EDIT: Look forget about it, I think I have a better idea which I just took from FF X-2
What about sometimes in Hell difficulty there's a random and rare event where a monster (including bosses) would become all of sudden super powerful and would also have better drops (not as rare or good as uber Diablo though, except maybe if it's an act boss).
Graphically it would look like the Devil Trigger from Devil May Cry 4 (still looking for a good screenshot). It would look like some sort of dark/purple cloud like aura is emanating from the monster and it could also add them spooky glowing red eyes (if they even have any lol)
I'm still trying to find a name that would fit Diablo for this mechanic, maybe Dark Trance or something idk, it's an idea directly taken from the Devil May Cry series.
The main aim of this mechanic is to make Hell even more challengeful than it was in the previous games
Okay, let's say that at the base most enemies in Hell are simply quite stronger than on Nm and some with more resist to elements. Basically what the Devil Trigger does is that if you take too much time to kill enemies it will buff them up making them A LOT thougher to kill (more def, hp, res, immune to stun, knockback, horrify, etc.), more intelligent and insanely strong. Also the lower on health they are the faster they trigger.
Oh and killing enemies on the screen too fast would cause them to trigger as well (wouldn't want to get the rich gets richer dilemma would you?)
And on a final note bosses can trigger as well and will trigger automatically when low on health.

So if I have problems killing a boss but I push through it slowly but surely, he'll get harder and harder?
I don't like this idea.
I do like however that bosses would change as their hp dropped. I'm thinking along the lines of a melee boss who would berserk at say 20% and do more damage/movement speed and have less defense.

That would eliminate build variations. Someone may want to build a character that kills slowly but is very effective at controlling monsters and staying alive. From what I can tell everyone would have to build the fastest killing character they can because killing fast=no trigger=survivability. Fast killing and survivability should be somewhat independent.
i don't think this would work in an RPG type game because the devil may cry dude doesnt get like .. better armor or stronger items so he should be killing monsters at a certain speed.
He has the capability of killing them at a certain speed in an RPG it takes gear and skill into account.

I knew when I posted this thread that it would cause some problems, but just imagining monsters in D3 with the dark aura is so freakingly sweet (too bad I couldn't find any pic).
Maybe it should just be like OverSoul in FF X-2, let's say it's just a rare random event and it also gives the dted monsters better loot.

I have to agree here. I just don't think it would fit into a Diablo game very well. I think it would probably just get irritating for a player who is already struggling.

That would be kinda cool, although the boost in difficulty would have to be limited to non-quest kills I think. So doing boss runs could have it but not the first time you fight the boss(just a thought).
As Broaw pointed out, when DT happens in DMC it's because the player isn't performing very well, and since DMC is quite skill-dependant, it's mostly a matter of learning the game better or collecting a little Proud Souls/Red Orbs to upgrade your character and try again.
Diablo is gear dependant however, and so an exact replica isn't be best I think.
However I can definately see something of this working in special areas that aren't quest related, or teamrelated challenges if any such things exist.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.

Isn't that like... a unique monster? Better loot and a glowing aura that has some effect?
Plus I think uniques were taken out of the game and were replaced with mini bosses like the Thousand Pounders.
