and it'd make a lot of sense.
The soulstones were created to imprison the prime evils in sanctuary right? And to unleash their power the prime evils needed a medium to act as their body. Those two things are certain. But that may only be true in sanctuary. I mean, Diablo should not need a soulstone to exist in Hell, because he's existed there far before being imprisoned. So I believe that without a soulstone, the prime evils can't manifest in Sanctuary, but be as powerful (if not even stronger) in Hell. What I mean is, they might not die until they're killed in Hell, where their original forms reside. So basically, the plot might end with the Heroes actually travelling to Hell to kill Diablo in his home ground, thus exterminating him for good (I don't count the River of flame as the actual Hell).
In the D2 cinematics, didn't the hero destroy Diablo's soulstone on the hellforge? We know mephisto's was destroyed, and I think Diablo's was as well. Unless they reverse the lore, D and M can't make a comeback, as shattering a soulstone on the hellforge was supposed to destory the essence contained within.
Also, they don't need soulstones to exist in sanctuary, three soulstones were given to the Horadrim by Tyreal to imprison the prime evils because they were in the mortal plane. While there, the demons possessed mortals to suit their ends, but they could also influence thoughts and emotions without a physical form(Think of Diablo corrupting Lazarus while still in the Stone) . The Horadrim had to chase down and kill the the mortals to release the "essence" of the demons so that they could trap them in the soulstones, as they were immune to it while possessing a soul.
ATM I can't remember what happened to Baal's stone at the end of LoD, and I don't have time to go watch the cines right now. But I don't think Meph or Diablo can come back without something somewhere saying "Oh shit, when we destroyed the soulstones it really just sets them free", which would make sense if Belial was masquerading as Tyreal.
He meant a returning class in the game itself -- and NPC, as others have said -- they've been adamant that the Barbarian is the only -returning- class.
Read the quote again. That's not how the question was phrased at all. They were clearly discussing the unannounced playable class, not a NPC in the game.
What we're trying to say is that the 5th class in D3 might be one of the NPCs in Diablo 1 or 2. In that way, it's not a returning class, only a returning character.
Being that the soulstones are just containers i dont understand why breaking them in the hell forge would destroy their essence. Also the fact that the Prime Evils still had the power to corrupt others and to gain influence shows how ineffective the soulstones really were since Izual had told the Prime Evils how to corrupt them. Diablo and Baal were able to return to their physical forms even while they were supposedly trapped within the soulstones, and im not sure if it was the same case with Mephisto or it was just that he took over the body of the Que-Hegan of the church of the Zakarum and what we saw was the corruption of his body seeing that it was so human like.
So just from those facts i think that the soulstones never really worked or did very little. If anything from the cinematic it appeared that Baal used his soulstone shard to increase his power.
On the other hand, i just had this thought while writting this. Being that Diablo had the same appearance in Diablo 1 and 2 in which both cases he still had his own soulstone and now that he does not his appearance has changed It could be that the forms that we saw (in all Prime Evils) while they had their soulstones are not trully their original forms and its just a manifestation of their essense within a host. So as i said before A shard of mephistos soulstone was put into the palms of the Council in Travincal, the biggest piece in the Que-Hegan. Diablost soulstone was in the wanderer and Baals stone was stuck within Tal-Rasha. So this makes me beleive we only killed the bodies of the hosts with just some sort of temporary physical manifestation created by the spiritual essense of the prime evils.

Two? He's obviously not referring to the three Prime Evils, and he's already confirmed Belial. Azmodan, anyone?
And this quote...
Someone from the previous games? Do we play as Kashya or something?
