I sense the sarcasm. Cartoon graphics are not defined by shoulder pad to nipple contact. Cel-shading is the epitome of cartoon graphics in games. Diablo 3 is on the realistic side of the spectrum. The characters are realistically proportioned, no bold black outlines, physical details such as veins, wrinkles, etc.

how do you want me to call this style of blocky and oversized geometry?

Well you certainly don't want to lose those nipples, now do you?

i got to say i agree to all of his comments. especially the last one. I think they're making one hell of a game in California... if they manage to make it balanced and the storyline is good enough we'll have something to do for the next decade.
edit
please stop talking about WoW. Diablo 3 has taken far less from WoW than WoW from Diablo. Hell, even the classes (even the ones about to come) have spells taken from Diablo 2.
Like the brand new Death Knight has Corpse Explosion and Bone Armor.
Diablo 3 looks slightly more cartoony than Diablo II but thats all it is. Whine as much as you want about the UI. Its much better than in Diablo 2 and is easier to use more skills with it. I dont want to spam F-keys anymore. I'd rather use the normal number keys to instantly use the abilities.
And i just about disagree with all of his comments. Just because WoW has taken more from Diablo, doesnt make me happy that D3 is taking from WoW period (whether minor or major, pretty damn major in my opinion).
vivd colors and over saturation are a big part of cartoons, as well as (generally) a lack of shadow/darkness, you guys are conveniently leaving out.
D3 is not NEAR as saturated and colorful as WoW, and it has shadows.
Art style is their own choice, I don't care anymore all this whining is just getting out of hand, especially when it's going no where. Write a 5 page letter to Blizzard about everything, or a huge email. Why must we all argue on the forums about it? It's not going to do ANYTHING.
Blizzard does not care if people don't like the idea D3 is taking things from WoW. Does that make them horrible people? No. It makes them smart marketers.
They're trying to build the biggest fanbase as possible without stepping on too many toes and people still complain. There are going to be people who don't like Diablo anymore. That's their own choice.
A little extra color and oversized shoulder pads is not going to cause me not to play.
If it causes you not to play. I'm sorry, best wishes in finding a franchise in the future.
Blizzard has already said they're not changing anything major with the art, so why are we all still at eachothers throats?
Thank you for not taking offense and posting some huge wall of text flaming and arguing with me.
It's not exactly what I wanted either but I still think it's going to be a good game so far.
I guess what I'm trying to say to everyone is if you don't like the way the game looks you don't need to compare it to WoW or make excuses/long posts about it or anything else. Just flat out say I don't like the way it looks.
I'll admit, I do NOT like the green lighting. Nothing we say here is going to change that fact though. A petition of 50,000 people was considered "squeaky wheel syndrome". This forum only has 30,000 total members, a LOT of them not even active. We could all get together and say we don't like it and it'd probably still have the same effect.

Blizzard's quality has been on the decline since six months after WoW's launch when some weird decisions were made that ended PvP altogether. But at the same time, it's Diablo. If you mess that up, you shouldn't be making games.

Yeah Diablo is almost guaranteed to succeed. If it does fail then I will truly lose all faith in the gaming industry.

Lawl. That's pretty much the same exact thing I was saying like 2 pages ago. I don't think it'll ever end, comrade!!! It's... a catastrophe.
People are going to feel pretty funny if this ends up being the best game ever conceived by mankind.

People keep crying about the same subjects, making numerous threads on the same subjects, and laugh about it all and then we all look some where but you know what, it's because if people didn't keep on crying about the same things, these forums would come to a stand still with nothing to make a thread or post about, at some point it would all dry up until more news released.

There's no way diablo will fail in terms of sales. I'd give it a 30-40% chance of succeeding in terms of all elements of play remaining true to the diablo universe (besides the artwork, which is clearly not). It doesn't matter though, because Blizzard's new target is the WoW type gamer, and remaining true the franchise is secondary to profit. Smart business model, huge failure to the fans that loved this company from the beginning.

I'm predicting sure if it's anywhere near as good as it's predecessors in quality and ingenuity, it's consumer base will probably outnumber the number of WoW players within the first year, if not sooner. And if it's even better than the first 2, then I'm thinking it'll cover the warcraft franchise in it's dust as soon as the sales reach it's peak.
Sure it may be targeting WoW players somewhat, but if it's as good as it sounds, It won't really matter.
I had forgot how the armor in the gameplay looked different than the one on the site.
Everything looks pretty much the same though except the shoulders. Not that I have a problem with the way the armor looks anyway though.
It could stand to be slightly smaller besides that I think it looks fine.
Anyway I think those are two different shoulder items obviously. And the less detailed one from the site is probably the lower level item and isn't shiny because I think they were going for the leather look. It looks like hard leather with sharpened bone/teeth spikes from animals or demons.
Oh and didn't someone edit that picture by turning up the brightness like 1000x? I remember someone posted that image a long while ago and turned up the brightness to ''prove a point,'' which was moot. Here is a link to the Diablo 3 website where you can see it uneditted.
edit: oh, that was you! lulz.
am i sure of what? (forgot they were so much bigger in the gameplay vid haha just look ridiculous)
unless what ive read are lies we will not see any shiny steel armors or so, everything will be soft and dull..
nothing looks like steel as hard steel is shiny, reflective or glossy..
Quote from "synthaza" »
Looks shiny enough to me. Plus when you think Barbarian, do you really think knights in shining armour? I think Blizzard is trying to capture the essense of the wild and unruly character.
(they are also hard shiny steel looking, not soft dull handpainted fudge like everything will be in d3)
I just hope that other armor sets look better than that, it looks a little to (insert text). I want to see an armor set that shines black with scaled armor with a powerful looking helm paired with it. Maybe a more slim character that is not half naked. In fact, now that I think about it, that would be a good feature if Blizzard allowed players to set the Height, Weight, and Bone structure of the character but to a certain limit for that particular class so it doesn't bleed in with the body structures of other classes. Then again maybe they will have a slimmer Melee class such as a Knight or Paladin which I wouldn't mind.

Realistically proportioned, you say?

just leave them to body armor
or maybe blizzard needs to study some anatomy

Pretty much. I'd give it a little higher odds of staying true to elements of gameplay though.
Remember they aren't JUST trying to target WoW players but they do want to draw a lot in.

Yeah until you wear it into battle once. Then it becomes covered in dust and scratched.
Besides I don't think he's wearing shiny polished steel. More like hard leather, fur, iron, possibly some bronze and copper.
