Interesting. At the Fan Site Q&A (Blizzcon 08) I asked Wilson about the Icon there and if he could talk about it. He said it was a Talisman screen that is on it's way out. He said it was an attacking mechanic that didn't really work the way that they had intended so they took it out, but haddn't removed the icon before Blizzcon.
Since it is still in there even after a UI update, I am thinking that they had a change of heart since then. Just like the skill tree mechanic.
Did you play the Immortal Throne expansion? I don't think it was in Vanilla TQ.
They could also be notoriously hard to get unless you knew how to get them, and the recipies for them were pretty rare (although I could swear that at least one of the same kind dropped in 'Act 1' every single playthrough).
Basicly, you collected 3 different items (and a recipe), combined them at a special vendor at a hefty price, and woosh, you got a nifty item that could have all kinds of more or less awesome effects.
I see. But how did the Talisman play into it? If it was just the items and recipe combined at a vendor, there seems to be no use for it. Or is the talisman the recipe?

The old screenshot is definately discarded by now, UI-wise. It just wouldn't fit the new 'style'. The uncanny resemblance between the original talisman image (the 'old screenshot') and the 'talisman-button' is hard to shake, though. Obviously we can't know for sure until we actually get a -new- screencap of a new talisman page (if any), but I feel that it's reasonable to assume that the Talisman is in.
Otherwise, why have a button with the talisman on it? I don't think it's a button to open a soup kitchen.
oh, the talisman is defnitly in, i was just trying to say i belive its most likely to be a runeword replacement than a crafting system
Definately. Anything like that would be great, so you don't end up feeling compelled to fill your entire inventory with good charms. I'm not sure it's what the talisman is, but it would definately make sense to have something like that.
Kinda makes you choose also which ones you wanna replace as you get new ones.
I also really like the charm container idea. It's just crazy how many charms people kept piled in their inventory. I'm not saying I didn't as well, but it's kinda like a "save me from myself" situation
There were plenty of times I got fed up with only being able to pick up 1 or 2 things before I got full, but everytime I was tempted to take a few out, all I could think of was how much weaker I would be than everyone else, and kept them in...

I'm personally betting it has something to do with charms as well - it may be a method of fixing the overpowered effects charms had in D2. Isn't it true that we haven't seen any charms drop in the gameplay vids/screenshots yet?
I kind of imagine you may get a few slots for placing really powerful charms, then a few slots for decending grades of charms.
It could also be that charms vary in power depending on their position in the talisman, or that the effect they have changes depending on which charms are placed next to them.
As far as I know, we haven't seen any screenshots of socketed items, have we? Or screens of the gems in anything. So what if the chipped star topazes and all them go in the talisman, and it gives you charm-like bonuses that way?
It makes sense. They got rid of runewords, and I haven't seen any jewels yet, so what else would there to put in socketed items, other than gems? And unless they change the effects of the gems, they aren't going to do much good in items. So maybe there won't be any socketed items at all, which would leave the gems to go in the talisman...
The holes in the talisman do kinda match up with the size/shape of the gems.
Thoughts?

You can do that in Diablo II, it's nto particularly new. I hope that wouldn't be all it would do.
This way you cant just load your inventory down with charms, you only get 9.
Kinda makes you choose also which ones you wanna replace as you get new ones.

3x 15% Poison Damage = 45% Poison Damage or whatever..
Charms were already grossly overpowered, I can't imagine what kinda charms there would have been if that were allowed lol.
